There are some that love horses and like to baby them. There are others that like to ride and use their horses. Watching the horse stunts relaxes me. Riding will relax me. Sometimes I like to saddle one of my wife's horses and run it on a 2 to 3 mile round trip to the hills and back. Afterwards, I come back to the barn on a tired horse. My wife lets me know she is pissed because I didn't ask her or was gone too long. As for me, it's an incredible feeling and great stress relief reliever - putting a comfortable saddle on a horse, running it for a couple of long stretches of trail, then bringing it home and taking care of it.

He likely overnights at trailside Bed-&-Board RoadHouses, with bath. 😉

The movie was made in a different time and attitudes. Horses were plentiful and cheap - such as surplus ranch horses and, retired livery and school horses. Some of the movie horses had a hard life such as being saddled and at dawn and ridden until late afternoon by uncaring riders. The unlucky horses that were picked to do the trip wire falls and trips pits often ended up with broken necks, legs, or a combination of these. Sometimes a wrangler put a bullet in the horse's head and sometimes, the horses were left to die. Once in awhile, the horses got up, only to get saddled and ridden the next day with another running-w or into a trip pit. As for the stunt riders, except for the big names, the rider's got 5 to 8 dollars to throw a horse with a running-w or gallop the horse into a covered trip pit.

Jumping on horseback never hurt any horse. It was done many times daily at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City. Vets declared it was not dangerous and none suffered any injuries.
