Well that's a surprise, I've never seen the complete concert before, and I was the drummer at that time back in 1982. Typical German TV bad sound mix but better than nothing. Thanks for the upload.

Deleba333 Well this is fun. I have often wondered how things going with you, but also with Dave Purdye. Do you still hear anything from him?
@Deleba3339 жыл бұрын
I'm doing fine, I moved to Germany and continued working a lot in recording studios and playing live. Unfortunately I never had any more contact with Dave but I see John now and again when he's on tour.

Deleba333 Ok. Anyway, nice to hear from you. I often watch concerts of Fischer-Z. Maybe one day we'll see each other. By the way, sorry for my English, I'm from Belgium but the German language I know even less. ;-)

I saw this same lineup play Paradiso, Amsterdam, in April '82. It was also recorded for radio (KRO Rocktemple I believe) and I used to have a cassette, taped off radio, of more or less the same playlist. It's funny to see that JW and Fischer Z are still so popular in particularly Germany, whilst in Holland they seem to have lost most of that support. A turning point may have been the era of the 'Reveal' album which was, frankly, bagged by the critics... I myself kept following John until I moved to England (where he's virtually unknown) in the late nineties. I now live in Australia, where So long was a minor hit, and occasionally plays on 'old farts' radio..

Thank you for your personnal account. FischerZ were accountable for headlining the first real stadium-concert in Portugal, early 80´s. JW never really "returned" after the nineties, adding to that "monk-like" aura of the old bard amid the forests.

Great memories. Watched the concert on German television in 1982. In my opinion this would be the best "Fischer-Z" line up. Bedankt voor het uploaden!

Dave Purdye, why couln't you bother to learn the glorious, beautiful, proper bassline in "So long". Seldom have I seen and heard such a great song being ruined by lazyness. Terrible job.
@Lieven0685 жыл бұрын
Oh my god, are you serious? Dave purdye is one of the best bassists that John has had. Never heard of own interpretation? For me it is great to hear So Long that way.
@NonioGuitarChannel5 жыл бұрын
Own interpretation is great unless it compromises the song's integrity wich, in my opinion is the case. "So long" has a very catchy major-scale bassline that most bass players (and others) love and learn how to play, surely that must mean something. This so-called version has turned the song into a most common one without that bassline. To be quite honest John himself hasn't quite been a very dedicated trasure keeper when it comes to his live versions of his material, sorry to say so.

@@NonioGuitarChannel The fact is, it's not written in stone how a song has to be played, things get changed every time musicians join or leave a band. Generally musicians don't like to just copy what has been played before, I for one wouldn't consider copying Steve Liddle, he's a fine drummer, but we have totally different styles and influences. It was enough for me to just learn the arrangements and then inject my style into the song. What's the point in having a new line up and then sounding like 5 years ago, that's not what change is about. Dave Purdye is only doing what professional musicians do, being himself.
@NonioGuitarChannel5 жыл бұрын
@@Deleba333, I actually do not disagree with you. I just think that many times a song has some key elements that can't be disregarded as is ths song's bassline and the pretty guitar lines on the chorus. Purdye can and must be himself, sure. However people might get the impression he just wasn't able to deal with the song's original basslines or didn't bother to.

I think this So Long version is one of the best I've ever heard. With THIS bass line and Dave's distinctive touch dynamics. Ingenious
