I really enjoyed the movie when it first came out but I think the sequels are getting to over the top. This is a very stylized movie and I think it works against the sequels and makes them more ridiculous. This really should have been a standalone movie.

I like the fact that John doesn't kill everything that moves. The doorman he let walk away. As he chases the women out of Viggo's vault in the church he actually says "Have a nice day"- I got a good laugh from that.

@@mrsleep0000 - John obviously knew Francis on a first name basis. I'm guessing he is a decent sort of dude, and the fact that he was a doorman tells you he's kinda low level in the organization. John has no interest in taking him out. - PS - It's an interesting scene showing John's nature. He knows (and is friendly with) the low level help. I'm betting that neither Viggo, nor his son Iosef, could have told you Francis' name. They're not the kind of people that concern themselves with the hired help.

The doorman was Kevin Nash, the ex WWF professional wrestler. He has confirmed that when he says “over 60 pounds/kilograms” the fact that *60* is highlighted is his giving John a heads up on the numbers of the mooks he had waiting for him. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p5uchbeTs76yp6M.html

John was a retired assassin with millions stashed. Most people miss a key detail during the hospital scene. John kisses her forehead and then nods to the doctor to turn off the life-support. At the end John was at a veterinary kill shelter and the puppy he took was due to be killed the next day.

This movie is called gun-foo by gun nuts. So many movies are unrealistic as to firearm useage, but this serious seeks to be real, based on 3-gun competitive shooting (pistol, rifle, and shotgun all being used). This becomes even more obvious in the 2nd John Wick. Reeves did an extensive amount of firearm training for these movies.

The sequels do more world-building for the Wick universe. This first John Wick story starts smaller with a glimpse of the New York area, but as the films go along they introduce a larger, global underworld system. John Wick 2 was quite good. John Wick 3 starts getting a little convoluted in the mythology, but the action does not disappoint. Looking forward to 4 and the planned 5!

Honestly I think they went a bit too far building up the underworld, to the point where it felt like it wasn't an underworld at all and the entire population was a part of it. Don't get me wrong, I love the movies and the action, but it has parts where suspension of disbelief is stretched to the breaking point. Another point, along the same vein is that magical bulletproof jacket that turned the gritty, realistic combat of the 1st one into more of a fantasy with guns. The writers went out of their way to give him literal plot armor. 34 bad guys shooting at you? Just hold your jacket up in front of your face and you're invincible. Again I liked the movies, as pure action movies but if you try to dig deeper you really find holes in them with the later movies. First movie is great though, no real complaints with that one other than how someone with Wick's reputation wasn't known to his former boss's son. I think at one point he said he's been retired for something like 4 or 5 years. Where was the kid back then? That I think can be chalked up to the writers originally planning for Wick to be older and having been out of the game for much longer. Wow, didn't plan on making a full review here lol. Sorry for the semi-rant.

The reason Viggo Tarasov did not immediately kill John Wick is because he wanted to John to die slowly. Dumb move, yes, but he wanted revenge. I think one reason is because John had the temerity to actually challenge him and his organization. Just my 2 cents.

This movie does a great job of getting the audience on John's side and hating Iosef; it has witty and clever world building, and it has terrific fight choreography. However, it holds a special appeal to me because my martial arts background was in judo and wrestling (until I injure my ACL and switched to kenpo karate), and I know that being good in grappling requires developing fast twitch muscle fibers in muscle groups that normally consist primarily of slow twitch muscle fibers, and physiologically, that takes months of targeted training. Most actors don't train long enough to develop those fast twitch muscle fibers, so, even though they've learned the proper technique, when they throw somebody or wrestle on the ground, they tend to look kind of slow and cumbersome which makes for a boring movie fight. Keanu has done the necessary training, so the fights are fast and exciting.

Even dislocated it would have hurt. Also, John drew the knife into where he had already been wounded so it caused less damage and gave him control of the knife and the opportunity to injure Vigo. For the female version of John Wick, Kill Bill Vol's I and II are even more over the top extreme and violent but oodles of fun with a much better story and a female lead (The Bride) that I would argue would leave John Wick laying in her wake if he got in her way. She racks up more kills in one scene than Wick does this entire movie. That's pretty boss.

If you noticed when the officer came to John’s house once he saw the bodies he took his hat off saying that he’s not a cop at that moment. During the club scene when John is going after Iosef Keanu was sick with the flu running a temp of over 100 degrees. So when John looks exhausted Keanu didn’t have to act being tired. Also Keanu didn’t have to work hard to show being sad about his wife. All he had to do was think back to when his girlfriend was killed in a car accident just over a year after their child was still born. Nothing happened to the other car John was driving technically it wasn’t his it was Aurelio’s car. The Continental basically felt bad that John was attacked in his room when it’s supposed to be a safe haven and knowing his personal car was stolen they gave him a new one for the trouble.

Michael Nyqvist's play is great at this point (when he telling the story of John Wick). Listen carefully to that "Ow" when he finds out what his son has done. He already then understood the inevitability of retribution. The father who realized that he had ALREADY lost his son. It remains only to explain to his son why he will meet his death. To what you were talking about near the end, what seems to stick out in people's minds is his need to reload to a realistic degree for modern weapons when many movies might show reloading, but not to extent it would actually be necessary. While John Wick is a grounded style, I've seen people point to Equilibrium as inspiration for combining hand-to-hand with guns, but Equilibrium is significantly more stylized.

The gun fun/weapon style John Wick uses, while it definitely could be said that the movie Equilibrium is an inspiration, the more plausible inspiration could be from the style of weapon usage in the movies of Hong Kong director John Woo. He early movies in the 80s to the 90s showcased that style. Like Michelle said, John wick uses guns like how someone who use their hands, that is the exact style John Woo uses in his films dealing with gunplay. An earlier example of this is the movie Face/Off with John Travolta & Nicolas Cage, that John Woo directed.

The character John Wick is based on real life former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell whose story is told in the movie “Lone Survivor”. Marcus was given a service dog for his PTSD. A couple guys killed the dog and Marcus chased them until they were caught by the police.

That Mustang (1969) is kind of a rare jewel. It's like the Steve McQueen 'Bullitt' (1968) Mustang from probably the greatest movie car chase of all time. Ford Motor Company reissues a new green Bullitt Mustang every 10-year anniversary (the most recent being 2018, which happened to have Steve McQueens granddaughter advertising the car). So John Wick's 1969 Mustang is not just ANY car. That's why that young entitled SOB wants it so bad.

For Iosef, it's not just about wanting the car. It's about his ego. Deep down inside, he knows he's a loser that people only pretend to respect because of his father's power, so he can't bear it that John made him look weak and unimportant by daring to say "no" to him and made him look foolish by calling out Iosef's attempt to slyly insult John without getting caught by speaking in Russian. He feels the need to show John and his own flunkies that nobody gets away with standing up to him and that nobody gets away with embarrassing him. I was on a crowed bus, and a big guy was partially blocking the entrance, and so when a smaller guy got on, he brush against him as he moved toward the rear of the bus. The big guy asked "Do you know how to say 'Excuse me'?" When the smaller guy (whose back was to the big and may not have even though he was addressing him) didn't say anything, the big spun the smaller guy around, grabbed him by his collar, pulled him close to his face and screamed "DO YOU KNOW HOW TO SAY 'EXCUSE ME'?" The smaller guy's eye's went wide with fear, and he started speaking in a language I didn't recognize. I told the big guy "He doesn't speak English! He literally doesn't know how to say 'Excuse me'." The big guy glared at me and told me to mind my own business. Then he let smaller guy go and grumbled "Well, he should have said SOMETHING." He low key physically assaulted a guy for brushing up against him (in a bus where people were packed like sardines) and not saying "Excuse me" because he thought the smaller guy wasn't showing him respect. Peope with fucked up egos think everything is an insult, and they can't let it go.

Since you both enjoyed the "gun-fu" in this movie, I think you would like "Equilibrium" (2002) with it's stylized "gun-kata". It turns the gunplay into an almost balletic martial art and is rather amazing visually, and it has really yet to be equaled. Plus it's set in a dystopian future and stars Christian Bale and Sean Bean, so lots to like about it there as well. Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick films, wasn't involved in "Nobody" (2021), that was directed by Ilya Naishuller, who as did "Hardcore Henry" (2015) which is a totally unique "1st person perspective" action movie and well worth a watch. Stahelski, prior to directing, was a stuntman and was one of the late great Brandon Lee's stunt doubles on the ill-fated "The Crow" (1994). Overshadowed by the tragic events surrounding it, "The Crow" is well worth a watch if you haven't seen it. It had far more depth than most films of a similar type, and Brandon Lee gave an amazing performance.

John Wick is a :Gateway" movie for 2, 3 and (soon) 4. If you think the Fight Choreography is impressive, you should see the KZfaq video of Keanu Reeves at the Range. I Love that of the 70 kills, almost 60 John Finished with them with a Head Shot... It was an "Old School Assassination" Tactic. "2 to Center Mass, 1 to the head".
