Beginning a series of John Waters' appearances on Late Night. Here's Part 1, from 1982:
1. March 18: Glenn Milstead, better known on stage and screen as Divine, performs "Born to Be Cheap." John Waters then joins him in the next two segments, introducing his book Shock Value and discussing his films, which includes a clip from "Polyester."
2. August 24: John again plugs Shock Value and then plays clips from "Female Trouble," "Multiple Maniacs," "Pink Flamingos," and Desperate Living."
In the last segment, John happy describes a letter he received from a "15-year-old kid" who turns out to have been Fred Armisen.
Part 2 (1983-86) here: • John Waters on Letterm...
Part 3 (1987-92) here: • John Waters on Letterm...

The mainstream media still didn't really know how to deal with people like John and Divine at this time.. Boy George and Culture Club had come out only a few months earlier in the U.S.. They were forced to go on shows like Donahue to more or less defend themselves and especially their androgyny. John probably would have loved to have gone on Donahue. You can tell Dave is a little uncomfortable interviewing them.

Dave was always nerdy awkward. Props to Dave for letting them on his show, Johnny Carson wouldn't. What's really nice is that, all Divine's fabulous outrageousness is appropriate, never dominant. When it is his turn to speak or perform, he's there doing the thing. But when it is someone else's turn, he takes a backseat. This demonstrates humility and respect; beautifully balancing the outrageous fabulousness.

I was lucky enough to meet Divine, at Taboo night club, in Detroit, one week before she passed away. I knew the promoter, and he was kind enough to take me back stage to her dressing room after the show. It was less than 30 minutes after her performance, I was brought to the dressing room, and he was already out of costume, wearing a robe, makeup and wig gone. I felt like I was intruding. I introduced myself, told him how much I enjoyed the times I’d seen her perform. He was very kind. I’d never asked for an autograph from any celebrity I’d ever met, but he offered me one which I gladly accepted. He signed it “for John, love Divine, ‘88”. I heard the news a week later he was found in his hotel room, dead from a heart attack. I felt so sorry for him. He seemed so alone in that dressing room. I wished I had said something to make him smile. I still have the autograph.

Just know that by going back there to meet Divine and finding Harris Glen Milstead instead, and not making a big deal of it, made him very pleased and happy. He always wanted to be known as a true actor. It is sad that so many never saw him as that. All most saw was "drag queen". He was far more than that and you gave him that happiness.

@@JeffmChicago I saw Sylvester several times. He was very talented and a real pioneer. He didn't get quite the amount of media exposure that Divine did with movies etc. He did make a bigger impact in music. Sylvester was more a member of the gay community than Divine. Divine sold himself as an actor in a dress and was entering mainstream media, movies and TV shows. Sylvester never wavered from being exactly who he was which limited his acceptance in mainstream other than music. It is unfortunate that so few remember Sylvester or his contribution to music and gay culture.

We figured it out after seeing a bunch of bright graffiti saying things like "Trash Queen" as well as some wonderfully gaudy pink flamingos decorating his tombstone shortly after the day he died. It is so important to listen to the conversation Dave has with Divine about, "What she is." Dave wants to learn about Divine without saying something hurtful to, but he doesn't have the language or vocabulary to express his curiosity in a non-cringe way. @@ommeloise6309 Most people do, though. And yes, Divine got type cast in Woman's roles. He did do a couple of male roles. In the John waters movie "Female troubles" he played a small role as a degenerate alcoholic who had sex with teenage female divine. Once, and became the father of her child. Yes, the two characters played by Divine had sex with each other, and John Waters managed to have that happen on screen. Later, he started doing films without John waters. In the first one, the crappy "Lust in the Dust," he was again stuck playing a female, basically female Divine in the old West. But in another movie, he played a man. An effeminate man (which he was) but clearly a man, and a gangster, too. I never saw that movie, and not very many other people did either. It flopped. So divine remained type cast.

I live in Vienna and John Waters was lecturing here a few months ago and there was an 18 something year old who was behind me in line dressed as Devine and I met her again after she was very excited as she was going to get an autograph or talk to Waters. Can you imagine a teenager in Vienna in this era being influenced by this stuff? I love it. And thank you for Hairspray because we can't stop the wave ❤

John is a genius. Sure, SOME of his early stuff had some teeny bits that were a little too much. But, overall, what a body of work. He must be fascinating to talk to. I'd have a million questions for him about pop culture for starters, and then I would just listen, refraining so hard from interupting him. Thank you for your work in peicing these together and sharing them. Peace!

I was thrilled to meet Divine at Taboo in Detroit. I was allowed to go backstage and say hello to her after the show. She was very nice and out of all the celebrities I met in the 80’s, she was the only one I got an autograph from. I was shocked when I learned the following week, she had died in Los Angeles. I still have the autograph, and always thought it strange that she dated it in the corner. The friend who I went with (whose name I cant remember) threw her autograph away.

Divine was fantastic. I met him out of character in Houston - after one of his shows @ a restaurant. He was so kind and down to earth... And VERY well dressed in a beautiful ,double breasted blue suit... He was sitting by himself, which I later found out was a way from him to decompress after his shows.. I had watched ALL of his films about a year before in a Divine mini festival.. Needless to say, I was permanently warped, forever. In a good way .. Divine is a national treasure. And the performers /drag queens of today do NOT come even close to the gems of yesteryear..

in 2001 I was a young female bartender in Provincetown, MA... a very gay "art colony" town. I met John Waters at a local watering hole and spoke to him about art a few times, and then later at the restaurant/bar where I worked. He was very sweet and we had a couple of lovely conversations. A few weeks later, his nephew was visiting from out of town and Mr. Waters sent him to my place of business where he asked me out, because his Uncle told him I was the best "straight" girl in town. LOL.
