THE WINTER MEN is the project John Paul Leon was most proud of. None of its gorgeous artwork has ever been sold or left his Miami studio, except to be scanned for this book. Now, as a tribute to the renowned artist, JP’s closest friends have united to publish an Artist's Edition of this modern comics masterpiece, with all proceeds proudly going to JP’s wife and daughter.
Please pledge your support and join JP's studio-mates and Project Organizers Tommy Lee Edwards & Bernard Chang, Book Editor & Project Initiator Scott Dunbier, and artists Bill Sienkiewicz, Lee Weeks, Duncan Fegredo, Sean Phillips, Kim Jung Gi, Denys Cowan, Walter Simonson and Joe Quesada (who are all contributing brand new art prints) in celebration of an astonishing and inspiring body of work. John Paul Leon’s THE WINTER MEN Artist’s Edition features 184 pages of full-size 12 x 17 scans of all of the original comic art pages, along with never-before-seen concepts, layouts, sketches, unused art and pin-ups.
"One of the greatest artists of our generation, he was also one of the nicest and most talented creators one could be lucky enough to have met. So young and still creating the very best work of his career. I remain in awe of both his unrivaled draftsmanship and his stellar designwork - both of which were simply unparalleled & technically just so precise & perfect. But what really made me a fan was how he squeezed in every bit of emotion & life in every image he created."
- JIM LEE
*Grateful acknowledgment to IDW Publishing for allowing us to use the term Artist's Edition for this book

Other than of course being aware of John's artwork as a comic book fan for years, my only other memory of him was being at Bernard's table at a convention somewhere and showing him my artwork and him tearing me up down and sideways as to how my work was not there. And at some point he pointed over it John's table and said this guy is going to be your competition you have to think about that. I say none of this in order to give the impression that I have any negativity towards any of the parties I just mentioned just that I'll never forget that memory as it's always stood out to me. And John is amazing and I love his artwork

I CANNOT WAIT for this book. JPL was and is a powerful artist. an artist edition of his combined with the fact that the proceeds go to JPLs family makes this a no-brainer for me

I met John when he was still in school, and when he showed me his portfolio, I just handed it back and said there was nothing I could say that could possibly improve his work. Gave him my business card (was at DC at the time) and just said "call me when you graduate." He did. His run on Challengers was one of the most beautiful things I've ever had the luck of supporting in decades working with artists. He grew not just from page to page, but frame to frame. He would drop pages off every week, we would talk about it, and some days take the F Train back to Brooklyn together. He was the total artist, no ego at all, utterly focused on the work and improving. One day I saw him hunched over a shelf next to the office copy machine. He was doing finishes over a copy of his pencils with a broken twig dipped in ink. I asked why. "Toth said if you can ink it with a broken stick, it's good enough." I literally almost fell over when an artist here in Australia told me of his passing. I was in a studio of artists who work in VFX and Games, and they knew his work, remembered my story of meeting John and first seeing what he could do on a page. That's the impact of his work. The artists artist, globally.
