strong flow ! I Never saw a slower flow on a salmon river . As for martin , he,s just a well meaning kid who doesn't understand why these areas are still in such beauty . Its the fishermen that keep the places nice martin , your having a go at the people that have kept places nice , rather than industry whom have devoid systems of all life

Apparently, off camera John Wilson was a rather grumpy, cantankerous, arrogant man. Enjoyable programs though.

I remember rushing home on a Sunday to catch the latest episode of go fishing on channel 4 as a youngster, about 9 or 10 yrs old. Absolute legend. Showed us fish from all over the UK and the world. Did abit of everything and always made a great show that you were gutted when it ended and you had to wait another week for the next one. The guy was ahead of his time too for the uk, using baitcasters decades before they became fashionable .

He was a true legend of his time!!! It always strikes me how light the tackle is that the older fishermen used in the past!! My grandfather was a great all round fisherman like John here and I don't think I ever saw him use more than 8lb line in freshwater weather it was for pike ,carp or salmon!!! Amazing really but they didn't have the state of the art gear we have now but they were true masters of the sport they really was!! Probably a golden era of fishing really, they had some quite bad chemicals that leaches into the water back then but it seems that they had a lot more water flowing through unlike today were so very much water is taken from the river all the way up and down the whole system which obviously means any little pollution makes a huge difference sadly!! It's shocking that we have banned so many toxic chemicals and pollution but there's less fish now than then!! It really does not make sense in this day and age but it's the amount of people living now I think. We take so much water and modern farming methods on top along with sewage treatment plants with there overflows that just lately have been allowed to dump their overflow into the Rivers is really pushing our fish ,wildlife and fisheries/rivers to breaking point! I never thought I'd be someone who goes on about the environment but it's really getting bad and I'd hate to see it all disappear!!!

Wonderfully nostalgic to watch JW again 30-odd years on. The only downside is seeing the way the fish are handled - dry hands and kept out of the water far too long. At least it’s good to know that we’ve come a long way in this regard. Most anglers these days try minimal contact, use unhooking mats and keep the fish wet and keep them out of the water as short a time as possible. Nothing against John - he was a great ambassador.

It’s in Southern England, called a “chalk steam” because of the extremely rich alkaline water caused by the sedimentary rock in the area. John fished largely catch and release for pleasure but Grayling from such clean water are as nice to eat as trout which live in the same unpolluted waters. Sadly John left the U.K. to retire in Thailand because such natural fishing has been destroyed in recent years by an over population of Otters purposely bred and released by “ naturalists” more concerned with Otter numbers than the fish and other wildlife they feed on. Sadly too because he passed away without being able to enjoy such U.K. fishing in his retirement. But he is a much loved angler and very skilled in working a flowing river.

Why did his cut down knee flap waders never catch on? You can’t walk easily far in full sized waders. Noticeably here he mentioned Otters with no senses of alarm or danger at all. Why? Because before their numbers were hugely bolstered to cause a huge imbalance in the predator/ prey balance there was no reason to fear their destruction of overall national fish stocks. Anglers don’t hate Otters per se, only after long term breed and release programmes, the building of Otter Holts and artificial increase of their numbers through human interference did they become a hugely destructive pest.

I used to fish the Waveney and it was noticeable how the Earsham otter farm had caused such an impact on the fish stocks. Used to have this conversation with John many times.
