For information: I bought a very high quality mattress a few years ago, along with an even more expensive memory foam top mattress, to get some really good sleep. I was never really happy with it, till I replaced the bedframe with a higher quality product, with bended oak bed springs. It completely transformed the bed, even though they're a foot and a half below the top of the bed. What I'm saying is: Those 2 x 4 supporting the mattress aren't doing you any favors. I'm old military and I can sleep anywhere, but for truly excellent sleep, the springs are important.

No box spring? They exist for a reason. You're wasting a lot of lumber, and making this a lot more complicated than it needs to be. Turn the cross members on edge like the outside. Not only will it make it several times stronger, you can space them farther apart. Put in bridging on the ends and your mattress wont sag at all. I'd also put the legs on the corners, it will make it a lot more stable. A single post in the middle will eliminate any sagging.

Gaps definitely not too wide. I built a bedframe with 2.5in gaps that only has a 3in latex foam mattress on top. Orientation matters though, going horizontally/width-wise. Only noticeable when I lean on my elbows to get up or turn over.

Only modification I would suggest is to take it apart, and seal every surface of the timber, even where timber meets timber, with a good oil based sealer. One day, you will go to flip your mattress, and the timber it was touching will be green and black, and you will have to dispose of it. At least sealed, the moulds will not get into the timber.

Like very much the temporay foundation, very nice craftmanship...although you should check with the mattress manufacturer what kind of foundation the mattress requires. Most recent mattresses require a solid foundation, as a slat foundation will not provide adequate support and will even damage the mattress. You can easily modify your slat foundation to a solid one, by adding mdf sheets or similar on top of the slats. If ventilation is an issue, you can also drill small holes on the mdf sheets.
