I met Tom once when I was training at University of Iowa as a kid and he is 100% the most intense person I've ever met in my life lol. But you can see it comes from a place of passion and love for the sport, that's all. They aren't mean at all, quite the contrary. He was pretty pissed at one of his wrestlers for not being eligible because of grades and as he was leaving he grabbed me by my shoulders and looked me straight in the eyes and told me something along the lines of "Don't you ever throw away your opportunities in life like that, do you understand?" I was pretty intimidated and was just like "yes sir" lol, you know Brands with those crazy eyes.

Man…to see these guys wrestle with both in their prime woulda been a sight to see. Brands was a straight jackhammer. He would beat you down until you didn’t want to wrestle him anymore. Smith could take you down half way across the mat with that lethal low single.
@scourge8097

You do know that....this happened, right? I have the score as 15-3 but I'm not sure. There are so many changes with the scoring. It used to be if you went hand to hand those turns were only worth 1(but if your elbow buckled it was 2 and Brands does on at least one occasion). Pretty sure they didn't have tech's then or Smith would have had it. Also, you said prime, so maybe you were aware of this and you simply meant later in Brands career(his prime).
@steppingtotheam281
@steppingtotheam281 Жыл бұрын
@@scourge8097 Yup, I should have clarified. Smith got the better of Brands but Brands was still a little wet behind the ears. If that version of Brands was about 4-6 years older, there would have been a totally different outcome. I’m not saying Brands would 100% win. I just think that match would have been a COMPLETE dogfight.
@scourge8097
@scourge8097 Жыл бұрын
@@steppingtotheam281 It'd be interesting. I really think it comes down to Smith's gas tank. Those two 3 minute periods it was a little easier to make a guy gas...but I don't recall that with Smith. Brands really never got that much better technically. He was always good, but he was never slick. He just KEPT coming and he was so physical and relentless. So I think Smith picks him apart early and then it's just a matter of can Smith match Brands pace like Cross did? I don't know, but it WOULD definitely have been interesting.

If you want to train and work hard 3 months out of the year, well, then, University of Northern Iowa is a great place to go. If you want to bust your tail 6 months out of the year, you should be very happy at Iowa State. Iowa Hawkeye wrestling is on an entirely different level. No team has a fan base quite as passionate nor *sell out an arena as often. No team has the cult following as intense as this legendary wrestling program year after year* The fans in Iowa view Hawkeye wrestlers as superhuman. You won't see this in any other program. In Iowa there's no professional teams. Its Iowa wrestling and the rest is irrelevant. Penn State, Oklahoma State great fans with-out a doubt. But the Hawkeyes have led the country for 16 straight year's in dual-meet attendance and many years before that. The only place that can rival watching college wrestling in Carver-Hawkeye Arena is Kinnick Stadium! The school's football stadium where they've held multiple dual-meets of 48,000 plus! If you want to experience an electrifying spine chilling atmosphere, Hawkeye fan or not. I encourage you to visit Iowa City. The Black and Gold faithful have a love affair with Iowa wrestling. It can be described in one word. *Family* Like the Cowboys their rich tradition runs deep and their record speaks for itself. NCAA championships: 1975, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2021 Conference tournament championships: 1915, 1916, 1958, 1962, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2020, 2021

Watching the meets in Iowa City is so much fun. I love the wrestling culture and tradition here in Iowa. Iowa Hawkeye fans are the best and Iowa wrestling is legendary.

@Ben Lewis They've had a good run but Iowa beat them this year for the NCAA team title. Penn state has 9 of those in total, Iowa has acquired 9 consecutively and 24 in total. Iowa also has a much better head to head record against Penn state in meets(28-10), has longer win streaks against them(8 consecutively), and the largest victory(36-3). Penn state and Iowa are obviously the best in the country and Penn state was better for a while there, but Iowa is still beating them overall. Iowa just beat them too, so they are more than capable of beating Penn state in 2021.
