John Williams would have been a wonderful music critic and an excellent music academic professor. He is so well spoken and articulate. His knowledge of music is limitless.

He is always very gentle in his word choices. You sense a supreme gentleman amid his words.

@@lukeskywalker6809 Because Jerry and John are very similar in many ways, John also did Seminars at USC and UCLA but he wasn't a tenured lecturer like Jerry or Elmer

I wish there was mention of North's wonderful score of Cleopatra.

God looked down on me and smiled when I just found this when I wasn't looking for it, as I didn't know it existed. I remember watching the movie Streetcar Named Desire for the first time as a young teenager, and the musical score hit me like a ton of bricks. It was so incredibly Sexy in a raw way, unlike any other score. I read the Tennessee Williams play after, and have nothing but praise for Vivien Leigh, Marlon Brando, etc. The play didn't become meaningless without that score or those actors. But this Alex North score was what ignited my interest in Jazz for the first time. Funny you should mention the story of Alex in Russia, hearing Duke Ellington and becoming homesick. I don't want to sound like Johnny One Note, but Duke Ellington is my favorite Jazz musician- because he composed the sexiest Jazz music ever. I never knew before seeing this that Alex admired Duke. I did manage to get a CD of North's Streetcar music, paired with small sections of Max Steiner. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for whoever posted this!

Genius speaking about genius ! John Williams should make a TV series explaining his perspectives on other composers and styles of music... That would surely be enticing ! :-)

I fully agree. J T W would be the perfect TV host.

I read that North spent time in Russia in the 1930's. Russia needed engineers and artists and North went as telegraphic engineer, but was about to be sent home when the Russian's discovered he was a composer. He spent another two years there. His parents were from Odessa.

Russian's is in the possessive case. Drop the ' and your spelling will be correct.

John could have mentioned that Alex studied with Aaron Copland for some time, which makes sense once you listen to his modal brass scoring?

Alex also studied with the great Mexican composer, Silvestre Revueltas, whose "Sensemaya" would have influenced his rhymic patterns in "Viva, Zapata".

@spacepatrolman Robert Weinrebe is one person and, sadly, appears to have passed away. It appears, in my own opinion, easier to follow John William's conducting pattern in recording session videos versus his concert conducting - not sure why that is.

Spartacus should be recorded in it's entirety, unfortunately the one man who could have done it the way it should be done, has died. Jerry Goldsmith

Mr. Williams, today the guy on the street doesn't even know a living composer... except you. I guarantee you they don't know Max Steiner.

“The guy on the street” doesn’t know anything. What J.W. says is only for selected few, who would watch such video as this one on KZfaq. The selected 0.001 percent of the World’s population... Sad, but true.
