In this episode, John tells us all about his newly acquired Long Hive. He walks us through the basics of the long hive construction, and then moves a box of bees into it. It's a pretty simple process if you take your time, and you'll save your back a lot of trouble too.
The long hive John is using is built to hold standard Langstroth frames. Here's some interesting trivia about the Langstroth frame. In 1851, the Reverend Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth (1810-1895), a Philadelphia native, noticed that when his bees had less than 9 mm but greater than 6 mm of space in which to move around, they would neither build comb into that space nor cement it closed with propolis. This measurement is called "bee space". So, now you know where your Langstroth frame gets its name.
Do you use a long hive in your bee yard? What questions do you have about the long hive? Let us know by leaving a comment. We'd love to talk to you!
In this episode, you'll see John using several items that can be purchased at our online store. We are always happy to accept online orders, and if you visit us from KZfaq, please let us know!
Due to the difficulty of logistics, we cannot easily ship this long hive. We sell it in-store only at the current time, but you're always welcome to make a trip to see us. We're located conveniently off of I-40 in scenic Russellville, Arkansas. Come visit with John and Corinne, and we'll load your car for you!

Hi. I have a Horizontal Hive using Jumbo Deep Langstroth Frames, here in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Tip : Your top boards dont need ventilation holes ! The space between the Frames themselves and those Boards is enough internal Ventilation. Think you will find those bees will just gum up those unnecessary holes with Propolis and Wax ! Advise you to view USA Beekeeper KZfaqr Fred Dunn : he doesnt like top Hive Ventilation at all. He has several long Langstroth Horizontal Hive Videos, worth watching for sure. (Bees dont do any top ventilation in Nature !) So why would Beeks add this??? They have their own in house" A/C ": its called Fanning with their 'Wings' ! Done for 100s x1000s of Years. They know best. 😉 Just my thoughts on the matter, if new Beeks watch this and need the reasoing behind it. 👀 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2023 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 My Horizontal Hive was made using the same as yours. A lifted Lid, on a Hinge, with Chains to stop it Tipping over. . . Mine was an " Ex Log Storage Box" Outdoor use pp Wood Burner Stove. That has had an extra inner Cavity Wall built using added Insulation. Decided x4 Inches of Scottish Wool would do the trick ! (Plenty of Sheep Farms about these parts. Wool is dirt cheap if you ask nicely.) 🙃 This Box within a Box gives the Girls a Great x22 Jumbo Deep Frame Capacity Hive Body, with the Brood Nest / Frames at the Sunnier end. Uses x1 Entrance only, on this South Facing Hive. About x1 Third along, is an intergrated Vertical Queen Excluder, and the last Third of the Box being the Honey Super 'Area'. Each top Board has a Kitchen Cabinet Handle for easy lifting. Super easy to lift off wiith Bee Gloves on (!) And added some Plexiglass Drink Coasters in situ. : Covering a x2" pre-cut Hole as Viewing Ports to each Board (!) Really handy to peek through to see if the Bees are OK, without lifting any Inner Board, especially in low season or mid Winter. No heat gets out ! No draughts or condensation occur, as the internal Mesh [VM] Floor deals with airflow. Nice and simple. And its worked brilliantly for x4 years now. 👍 Regular Box Hives have resulted in some form of 'Deadouts' in this time. Interesting to compare... This 'Log Box' was really Deep, so it had an Inner Mid Floor (Wire Mesh) added : to do regular Varroa Mite drop [Treatments] : Checks. And the lower area (externally)with its own (hinged lengthwise) Draw Front : is my Bee Tool Equipment Stash under Store ! Takes my Bee Smoker, Sawdust Fuel, Queen Cages, Pollen Patty Tub, even a Varroa Mite Board (using an ex : Kitchen Teacup Carry Tray, Baking Oil Sprayed : to take the Critter Count.) Done just like that. . . Simples. 😎 You can make a great Hive out of anything really ! : Just measure your Frames 'Style of choice' (:US Langstroth, UK National, French Warre, Scottish Smith, etc, etc.) And add some Bee Space 'x2' and you have a working Hive. Sorted ! 👍

I’m building a long hive now , but I love rapid round feeders so much I’m gonna figure a feeder shim system out for the top to give me space to be able to feed all winter if I have to without opening the heated interior of the hive your feed system looks like it works ok but the rapid round feeders can hold a gallon of syrup at a time and they never leak , i guess that’s the main reason I like em so much , very good video by the way I hit the thumb and the subscribe!! 😄good luck this year !

@@CentralBeekeepersSupply the only thing I recommend for your viewers new to beekeeping if they use rapid round feeders is to get a 2-3 t toddler sock 🧦 and cut the toe out of it and stretch it over the inner hole so you don’t lose bees in the swamp of syrup , a toeless sock makes them bullet proof and it’s easier to feed right over the brood , it’s even easier for the long hive and less death from starvation in the winter because you are feeding right over the brood and they don’t break cluster

I have long hives and so far have no complaints. With regard to cold, I’m in S.Ga so winters are pretty mild but we do get down into the mid 20’s, my hives are made with 2” thick pine (2x12) material so the bees have quite a bit of insulation. There are ways of adding “quilt boards” to the tops of these hives. It’s basically a box that fits under the cover and on top of your top board. This box is usually filled with raw wool fiber or some other insulating material (box is only an inch or 2 thick depending on your needs.). Between that, the 2 inch walls, and if need be, you can wrap the hive with material to add more insulation. My bees have wintered well in them. Haven’t had much of a moisture issue either. Some folks just added insulative material above the cover boards without an additional box. As long as the bees can’t get to it an make a mess out of it, that works as well. Hope this helps.

1 comment & 1 question: Comment - I tried a Long Langstroth about 4 years ago and it had horrible moisture problems. It rotted after just 1 year. I don't know if it was the design I used, the over size, or the materials (pine 3/4" plywood cut into planks) - it was not just the environment because it was sitting next to my traditional langstroth hives and they typically last 4 years or more. I was kind of hoping to see some advice on how to prevent humidity from causing these kinds of problems in my next attempt. Question - on the feeder: why not just use a normal frame feeder? I use them (from MotherLode Products) and keep them in all 60+ of my Langstroth hives all year long (even when not feeding). Seems to be much easier than cutting into the follower board...

I have a question I’ve been watching to be videos multiple sites I’m just curious how come no beekeepers try to winter the bees on the inside with the right temperature also with plants that they can feed on all winter and then went to The weather breaks take them outside so they can do their duty with pollinating everything and then when the winter comes again bring them back inside. Now curious the mites do they get them from being outside so if you had them inside all year long even during the summer with that eliminate them from getting mites thank you
@CentralBeekeepersSupply
@CentralBeekeepersSupply 2 жыл бұрын
I get what you're saying, and yes it's been done. Heating and cooling is a huge issue, however the northern states have had some success with this. They warehouse the bees in winter and move out in the spring. The bees pick up the mites from other flying insects because they are social and forage together. So, anytime they're allowed to be outside they are subjected to more mites. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
@cornerstonehoneybees2525
@cornerstonehoneybees2525 2 жыл бұрын
It takes 2 million flower visits to make 1 pound of honey. A typical hive needs about 50lbs of honey to get through a winter. I don't think you could have enough plants inside a building to even begin to make a dent in what they need to survive a winter. Plus the fact that bees travel 3 miles (or more) to forage - they would not want to be caged inside even a building as large as a domed football stadium.

They definitely save the lifting and twisting that many of us beekeepers dread. We highly recommend the long hive! Thanks for the comment, my friend. Best of luck this coming season. Let us know if you ever need anything!

It's surprising to me to see how many people let their smokers go out and then instead of smoking them with nice cool smoke they blast them with hot air and ash...please bee better-what an example you would be if you just stopped and relit your smoker.
