That is my photo of Recon Team (RT) Montana at 1:04. I took it in the middle of March 1971. Often mistakenly attributed to MSG Billy Greenwall, I took that and one more just like it in front of the flagpoles at SOG's base named CCC (FOB II), located about 1 "klick" south of the Dak Bla river, which was the southern border of Kontum proper... I was the XO of Recon Company and was training in March 1971 to go out on a recon mission with RT Montana as a "straphanger," or extra US... We were inserted NW of Dak To, right on the Laotian border... Our mission was to locate a sapper battalion... On the seventh evening of the mission their LZ/trailwatchers found us first, and the next morning they tried to ambush us... We were extracted under fire off of the top of a grassy ridge line that fell down into a north/south valley where the smoke of two dozen or so breakfast fires floated upward... That valley was the base camp of the sapper battalion we were looking for... I was on the last Huey to leave that ridge line... As the Huey lifted up and forward, and then pivoted right and fell down the little canyon between our ridge line and the next, jungle-covered one, the Cobras came uphill, firing into the adjacent jungle-covered ridge line, with mini-gun rounds snapping right past our left doorway, where I was sitting... Red tracers going down, and green ones coming up at the Cobras... That was exciting... Almost too much...! Many thanks to the Huey and Cobra crews... Thanks for coming back for us...! Dai-uy Matt Beyeler...

Hey Matt, hope all is well and wish you a belated Happy New Year. Do you keep in touch with the gentlemen from any of the recon or spike teams? If you haven't already online, there is a site or two that I would like to forward you to that a few of the gents from those teams are members of and have shown a world of generosity by sharing some of their experiences and stories. Heck, you might be a member and I don't know it! If this reaches you and you have any interest in it, PM/email me through my account on here.

Arnet was one of several anti American reporters during the war, announcing the US Embassy had been taken and the VC were inside the embassy when they never got inside. But he was 1st to report and made national headlines with his story. The Tiger report over the US using chemical weapons by the Special Forces was proven false and he was fired after apologizing to an Iraqi general for the US invasion.
@deenpoots66639 жыл бұрын
***** they made it inside. the officers themselves are trying to justify using the nerve agents..that means they are in favor of using them and most likely used them.
@gerry12529 жыл бұрын
Deen Poots They made in to the grounds outside the Embassy. The Embassy compound, they never entered the Embassy itself. Arnet reported they were inside the Embassy. Made headlines the next day in the US. Testimony and an investigation into the accusations showed no illegal chemical weapons used. Not that some officers were in favor of using them, therefore they probably used them. Would like to know where they would even have access to nerve agents in Vietnam.
@deenpoots66639 жыл бұрын
***** ill give you the embassy. only because im finding conflicting stories...the chemical weapons on the other hand. is a huge red flag. they would sweep this under the rug big time. you say investigation, i say "investigation." they have access to nerve agents where ever they want to have access to nerve agents.
@gerry12529 жыл бұрын
Deen Poots Whatever you want to believe. I tend to believe the investigation and not Peter Arnet. I think he was fired for that reason as well. Whatever.

I really want the Seals to go back to the very secretive organization they use to be no information released to the press otherwise you you could face a captain's Mast and very disciplined no blanket party's in the middle of the night that lead to a prrson's death no drinking while you are in combat zone but the main thing course is discipline

There is no " law " in combat, save for not killing non combatants. The reason the U.S. sent recon teams into Laos and Cambodia is that the NVA and some VC units were travelling through those countries and using them as staging areas, in violation of some " law ".

@@SteveCaldwellUSNNam That's what I've been saying before. The real Spec Ops guys in Vietnam were on whoooole another level than the new SEAL Hollywood guys who can call a Spectre every time they feel like "losing" a battle... And Lauri Törni (from Finland where I'm from) was one the first guys in Laos with MACVSOG... Also, LRRP (which was one of the first special op teams in US Army?) is quite literally (Kaukopartio) the exact term for the (what would nowadays be called special forces) guys in Finland during WW2 (like Lauri).
