"Why" was a good question. John Huston on the subject once famously said, "There's no good excuse to remake a film that was done right in the first place". And Ford and Wayne's Stagecoach was certainly done right.

You have yourself a, "Word On Westerns" leading lady in Stephanie Rob. She's got a great memory and assessment of the who's who of our cowboy heroes and I still have a crush on her. I'm still perplexed by the tyrantic nature of John Ford. Undeniably genus in his craft but certainly unnecessarily cruel and most surprisingly toward John Wayne who idolized him and probably "the Duke" was as much a boost to Ford's career as anyone else he directed. Keep Em Coming Rob, you're the GOAT in western folklore.

I briefly saw Stephanie Powers playing polo in The Hamptons over a Labor Day weekend while covering The Hampton Classic Horse Show in the late 1980’s or early 1990’s. I saw her between chukkas as I filled in the grassy holes made by the horses’ hooves. Till this day, 30 years later, I wish I had approached her at least to thank her for her performance in McLintock! and maybe get an autograph. I wish her well.

I love how Rob, because of his great film knowledge, is able to inspire and bring out these great memories from these great actors. Isn't that what we all sometimes love to do is to just visit casually and talk about our experiences, failures and successes and especially when we can laugh at ourselves and enjoy the ride that is life. Thanks again Rob for your great ability to bring out the best, just as a great director does, in these guests you have.

Peter Sellers who as written, was to play several parts in Strangelove (he eventually played three), was also supposed to do the Slim Pickens part and ride that bomb down himself. But Sellers had suffered an injury and was unable to do it, and so Slim was at last moment drafted to do what turned out to be his most iconic role. Stefanie is always a great interview. Beautiful, very bright and a wonderful story teller.

Great interview. Stephanie Powers is excellent at articulating memories and stories she has from throughout her career. PS - I was born in Shreveport, and Stephanie probably broke the record for the most times I heard my old hometown mentioned in one interview. LOL! (Although, it's possible that some old country artist with ties to "The Louisiana Hayride" days might've given her some competition on that).

I've always thought that Stefanie Powers in McLintock! was one of the most beautiful ladies seen on screen. I've always considered North to Alaska (1960) the film where John Wayne started changing his character to more of a comedic character.

I notice that so many actors from days gone by have such distinct voices along with their good looks as they mature. Their voices are ignored, for other work. The voice over actors today lack emotions in their voices. Which in my opinion is why radio actors were so successful they acted with their voices. Ms. Powers voice while feminine, has that gift. Her passion for her roles shines through in her voice. She could defknitely voice over a sexy voice. And with a serious voice as well in documentaries.....

Great interview with Stefanie Powers. Here's a little trivia point, 'One Eyed Jacks' is Terry Gilliam's favorite all time movie!

Ah yes, One Eyed Jacks! That movie is among my top 5 all time favorite westerns. I have it on DVD and have watched it many times. Stefanie is right, there is something fundamentally different about One Eyed Jacks from your typical western. The story could really be told in any setting or era. Betrayal, revenge, greed, friendship, complex romance. The movie had it all. Not only that, the players were all great. All of them, top of the line, cream of the crop. In addition to that, they were all in their prime, delivering their best! Then the setting was unusual for a Western. In contrast to the Monument Valley scenery Ford was so fond of, we are treated to old Monterey, fiestas, ocean beaches. Really well done. Now, the tech stuff about movie production, I am not up to speed on at all. But my copy is shot in Tecnicolor ( or something ) and the colors are noticably rich and deep. Also, it is shot in some kind of wide screen format that really shows off the beautiful settings.

McClintock , I think is my favorite movie of all time. Great interview with Stephanie . Thanks.

As always a great interview with a great lady. One thing you could always say about Stefanie Powers is that not only was she stunning beautiful then and which she remains to this day, but she and her characters were always strong intelligent women. This interview got great remembrances and insights into so many films and the people who made them in a most personal way. I always marvel at the editing job that you did for original episode with her, because I don't how you were able to cut so many great asides out. One just has to view the literal gold in this episode to marvel at editing job in deciding what not to include in the original.

For STEFANIE POWERS the 1962 Blake Edwards thriller EXPERIMENT IN TERROR was her big break... in 1966 she starred in THE GIRL FROM U.N.C.L.E but that was a total disappointment, yet she made the remake of STAGECOACH. Naturally the original STAGECOACH is a genuine classic, but the 'remake' is quite good also, specially the stunt work with Hal Needham and the cinematography of veteran Ford/Wayne DP Bill Clothier. Director Gordon Douglas handled the assignment quite well considering the obvious criticism and loathing any director was bound to get in messing with a classic. "Why" was it remade -simple MONEY! The same reason why any movie is remade, if it worked great the first time maybe it will the second or third time, but of course that rarely is the case -who said HOLLYWOOD ever learns from their costly mistakes... Powers was very good with Rob, although her story of how much 'directing' John Ford did on McLintock has varied considerably over the years as all our memories seem to do with age. Living with Bill Holden I expect was not as easy as one would think with his drinking problem and all, but obviously she was up to the task and cared for him deeply. Pappy Ford was always a tyrant on set and even off, but even he realized starting in the 1950's that the stars of his movies had more clout with the studio than he did, so he'd better not let his tyranny run riot with them. As theater owners used to say "putting bums on seats was what it was all about" as the movie going public were going to see the stars not the director, that is unless it was Cecil B. DeMille or Alfred Hitchcock. Ford was one of the most acclaimed directors ever, but he was only a box-office favorite when he had a big name star like Duke Wayne attached.

Wayne's visit to Harvard Lampoon was quite a satirical event, where the honoree put up with loads of sarcasm and outrageousness. Growing up in Boston I recall that day when Duke Wayne visited Harvard and charmed all the Harvard libs with his acceptance of the honor! Wayne actually received lots of good publicity and by the end of the Harvard Square Theater event the students gave him quite an ovation.

Such a bright charming Lady, you lucky dog. Lol

brando was up against it from the start with one eyed jacks purely for being brando! john wayne had similar bad press while making the alamo for not being john ford! kubricks departure was seen as vanity from a knowall star instead of the truth as stephanie relates.its a shame as brando did a first class job.his so called extravagance and lunacy for taking weeks to film a wave breaking on the beach would be hailed as genius if kubrick had done the same.indeed david lean on lawrence spent months in the desert filming sand! on ryans daughter he was acclaimed for taking months to film the perfect wave in the storm scene.in fact he even left ireland and eventually filmed it in south africa at huge cost! but brando was just an actor so obviously couldnt direct! i wonder what the critics who destroyed him would make of the great clint eastwood?
