Actually, it’s a wine tasting theme. The name sommelier is literally a wine specialist. Throughout the discussion with the armorer he’s using words like “bold” and “tasting” to describe trying out wines. The thing hanging around his neck is a tastevin, used by a sommelier for tasting and judging various wines.

I'm sure Kenau probably was keen for him after the script required a tailor. The odds are they'd be quite friendly, and this is a way of showing how much he likes his product. He probably just said act like he always does at a fitting.

One of my absolute favorite things about the John Wick movies is how polite everyone is to him. Like when he wasn’t actually carrying out assassinations, he was just a solid guy that made friends with just about everyone he met through the Table. You can tell the shopkeepers even treat him like one of their favorite customers.

John himself is always polite, respectful, and appreciative to everyone he meets in this sub-culture. He remembers everyone by name, from bodyguards to bartenders. He's also very knowledgeable and discriminating about their wares and services. And he never kills without cause, and shows mercy when he practically can. As cold-blooded mass murderers go, he's pretty classy.

What I love about the Sommalier scene is that, if you know your wines, it does follow typical tasting orders. Glocks = lighter wines like Pinot Noir "Robust. Precise." = Merlot or Zinfandel "Big. As an admitted firearms enthusiast, there were only a couple great options here. The German Walthers and HKs that John's used in the past are still remarkably capable despite their age, but the Long Slide Glock options currently offer better capacity, and aren't a compromise on durability. Despite the popular myths about their reliability, a reasonable AR15 is more robust than any AK known to man. As the money you spend on an AR increases, so to does the precision it's capable of delivering on target. A rack grade AR is 1-2MOA, but you can get sub MOA AR15s which is hard to beat. 5.56 doesn't mess around inside 200yards even out of an 11.5inch barrel. I highly doubt that they stock cheap rack grade AR15s at the Continental. The rest of the stock I can ID in the wine room are shotguns, 16-20in AR15/10s, and MP5s. The MP5 is a fine weapon, but it's still a pistol; and when you're expecting trouble you want a rifle. If it had been in stock, a P90 would have been an excellent choice as well.Terminal ballistics on 5.7FN are nuts, and a 50rnd magazine is :chefskiss: Something that I think people overlook about this, is that he's getting multiple weapons in case one of them gets damaged or destroyed, or isn't solving the problem. In an ideal world the AR15 would have solved everything. I'd have liked to see more AR15 mags stashed with the M4 in the cave fight before he transitioned to the Benelli. It's REALLY hard to beat the Stoner M16/AR15 design.

The gun sommelier, who really stole the scene, is Peter Serafinowicz, a British comedian. Directors like putting comedians in small, but important roles because they're able to bring a lot of life to a character even while given relatively little material to work with. Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul did it with Lavell Crawford and Bill Burr, but then went a step further by making a comedian one of its leads.

Well, when John first asks for him at the front desk, he calls him the "sommelier", which is a wine steward employed by very high end restaurants (and hotels). The language between the two of them is intentionally framed as if John were selecting what wines to serve with different courses at a fancy dinner. Same thing with talking to the tailor about formal/social, what time of day, etc, which are all real considerations when you're getting a high-end, bespoke suit.

Just before this scene, John asks Charon if the sommelier is in. A sommelier is someone whose whole job is to KNOW wines. They taste wines, learn the vintage, everything they can know about a wine, so they can recommend foods that pair well with it as well as help a customer find wines to fit their tastes. Notice John asks the sommelier for "a tasting." This man is a sommelier of weapons. John is merely following protocol. He takes his job very seriously, but also notice John's expression and how he says "a tasting." It's almost as if John doesn't care for the act of discussing weapons like someone would discuss wine, but John plays along. He uses this terminology because that's what the sommelier wants, and John obviously respects this man's recommendations. John is established as one of the best assassins in the world, if not THE best, yet he still asks the sommelier for his opinion when choosing weapons for this job. If John Wick is going to ask someone else to recommend a weapon, damn straight he's going to indulge the sommelier's eccentricities. You can even see the level of respect at the end when John asks for a recommendation for dessert. It's as if the sommelier doesn't get requests for knives much anymore, and is pleased that John would ask him for such a detail, when most assassins would probably be happy with any knife.

I just watched the movie last night for the first time (and #3) and I got that same vibe at that exact part! I thought I was just overthinking it and imagining it, seeing that you noticed it too is so cool- what an actor! Since your comment was cool I thought I would add something interesting about Keanu, My dad used to be a stuntman and he used to always joke about the time he was working on something and Keanu was there, and Keanu just wanted to be around the stuntmen and had so much respect for what they did like as if he wanted to do it himself, lmao my dad thought it was weird at the time because he said the room smelled like a bunch of sweaty stunt dudes and yet Keanu was there practically giddy with excitement, this happened in the 90s, and after watching these John wick movies I thought back to that story and saw it in a new light, he’s just a huge fan of cool stuff like that and now he gets to do it

The scene I laughed at was the description of the body armor. All soft body armor is quite painful to be shot in. Its designed to be like a catchers mitt, catches the bullet but the energy still needs to go somewhere and that place is into the soft tissue of your body, so no penetration but all the bruising.

One of my minor grips with John Wick 4 (which is still an excellent movie) is that they seem to forget entirely that the bullet proof suits don't make getting shot painless, they just ensure you'll survive. Everyone with one of them in John Wick 4 has little reaction to the shots deflecting off their suits.

They could do 2-3 more movies (prequel) starring Keanu. From his time in Ruska Roma up to his "impossible task" when he left everything behind for his wife. We'll get to see more Marcus, Aurelio, Winston, Sofia, Shimazu, Caine, etc. I expect the impossible task to be as intense as Chapter 4 since that's when he got his nickname Babayaga. Plus, it's a better sendoff for the franchise since it will end in a happy note with John and Helen finally together as a loving wife and a "loving husband".

Keanu is getting fairly old though, as much as we like to joke about him being an immortal vampire he is aging. I also don't thinkt he Impossible Task really needs to be shown, it works perfectly well as its almost mythical status left up to your imagination as a viewer. You risk the final product not living up to the picture you've built in your head of it. That said if they do show it, I think it'd be smart to have it as a gritty animated short series. Invincible and The Legend of Vox Machina are two recent examples of adult-aimed animated shows doing well. They could have Keanu still voice John for it. Or, hell, make it a video game. These movies are practically adaptations of the best action video games never made anyway
