John Williams returns to the Gothic Palace to play one of the most celebrated virtuoso compositions for guitar: Asturias from Suite Española by Albeniz, a musical impression of the region on the northern coast of Spain. The Halls of Carlos V, as they are known today, were first remodeled in the thirteenth century and have had a connection with all Spanish monarchs to the present time. The royal family maintains the tradition by retaining a suite of private apartments in the Alcazar for use during their visits to Seville.
Did you know that world-famous guitarist John Williams and filmmaker Christopher Nupen studied classical guitar together and that Andrés Segovia was their teacher? Discover more in this documentary by Christopher Nupen about his colleague and friend on @allegrofilms : • John Williams at Ronni...

It's not perfection.. The right hand is poorly played. It is the wrist that must move. Pianists have recognized a good adaptation to the guitar because of the wrist technique. Here, this technique is absent. Which is a major fault in this theme.

I know it sounds silly, but I truly believe that Albeniz wrote this for John Williams to interpret it many, many years after. It is my hope that this version will be played in my funeral and I'm no even been born in Spain. Greetings from Toronto.

Albeniz's original is for piano solo. It's challenging, but manageable with two hands. I agree with you in that John Williams was born to play this on the guitar however. The phrasing, the variety of colours, the technical perfection are unmatched! And it's one of the recordings I remember from my earliest childhood. Made an impact then, remains as impactful as ever decades later.

As a fellow Melburnian, I have nothing by praise for John Williams. He is my inspiration. John Williams performed this piece many times, on many different guitars. Here he is playing a different classical guitar design, by Smallman, which has a very fast reacting top. I think it suits his idea of classical performing. He is using it to play in the impeccable higher tempo with less effort. It's not everyone's style, taste, or ability, but he makes it sound impressive and he is the best in that type of faster tempi adaptations. He is so precise, that you can tune your metronome using his playing. He also changed some fingering and some chords, so that he doesn't need to slide over 6-7 frets in a fast-paced tempo and destroy cohesion of the movement. In the middle section of the piece, too, he makes the theme feel more like a dance, etc. so he understands the subtleties of each part and delivers them cohesively. John thinks in terms of different themes within the same piece, and he audibly adjusts the mood in each, then transitions between them impeccably, as in best storytelling. It is not easy to play an impeccable tone, impeccable higher tempo, deliver all those nuances etc.

He is hardly Australian - spent a short amount of time in Australia after he was born to English dad and then moves to England. More English than Australian but he likes to pretend he’s an Australian.

@@qwargy Born in Melbourne, Australia, 1941. That makes him Australian. He moved with his family to London in 1952, when he was 11. He’s been back many times. I was born in Perth, 1966. Moved to the US in 1986, at 20. I still have my accent, my Aus citizenship. I still consider myself 100% Australian, perhaps John does too. PS. Enjoy the music.
