That really is what it would take, folding space somehow, without folding everything that travels through said space (which is a trick since we're part of space too). I think that, while we don't know a fraction of what we think we know, which already isn't much, we do have a pretty decent grip of the storage of energy within matter (which is why he was saying fire is so important, the primary form of converting matter into energy).
