John is a great reefing friend of mine and I am so excited to be able to showcase his absolutely amazing mixed reef with you all.
Starting life out as a fish only system that got converted in to a reef, there are a heap of amazing stories about the tank and the inhabitants that you could listen to all day.
I've done my best to concatenate this down into a 30min video, but if you have any further questions for John or myself - be sure to fire them down in the comments section below.

Awesome 👏 mixed reef tank talk from John in this video, I love hearing about other reefers talk on how their tanks have evolved over time, what they do to maintain it’s beauty, just full of great 👍 info. Something I hope you will find interesting Sam, 🤔I watched a video from Reefs, titled Learning about Aquarium Lighting with Tullio of Reef Brite. I’m sure you will know a lot of what’s being said, but for instance he talks about in one segment what par measures and what it doesn’t, if you find it’s got substance, you could maybe share. 👍 Cheers buddy. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Beautiful reef! I love that the tank itself is tall. Anything taller then 24" makes it look so much bigger than it is. I know the trend is shallower but I love taller even if it's harder. The stand being tall too probably helps make it look larger in real life as well.

Very beautiful mixed reef tank! Gongrats! I am upgrading to a tank exactly the same dimensions just 2" shorter, i already have 3 hydras 52 from my previous tank, i think i will need some more light. Do you think a refugium it's a good idea or going with a sulfur reactor it's actually a "cleaner" solution?
@ParkersReef
@ParkersReef 3 жыл бұрын
Sulphur will target nitrate only, it’s very tuneable too and pretty well set and forget. That being said, a fuge is a much more natural approach and has lots of other benefits too (ph, absorbs more organics and is a great hole for pods)

Hi Ron, the truth is Ive been very lucky in having my son live with us. Our holidays have never clashed over the past 5 years so there has always been someone home. Hi Ryan, Sam's right there is no chiller. We do have a couple of fans we mount on the sump in summer but living in Melbourne we have more issues with temperature swings than we do with long hot spells. Even on really hot 40 degree days our tank has never gotten over 26.5 degrees.

Hey Wally N, John here, I assume you mean the silicone joins in the corners of the tank. We don't really do anything special but we are very careful not to push our glass cleaner into the silicone because you only need to lift it a tiny bit and algae will grow under there. If I've misunderstood the question just let me know. Oh, and one other tip, we never leave the glass cleaner in the tank once finished cleaning. If you do you not only risk metal leakage from the magnet but the pressure of the magnet bends the metal cleaning blade and makes them less effective

Sam , Johns reef amazing , my tank is a bit similar but not near johns , i noticed that when John started to explain his system down below and his levels he didn't mention PH , i am assuming by his coral growth and dosing system that he is not having a problem with it . But he says he may switch to a Calcium reactor , because of the amount of two part he is using . Well i took that step and changed over , my system is 150 gal mix reef also { 5 ft tank } . Its a lot less hassle than two part , but its not that easy , you still have two teak it every now and then to maintain bubble and drip rate. , the only negative i am experiencing is a suppressed PH because of the excess CO2 . i am currently trying a CO2 scrubber but doesn't seem to be helping much , If you are familiar with the problem can you recommend what the pros like John might use ?
@ParkersReef
@ParkersReef 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Matt! Firstly, to make calcium reactors dead simple - I highly recommend carbon doser regulators. They are so consistent and easy to dial in, it makes the whole calcium reactor thing a non-event (in my opinion anyway!). As for keeping PH up in a calcium reactor system, there are two things I'd recommend (well, 2.5). First is a second degas chamber for your calcium reactor. This is essentially just another chamber that the effluent goes into that is full of media. It basically uses up any remaining c02 and gives you a little stronger effluent. Fairly cheap and simple to setup. Secondly, I highly recommend adding kalkwasser if you have the space. It will help keep your PH up like no tomorrow. Lastly, the half thing I'd recommend - is not to worry about ph. If it is over 7.7, that is fine, just let the tank do it's thing :)

@@ParkersReef Thanks so much for the tips , i am going to try that second chamber and kalkwasser , another good one someone told me is to drip the effluent into the refugium and whats exiting the refugium into the venture of the skimmer . Anyway , Thanks for replying.

Hi Matt, our pH has sat at 7.9 since day one and drops to 7.8 during winter when everything is closed up. Just a week ago I added a Kalk reactor so that is still bedding itself in and I am yet to see an increase in pH
@ParkersReef
@ParkersReef 3 жыл бұрын
@@simmo56able interesting, no increase yet.... I'd expect from those levels you'd see an increase quickly (as you know, ph is not a linear scale, so a kalk mix of 10+ should make a quick difference to a tank ph of 7.9. Curious if you can measure the ph of your kalk effluent?

Hi Michael, I must be honest and say it doesn't happen very often but when I do I just use a long suction vacuum you can pick up from any LFS and run it straight into a bucket. We have quite a few snails in the tank and we have tried sand sifting star fish but they eventually get picked off (arms slowly eaten) by one of our fish. We have a lot of coral on the sand bed and I don't like disturbing them too much. However, now that you have mentioned it, it does look a little discoloured so you've given me a job for the Easter break.
