This was the John Smith Tribute Speech written by Karen, a good friend of Mary Brown for what would be Mary's final festival as owner/operator of the Festival of the West.
Robert Fuller was kind enough to read the speech in John's honor.
Mary started the Festival of the West in honor of John in 1991, so it was befitting that she ended it with a tribute to her friend and childhood hero, John "Smitty" Smith.
Due to some technical difficulties, the slide show was not able to be displayed during the speech as planned so I used a split screen to bring them both together.
Special thanks to Mr. Fuller for doing such a wonderful job on the speech and thanks to Peggy for the video footage

John Smith, and, Robert Fuller were a big part of my Western entertainment life as a young boy, the very embodiment of what a Cowboy was in the Old West, should both be in the Cowboy Hall of Fame !!! I REMEMBER in 2021! !!

I absolutely, love watching Laramie on Grit. John Smith and Robert Fuller were so dynamic together. And such good genuine chemistry on camera. I always felt that John was just like the character he played. I will continue to watch Laramie everyday. Truly a inspiring man.

Even after hearing and seeing this great event in person, I still enjoy hearing Bob give a wonderful tribute to two of his very dear friends. There is no one that could have done this any better than our beloved Mr. Robert Fuller!

What a wonderful tribute. I've only recently discovered Laramie and my husband and I watch all the episodes on Grit TV every day. So glad to hear John Smith was the warm, gentleman he portrayed as Slim Sherman and to hear Robert Fuller speak of their friendship. It makes me sad that he wondered if anyone remembered him. How can so fine an actor be forgotten? Thank you Robert Fuller for all you continue to do for your fans. Slim and Jess, the best pardners ever.

I can think of a number of actors who might have been cast all those years ago as Jess and Slim, but Bob and John made something magical happen for us all. Their easy way with the tales they told convinced me that these were men to be admired, and lots of us (cowboys and cowgirls alike) wanted to grow up to be like our heroes. To Bob and John and Jess and Slim - You will be long remembered, respected and loved by your many fans. Great thanks to Mary for FOTW and to everyone for this video.

I have not met Mary Brown or Mr. Fuller, but listing to this very special tribute to them both is very heartwarming. From watching this this video you can see why so many Western Fans return year after year to the "Festival of the West", friendship, love and deep abiding dedication to a part of American History that has ridden into the sunset. Thank you for making this video and sharing it with us all.

Mr. Fuller, I saw you present this at FOTW, and it brought me to tears then. Even on video, the magic is still there, and still bringing tears. You did a wonderful job despite the technical glitches...At FOTW I was seated next to someone who knew nothing about you, Mary, FOTW or Laramie, and when it was over, she turned to me and said, "That was wonderful! I'm in tears!" That was quite a tribute to what you, Karen and Kimber created... Thank you so much..

This was a wonderful tribute to John Smith. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in its creation. I discovered Laramie only a year ago and was captivated by both Robert Fuller and John Smith's portrayals. For a show created 50 years ago to still attract new fans is a tribute to a well crafted work. I want to say a special thanks to Kimber for steering me toward the fan sites. It is great to find folk who share common ground.

Wow ? John Smith, after viewing him in an interview in what looks like his early 50's and in just a few minutes of listening to him one can only be impressed by how humble and honest he seems to be. You must have been a lucky one to have had his friendship.

Exactly ... and I think their contrasting temperaments but similar strength of character lead to the amazing chemistry between them that made Laramie such a great show. Both Smitty and Robert Fuller are such great actors. I hope he is resting in peace.

Pat ... me too!!!! I quite honestly never knew of Laramie in 1959. I was only 7-years-old then and no westerns would have been watched in my home then. My dad only allowed the Yankee games and maybe the Ed Sullivan Show. We had to always be doing homework or reading or studying. But now, I am glued to the television every morning for both episodes and again at 5:00 pm. No dinner is even started until Laramie is finished and I also record them on the DVR in case, G-d forbid, I miss one minute for some kind of rare emergency.

Such a shame John Smith was "an avid hunter". And that Robert Fuller was too. These facts spoil my impressions of both of them. To kill for pleasure is never admirable.
