Their website is claiming "England’s Oldest Inn" and eleven centuries but doesn't actually put a precise date on it. My last trip to Nottingham included a pub crawl featuring the _three_ pubs with various claims to the same or similar title: Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem claims to have been established in 1189, though the earliest known reference to that particular name is 1799 and prior to that as The Pilgrim with the earliest reference at 1751. No documentation supports its earlier claims though evidence suggests the caves in the rock under Nottingham Castle on which the pub is built were once a brewhouse, with the castle having been built in 1067. The oldest parts of the pub date 1650-1660 and a map shows a previous building on site in 1610. It's location of Brewhouse Yard acquired its name after 1680. So pick the bones out of that one... Then there's the other two, Ye Olde Salutation Inn and The Bell Inn. "The Sal" has parts dating back to 1240, then known as The Archangel Gabriel Salutes the Virgin Mary. Sometime before 1271 Nottingham Whitefriars established a friary on what is now Friar Lane with lands that included a guesthouse on the site of what is now the Bell Inn. The current building was built 1420-37. A Channel 4 doc series in 1998, History Hunters, concluded that of the three, Ye Olde Salutation was the oldest _building_ and Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem had the oldest caves (there's also caves under The Sal) but the Bell had been the earliest in use as a pub. Plus Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans, north of London, claiming to have been in business since 793 AD. The pub was once recognized as the oldest in England by the Guinness World Records, but this title was wrested in 2000. The building is described by Historic England as being of 16th-century appearance, but as the earliest date for which it can be proved to have been licensed is 1756, and even that date is not certain, its claim to this record is somewhat uncertain. Even in St Albans, the White Hart and the Fleur de Lys (currently called 'The Snug') are believed to have been trading as inns in the late medieval period. Ye Olde Man & Scythe is a public house on Churchgate in Bolton. The earliest recorded mention of its name is in a charter from 1251, making it one of the ten oldest public houses in Britain and the oldest in Bolton. ...This is a Wiki rabbit hole I'm going down. You open up one and it mentions another, you open that up and it mentions another...etc etc...

@@ManWalksDogs Brilliant Knowledge! And to right actually about the Inn comment. Must have housed people before any pints were poured, although next time I go past I'll have a look at the plaque on it as I'm sure there are a few dates mentioned, I remember reading something somewhere! aha!

@@oxfordhousemotionpictures7473 well, wiki mining, rather than my own knowledge (bar having read up on them at the time of visiting the nottz trio exactly four years ago now) Yeah I'm sure it would have some dates somewhere and I'd be interested to know them, but if it's anything like the wooly information above then we'll take it with a pinch of salt! I'd like to visit it all the same, I'm not that bothered if they're the absolute oldest, as long as they've got some decent years in them, say
