An extended interview with Devon traveller John Treagood. John is a well loved character who is regularly seen with his horse and dogs at many different roadside stops in the county. He has a fascinating story to tell and he's been talking to Mark Tyler

The gentleman spoke the prime reason , he lives with nature not against it , his own life , he's served his country , brought up his children . I lived that life , roaming the country and living under canvas . He doesn't beg of the state , it can be done , I've done it . Fine man . Fine life . Deep respect .

I was just browsing and came across it randomly too ... I had this lifestyle for 9 months in the 1970's when I was a 'happy hippy'. My boyfriend and I just took off in our VW campervan and travelled across Europe and North Africa for 9 months. When we got back to the UK, it was the beginning of Summer and we still had money left so we went down to Cornwall for the whole Summer. Then it was time to knuckle down, earn some money and plan our next trip. Yes, I see where he's coming from. It's a great lifestyle.

His accent is very interesting. It's like a modern Southeastern accent but with some striking differences. Here are a couple of things I noticed: 3:41 the "r" in "caravan" 4:22 the "oh" sound in "home" and "suppose"

Like John..I took to the road at a young age..I also ran with the gaff (fairground) for a while). I moved around and carried little. I slept in barns, in the boot of an old abandoned taxi..by the way, that I discovered was breaking the law..I was prosecuted for that. Dad turned up at court..rd the judge I had a home. Outside the court I shouldered my rucksack..said my thanks and goodbye to dad..and off I went again. That was a long time ago now..I am now 71. I still get itchy feet. I now live In Bulgaria..a simple life near a lake. I could not tolerate the thought of working the same job for the rest of my life as was the practice then. I also did not want to live with my parents, dad was very critical and dominating. We were a large family and very poor. So in the end I just walked out and never went back...too live that is. I look back now an adventurous life. RIP...John.. a like minded spirit. I used to wonder how people could live with all the worries of a so called.. normal life. It seems to me that many live their lives from birth to death, in dept. Don't figure. I had few things to think a out..food, a place to sleep and keeping clean. Compare that too what many have to live with every single day. I k ow what freedom taste like...still do.

My mate had an old black cab outside his house and we found 4 homeless kids asleep in it . They had locked themselves in for security he went to get the key and was going to invite them in for some breakfast and a warm up as he had been homeless for a while but they all woke up and ran away as they most likely thought we would give them grief
