This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on John Stuart Mill's work Utilitarianism, specifically on chapter 2, where, after introducing his distinction between higher and lower pleasures, Mill discusses difference in quality of pleasures. There are higher pleasures - associated with higher faculties of the human being - and lower pleasures - associated with lower faculties.

A great short lecture on JS Mill, I do agree with Mill argument on the differences between qualitatively higher and lower pleasures and I’m writing that from my own experiences. I used to indulge myself in a lot of hobbies that were just time consuming then I discovered the works of Aristotle and everything changed since then I have been reading constantly on a wide mix of topics from science to economics and I just recently brought Edward Gibbon book on the roman empire , two years ago there would be no chance I would be reading a book on the roman empire because as soon as one discovers the works of Aristotle a whole world of philosophy opens up as the field is so diverse and just today I was listening to a BBC 4 radio show on the philosophy of logical positivism which I hope to learn about in more detail in the near future. So thanks again as these lectures are invaluable and it has really helped me on a personal level as well.

You're very welcome. I tend to think that Mill is right in the main outlines about this distinction between higher and lower. Interestingly, what he's actually doing is replicating Aristotle's own views about these matters

16:48 looks like he erased the chalk board with the back of his shirt, excuse my childish observation. Ive recently become interested in "higher pleasures" seemingly unbenounced to me. This lecture was informative as ive just ventured down the philosophy path and the distinguishment between higher and lower pleasures was revealing. As i have wondered why recently i have aquired an endless thirst for knowledge and actively searching for it as opposed to being satisfied with video games and tv. Now, i still enjoy some "lower pleasures" but nothing compares to diving down the rabbit hole of endless knowledge.

Is not utilitarianism an attempt to build a "scientific" ethics ideally based on some measurable criteria? In such case, Mill's amendment ruins the whole project since it introduces a circular argument. To say that pleasures can be higher or lower is the same as to say they can be of a better or worse type, so we are using here the implicit notion of good and bad in the definition of what is good and bad.
@GregoryBSadler

Well, I suppose you want to look at his criteria more closely. I don't see it as circular in the way you're arguing, when Mill's theory is fully understood. And I'm not a proponent of Mill or Utilitarianism - so I haven't got a dog in the fight

May I ask you what ethic system you yourself share and which one is the most popular among the modern philosophers?

I'm a virtue ethicist. Among contemporary philosophers, I'd say some version of utilitarianism or of some rights based ethics tends to be the most popular

Im a first year Uni student and im taking a first year course on philosophy. What I was looking for content wise was a short video that covers content clearly, quickly and correctly. I understand youre going for the classroom feel and this being the only video of yours ive seen try being more direct, specific and structured while moving through the content. When it comes to these videos, typically your viewer are students who have already been in class and heard the lecture but need a different explanation or a specific piece of info. Keep it S. Simple, Short and Specific.
