@lukaf2393 Very well said. I'd pay to see the trio version in concert, as they were a solid pop group until the end. I'd pay and buy a T-shirt for the quartet, because they were a VERY good prog band. I'd give a kidney (preferably someone else's) to watch the Classic 5. 4 years together. 4 incredible records. There's tons of prog interviews out there now. Tony does a long one with his cherry red record label. Steve is ALWAYS doing interviews and about this time. Peter has done some long form ones for various organizations. Ironically Mike does the least, mostly beause he at least was still performing so is just doing the really crappy mainstream media interviews where they ask the same idiotic questions, but he did one with that podcast that that guy from status quo did during the lockdown.

My greatest appreciation for Genesis, who has shaped my whole life, as a faithful companion in so many beautiful and difficult life situations. Especially Phil, who gave me the “spark” to start playing drums at the age of 14. My first album was Nursery Crime in 1971, but the album I listen to the most to this day is probably Seconds Out Live, which I bought in 1977. So, once again, my biggest thanks for music that is definitely timeless and contains more than one MASTERPIECE! 🎼🎵🎶🎹 🎸🥁❤💖

I've seen so many interviews with Peter over the years, and I don't think I've ever seen him break into spontaneous, broad smile laughs. Great to see him happy. Tony's comment, "you're 30 years too late" to Steve was offhand and nasty, and probably speaks to his character.

@@aleclewis9123 Interesting . I`ve always been annoyed at Tony`s attitude towards Steve, even if I think the world of him as a keyboardist and a song writer, but to see them both hug at the beginning of this video was a very pleasant surprise. It`s nice to see that they`re not cold to each other.

@aleclewis9123 3 күн бұрын
@@paulcarfantan6688 Despite the disagreements within the band, they really do get along, e.g. Tony went to Steve's 53rd birthday party in 2003. Both of them were even close to re-recording the song The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway for Steve's first Genesis Revisited album. Phil says about Tony and Mike in his autobiography, "Tony and Mike have become more lovable as time goes on, which is the reverse of the traditional rock-band narrative. Tony, formerly rather diffident and difficult to talk to, has become a great friend, funny and witty. He’s a different person, especially with a glass of wine in him. Mike, too, has loosened up." You must remember, Mike, Peter and Tony had stern educational upbringings and Phil came from a drama school, where education was minimal. Steve was also close to leaving the band during the Foxtrot sessions, but Tony and Mike gently sat him down and encouragingly said "we don't want you to leave".

@paulcarfantan6688 3 күн бұрын
@@aleclewis9123 Very interesting. Re-recording The Lamb would have been something curious to listen to, a bit like their 1999 re-recording of the The Carpet Crawlers. Indeed Tony has mellowed with age which is a good thing and yes that Charterhouse schooling instilled in them a "stiff upper lip" attitude. I remember the three of them saying they were envious of ho Phil could easily joke around and hug someone, since that`s not how you would behave at their school. The last part about Steve is intriguing since I`ve read about eight books in the last 43 years and never heard about him wanting to leave at that time. Good thing they convinced him otherwise, I mean what a guitarist that guy is, such an innovator in multiple guitar sounds. He`s one third of my "Steve trio" of guitarists, along with Howe and Rothery. Cheers.

But every time the camera pulled back to reveal ALL FIVE OF THEM sitting side by side I did a little invisible leap of joy, haha. Fantastic interview! Well done focussing on the creative side--how songs came to be written, how the sound & visual aspects came together etc--rather than typical 'band stories/road to success'. And wow the band dynamics came out immediately, tho obviously passions have mellowed & they're more philosophical about their conflicts now. So much of what you post is...to call it priceless isn't an exaggeration. Thank you so much for sharing your work here.

It's possible that Pete and Phil had already done their initial "hug" greeting, off camera and just prior to this bit of filming and were both reluctant to replicate it "just for show".....I mean....I wouldn't do that either if that was the case. So their look of "awkwardness" may just be a mutual "we've already hugged".....and "so long as WE know this, sod what it might look like on the edit"......type thing.

John, something I have wondered watching all of these (which are great, thank you so much for posting the full versions!) ... did you give much thought to the seating arrangement? It seems perfectly thought-out, with Tony and Peter together (because that is the most important relationship and the one that has never resolved), Steve to the side because he's a quiet guy and would cause a hole if placed in the middle, Phil on the other side because he has the energy and can bridge the love gap all the way over to Peter and Steve... etc. Or was it kind of spontaneous?

@mikearchibald744
@mikearchibald744 Ай бұрын
@@CommuneRecords I agree with another comment, it looks like most of the friction is Peter and Phil. They look at each other to hug like everybody else, then look away, then Peter looks at Phil again to see what he's going to do, and they are the only ones that dont hug. I'm not exactly sure though what people think needs to be 'resolved'. One thing about getting old is you realize for the most part just how dumb you were when young and most of the things you did you likely can't really explain. Tony pretty much admits here he was an asshat, he's said that before, and from all accounts from people aroudn the group he's mellowed more than most. Its got to be a little bit of a hit to pride that his solo career wasn't as successful, he and the others keep talking about it, which is odd because popularity has never equalled quality. Peters most successful albums are most certainly his least interesting ones. Phil did far better work with Brand X than his solo albums. All over youtube you see fans and critics and other members of Genesis saying how brilliant an album Smallcreeps day is, yet Mike hardly even acknowledges it. But on rewatching this they do all seem very nervous before starting, and of course we still notice there is SOME editing done here. Granted, I critique it like a performance because I don't know any other way. I'm not about to do as somebody else did and base criticisms on their posture.
@CommuneRecords
@CommuneRecords Ай бұрын
@@mikearchibald744 Odd because Phil and Peter have (seemingly) real respect for one another not just based on old times. It looks like Steve has come out as the hug-gy one and is hugging everybody. Phil is pretty hug-gy too and gets through to his old bandmates. But somehow the Peter-Phil thing is awkward for a moment, and then it's too late. I didn't notice any actual friction between Peter and Phil, just maybe an awkwardness. Interesting to dissect a few seconds! Totally agree with the rest of your comment (though I don't like Smallcreep's Day myself).
@mikearchibald744
@mikearchibald744 Ай бұрын
@@CommuneRecords To be honest I haven't listened to Small creeps day, but hear ALL the guys related to Genesis raving about it. But yeah, and stuff like that is hard to figure because its spur of the moment, you never know, they may have just had a conversation before and this meant nothing. As i've said before they dont have a LOT of drama, but even pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin have REUNITED. After 1983 thats never happened, and it looks like Pete has always been the holdout. I would think the main grief would be with Tony, but these british guys are pretty good with the stiff upper lip. The only other thing that gives me pause is the other Phil solo interview where Phil is talking about how he didn't waht Petes job and Phil says "Pete might say 'for fucks sake leave it alone' ". Pete is the guy who I really can't imagie getting angry, but he out and out admits how stubborn and cantakerous he can be, so we should believe him. But all those hugs seemed a little showy. I'm not a huggy person,but when I hug, people feel it:) Steve and Tony barely hug, but I think MOST of these realize just how long ago the past is. But on rewatching the beginning I'm struck with how nervous they all seem to be at the FIVE of them being there, when they don't when there is three. And I think thats all rehashing the Pete and Steve stories which likely like Pink Floyd says "we dealt with it by ignoring it..the british way". In hindsight what would be ideal is to see PAIRS of them in interviews on the albums.

True. There's something very wrong with Tony Banks. I imagine that there was a parent whacking his fingers with a stick when he got something wrong when he was a kid that never went away, I think the poor sod has had a tortured life as a result. Yes, it turned him into a genius, but a tortured one. I suspect we enjoyed him a lot more than he ever enjoyed himself. And Steve needs to sack up and speak up about his significant contribution. I guess his current tours are a result of his lack of confidence around the other members of the band, so we, as an audience, have that to thank that for, but maybe if he could be more comfortable with himself and the others, he might be able to match their complexions/tans rather than look like the kid to crawls up their chimneys.

So Phil replaced someone who they all thought was a substandard drummer and they seemed to have accepted Phil right away whereas Steve replaced someone who they looked up to and it seems that they never fully accepted him through no fault of his own.

We discussed that on another thread, hugs don't come easily to the british, thats the thing about upper and middle class brits, you can read almost anything into anything. Was there derision shown by somebody because of how they arched their eyebrow? When Peter gives his 'prog god' acceptance speech is there some truth behind the jokes because brits are always subtle? In short its kind of OUR problem that for some reason we want to think that everybody gets along, usually in ways WE never do. I wouldnt have lasted five minutes in that band, maybe in no band. The fact they are in the same room is an accomplishement. But for perspective, on Phils 'moodier' interview he talks about how he almost never sees steve, and is STILL coloured by how he left, probably in part because he never sees him. When Phil jokes that "Pete would probably say 'leave that the fuck alone' " thats a pretty glaring statement. As Peter gets older he plays Genesis songs LESS, if at all. Sting sang "Moonlit Knight" on their together tour. What do those things mean? Well, if you are really bored theres' enough psycho analogy in that room to last a lifetime. Human interpersonal relationships are complex for ONE meeting, let alone half a century of being in and around a band. What most dont like to think about is the fact that its fairly likely these guys think of one another as rarely as you or I do anybody from thrity years ago.Mike said it best about when somebody is out of hte band you lose that closeness, its like a divorce and everything is coloured by that. Ironically it was Phils leaving that ENDED the band, and yet Mike and Tony seem to still have the fewest problems with him, maybe just because of his personality. As they say, 'oh those sensitive artist types'. But who knows, he didnt seem frosty to him at all during the interview.
