To make matters even more interesting, John Stonehouse was an MP during the 1974 Labour hung parliament. Before it was discovered he was actually alive, the Labour party literally had a majority of ONE. Pairing was also off, meaning that desperate attempts had to be made to get every last MP into the House of Parliament to vote--one guy apparently had to be helicoptered in, and numerous elderly Labour MPs had to be carted out of hospitals and care homes in order to be able to turn up. It was a wild time.

Almost literally the case in a recent rush vote where there were a lot of rebelling government MPs that were threatening to swing it for the opposition stance and so everyone who was conscious and vaguely lucid was private ambulanced to the scene... there was a whole kerfuffle about one MP in a wheelchair (broken leg, but it would have been just as problematic if they were in it for any other reason) being held up from going through the voting chamber because the only chair that would fit was one of those hospital style ones which requires someone else to push you... and so that means there's two people going through... even though one of them isn't an MP... and, oh, panic! (I don't know how that story resolved but I assume they were eventually able to knock heads sufficiently to realise they just needed another MP who was voting that way anyway to push the chair through...)

if anyone's still wondering if John Stonehouse's Houdini trick led to the abandonment of the Postmaster General ministerial position, it didn't. Stonehouse was the last UK Postmaster General because his job title was changed into Minister of Posts and Telecommunications in 1969. this was also when the Post Office transformed from a government department into a public corporation.

Chris' reaction speed to being dinged for mentioning telegraphy is downright impressive... "which we have to do at least once or twice a seas-" *DING* "-oh f*** off" **headdesk** _didn't even miss a beat,_ turned what would have been the "o" of season into the start of "oh". I mean, he wasn't even looking at Tom or anything, it was a split second twitch on hearing the start of the ding sound. What part of his daily life requires such a finely honed sound-reactive and moreover fully cognotive reflex?

For those who are curious about 'Labour-Cooperative MP', the Cooperative Party is a left-wing party in the UK, and is the third-largest party by number of MPs. However, since 1927, it has had an electoral pact with Labour, so a limited number of Labour MPs are also Cooperative MPs. Edit: Just to be clear, all Cooperative MPs are Labour MPs.

Timothy McLean I'd imagine the right wing is the same everywhere. Any differences that exist are merely down to the cultural attributes of each individual country. Come to think of it, commies aren't any different . Fascism and Communism are just different masks on the same face. Different aspects of the same mentality. Che Guevara is the only socialist I'll always respect. With a few possible exceptions, the rest are just champagne socialists. I'd rather live in a capitalist country though. Such countries thrive and prosper and the people tend to be more civilised.

It's not that common, the French right was in favour of a strong government for decades, and was strongly involved with industry (they own a part of most big French companies, including private banks, car manufacturers, train builders, etc). I don't know if this is a thing in the UK, but here in the USA, our "Chinese" food often has a menu item of "General Tso's Chicken", sometimes just called General('s) chicken. So, if there's a buffet, I often make the joke that I got some general chicken, and some specific chicken.

Eggs Benedict Cumberbatch is still nowhere near John Oliver talking about unencumbered points for whichever MLM that was. "And if you earn enough unencumbered points, they go into an unencumbered batch, which qualifies Benedict Cumberbatch for one unencumbered cucumber cummerbund"

Thanks for making me feel very old. I knew what you were going to talk about on seeing the title :-) This is definitely worth a TV/radio show. Radio Caroline got the BBC World Service MW band in the last couple of days. Xmas pressie!
@gwenynorisu6883

Well, that's me finding some AAs to shove in the old bathroom radio that hasn't seen regular service for a few months and seeing if the MW band still works... NB, did you mean MW, or LW? I wasn't aware the World Service was _on_ MW, just LW and FM. And they were intending to phase out the LW transmission when the last of the mercury rectifier tubes (yes, seriously) used for the transmitter burned out because the listenership wasn't sufficient to be worth modernising the system, which would leave a nice gap around 198khz for someone else to slip into. (which sounds like bollocks to me - you could just create a suitable signal using a SDR these days, and use any reasonably wideband RF amplifier to juice it up to transmission strength... I reckon they just didn't want to be fussed with the electric bill for running two separate transmissions. Even though it's not something that's supposed to make money, and is meant to be a *service* that can travel long distances and be easily picked up halfway around the world for at least a couple hours a day. Apparently a lot of their foreign listeners use the internet now...? That's not exactly going to work well in China or North Korea, or anywhere else that either filters or essentially flat out bans the net, now, is it? But you can hack together a simple LW receiver from a handful of transistors and a coil of wire...) And now I need to stop before I start getting misty eyed over picking up a forever noisy and drifting Atlantic 252 (on the old Luxembourg frequency) back in the day and thinking it was the coolest thing ever, even though they played much the same stuff as any other station.
