Nice to hear these thoughts John. Regarding the USB input, as much I get Chord want to keep things compatible; they have plenty of brilliant engineers. Surely an adapter could have been made and sold for 15 or 20 pounds?

I've got a Mojo v.1 and can assure everyone that it's built quality is top notch! Yes, it does look somewhat whimsical and not everyone will like it, but to me it's a perfect hifi man jewelry/toy:) - every time I hold it in my hand I feel like a child playing with his favourite toy:) And I won't even get into its sound quality... Chord PLEASE DON'T CHANGE YOUR DESIGN LANGUAGE - it's truly unique and we need more of this type of creative approach in HIFI!

Your latest reviews about the Mojo 2 helped me to take the decision of purchasing one. I bought it during the Black Friday for only € 479 euros including shipping + the leather case. At this price, and even I'd say up to 1K, this DAC has an outstanding performance and has no direct competitor that offers portability + desktop dac with this quality of sound. It's really impressive. I agree the micro-usb is outdated, but not a big issue for me, since I connect it mainly thru usb-c. The main issue I found about it is to remember the colours, menus, etc. I have the manual opened in the background since otherwise is really difficult to understand what are you doing. In overall, a great purchase! Thanks John for your reviews or comments.

Hi John, I really appreciate the time you take to make the videos. I have to admit that when I saw a Chord product it was hard to see the cost equal to what you would get. I bought a Chord Qutest in the Spring 2022, and I have to saw it felt incredibly solid. When I played the first track I thought, wow this is doing something I haven't heard before. I used it for about 8 months and sold it only because I wanted a all in one solution and got a RME ADI 2 Pro FSR. I had a setup up with the Qutest and Schiit Asgard and Lokius for headphone/monitor(iLoud MTM) listening. I still find myself missing the Chord sound and may go with a Mojo 2 since I could bring it out and use it mobile. Thanks again for the great videos. Take care.

Kudos John! Presentations like this take a lot of cognitive and emotional energy out of the creator and demonstrate your commitment to keeping these conversations meaningful. Spicy take to add to the conversation. Significant deviations from the norm should always be a matter of; does it improve cost, performance, user usability, experience, and inclusiveness, which in the case of the Chord's hardware interface, it does not. It is just a misguided attempt at differentiation at the expense of the visually impaired, colorblind, disabled, technically nascent, and those whose cognitive demands of their lives don't have room for the needlessly complex. Chord deserves all the praise for their accomplishments on sonics, but their interface is pure hubris and should not be addressed as a matter of taste, as too many reviewers often do.

I've been happily using the first Mojo as my primary desktop headphone DAC/amp after first hearing about it on your youtube channel a couple of years ago. These days, I mostly use it with a pair of Beyerdynamic T5p closed headphones I think it sounds really good. I don't buy audio products because of their looks, but I was delighted to discover that the Mojo looks much better "in person" than in photos. It is a strangely hard to photograph product. When you see it online it tend to look like a brick of black play doh with some pastel marbles stuck to it, so I can understand people questioning its build quality. I keep mine in a small metal soap cup screwed to my desk and it looks pretty cool. And it takes up no room at all on my cluttered desk. I don't use it as a mobile device, and I have probably run down its battery life quite a bit by keeping it connected to a power source at all times, but that's ok. I was really happy to hear there is now a Mojo 2 that fixes that issue though, and I'll definitely look into getting one when it's time for me to upgrade my admittedly very modest system. Thanks for all your fine work on this great channel!

John-- Thank you, thank you, thank you. I admire your restraint. I've been a Mojo owner since 2016. A Poly owner since 2017. I bought a Mojo 2 during a trip to the UK this past Spring. These are simply first-class devices with performance well above their price points. For those who question the build quality of the Mojo and the Poly, the simple fact is obvious, they've not held either in their hands and so they are opining out of ignorance in the sense you take pains to clarify. That is true. But, the fact that they believe their opinions merit posting a comment, is ignorant in the pejorative sense. That too is true. Keep up your excellent work John.

Couldn't agree more that this DAC is superb sounding and has no competition regarding versatility. Currently using as a desktop dac / pre, with one output feeding the power amp, the other feeding the sub...works beautifully. A very versatile product indeed, with wonderful sonics. Thanks for the review John, super happy having bought one off the back of your work.

I use my Mojo 1 as DAC in my HiFi system. I opened the casing and disconnected the battery, and now power it by a Shanti Linear power supply, which actually made an audible significant improvement. Works like a charm, sounds very, very good. Of course I am curious of how big an improvement the Mojo 2 would yield.....

A patient, considerate response video. I remember when you bailed on having a comments section and I was pleased to see its return. Now you’ve seemed to try a new take with these coming-back-around response or second-take videos which are gracious. I take a little issue with defining your work as info-tainment. It’s really so much more than that. It is entertaining to be sure and you make it look so easy (the surest sign that it’s not), but I think of it as more akin to having a great friend who is an expert at something. You’d like them anyway because they are cool but happen to be lucky enough that they know a lot about something you do not. I trust you so much that I return to the Roon videos every few months to try and figure out why I’m not into it. That’s influence, not just entertainment. I was happy and surprised to see you do another Mojo 2 video. It’s always in the back of my mind…like the Roon I know I’m going to eventually pull the trigger and find that I really did need this all along.

To quote American radio "Long time listener, first time caller". Why am I responding? Primarily on the strength of your (OG) Mojo video. Yours was among several I watched and I purchased it and loved it. I'm stunned that people would comment on its value based on not listening to it or touching it? Its not using an off the shelf DAC chip etc and in its market its versatility is unmatched (I can't take my Qutest on a flight). People are entitled to their opinions, its just sad when they're negative based on zero handling of the product (Its a plastic box! its way too expensive!). Keep up the great work and I look forward to getting the Mojo 2. I understand its a bit better at switching between multiple sources vs the OG Mojo.

Responding to the "build quality" and "price" points (yet to hear your response John - had to pause the video and respond 🙂). The Mojo 2 feels quite hefty in hand and the finish is quite nice as well. Coming to price - I've owned (some sold, some remain with me) a number of $150-$250+ DACs from Topping, SMSL, iFi, Soncoz/Khadas, AudioQuest, Schiit, Cayin - the difference in sound is night and day. I hesitated before purchasing the Mojo 2 because of the price; I was contemplating spending on a power amp + speaker upgrade - I'm so, so glad I purchased the Mojo 2 instead - I saved a ton on those planned upgrades. Completely changed the sound of my set up. It is worth every penny.

I appreciate this follow-through Mojo 2 video. I was one of the complainers of the Micro-USB ports in the original video's comments, though I was not singled out. :) I offered valid experience as to why I detest the existence of this failure-prone port as I also do not like ignorant throw-away comments. Anyway, thank you for showing how the Mojo 2 connects to the legacy Poly - it explains a lot. I'm sure this DAC sounds awesome, I just think in my usage where I'm often charging my portable DAC/amp during use, I know that Micro-USB port will be a disappointment for me, hence this otherwise fine product being omitted from my shopping list. Cheers!

There are tiny Micro-USB to USB-C adaptors available for just a few euros on Aliexpress. Micro-USB is no biggie. Micro-USB has a throughput of up to 480Mbs. Even Tidal only uses 18.43 Mbps. If you don't need the data throughput then whats the problem?

Good insights and nice review of comments. I think your section on 'ignorance' also ties back nicely to your last video with your opening question about why people won't read the description box or check the links for more info. I think they go hand in hand in a way. People think it is easier to blast out the question for someone to answer for them than it is to expand the video description and research for themselves. It's a weird situation but seems common these days.

I feel similarly about the comments on build quality. I personally haven't been in a room with a Mojo, and based purely on videos and images I would have also made similar assumptions about it's solidity if I believed the case to be plastic. Especially with a product like this, I think reviewers need to highlight build quality and materials as part of the review, not assuming the viewers will intuit it. A lesson on assumptions all around.

Hello John. I have It and its amazing. I still have the project dac box and mojo 2 its way better in all the aspects. Possibly a little screen would be great or a 6.3 Jack socket, but the most important thing, the sound, is just great! Linear, not fatiguing, smooth and the bass line perfectly accurate. The color combinations are perfectly fine after using the mojo. It’s a bit of a learning curve but don’t let that dissuade you from purchasing this amazing product. It becomes second nature after a short while. Also, if you are mentioning the Mojo 2 why not discuss the poly that in my opinion really takes the mojo 2 to another level. No need to Velcro the mojo 2 to the back of your iPhone. Untether your phone! Please do a review of the poly. Some have said the sound quality coming from the mojo2/poly combo is better than a direct connection. Cheers

I have the Mojo 2 for about 3 days now and I really like how it sound. It's very clean, no distortion and I hear no hiss.I really like that it has eq and crossover controls that I can fiddle any time plus, not many dac amp have them. It is also small for its many functions. it runs very warm though and I think the only thing I don't like about the unit.

I got mojo 2 recenlty. Sounds great. But there is a big but: my unit leaks current into chassis when connected to the charger (tried few chargers and few cables and few different wall sockets). Charging battery to 100% seem to be taking way to long. For example I am keeping mojo 2 plugged in all day and most of the day battery indicator is flashing blue (it does it for hours) instead switching to magenta indicating desktop mode and fully charged battery. There is no official information how long it takes to charge mojo 2. I've checked all manuals for mojo 2, including Moon's manual, Chord's v1.1 and v1.2 manual. This is a basic information that people could reffer to so they can determine if long charging times are something normal and expected or this rather an indicator that the unit might be faulty. I think I will be returning my unit because of all the above. I will then get replacement unit for comparison. I believe my criticism is fully justified here rather than out of ignorance. I did my research.

Another thoughtful vid, love Chord, especially the Qutest which is great value, what impressed me most from the beginning is that they design their own chips instead of buying off the shelf and modifying the heck out of them as others do.They certainly have good ears. I didn’t bother commenting on the last video. I do have the mojo and poly, I basically got sick of faulty Micro USB B connectors on expensive cables and decided to rule out the connection by adding the poly. A great combination, I mostly use glider to play files on the microSD card. I have had libraries on the sd card fail a few times, but fortunately they are backed up elsewhere. I’d probably consider a Hugo2 rather than the mojo 2. It would have been nice to have a quick Poly and mojo2 review, but understand why that was left out.

I was intrigued by an off the cuff comment I nearly missed. People have hooked their Mojo's up to speakers directly. I ordered a cable yesterday and tried it today. I have a pair of Monitor Audio radius 270 (87db). I really wasn't expecting it to work ... but it did. I am currently using a 20 year old Yamaha AV receiver, which is ok. Attaching the speakers directly to the Mojo 2 seemed to give superior clarity and separation, at fairly decent listening levels. I’m not quite sure what to make of this result, it feels wrong that a usb powered device can drive my speakers. I don’t think people should necessarily target this as a solution, and I also can’t speak to the demand I places on the Mojo 2 itself, but it does work, and there is some sonic improvement (for me and my amp).

Hi John. Love your videos and agree with your comments about comments. One thing you pointed out in this video is that your channel has audiophiles and the Sonos/Apple people. I’d like to think these are not mutually exclusive and I think your feelings of the AirPods or some of the big over ear headphones proves that, each has their place. I have to balance my audiophile tendencies with the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). Most people have to balance ultimate performance with aesthetics etc. so everyone is happy. I’d love to see you talk more about these compromises. I bought a pair of JBL L100 Classics (based on your and other reviews) because they are a great sounding speaker but also fit with the mid century vibe of my house furnishings but also deliver for my wife’s love of classic rock and my love of electronic music. However I run them through an NAD amp connected to my whole home Sonos system for convenience. I’d love to see you do a video on how to achieve great sound with these compromises

Very enlightening video as usual. I had been concerned myself about the Mojo quality as it did look quite small and cheap from the viewpoint of my laptop. But, as the Mojo was getting rave reviews from many reviewers (and I trust Darko's opinions), I knew there must be more to it than what I thought I saw. I'm glad you explained the construction of it though. To be fair to the less hostile comments on its quality, it did look like it was a cheap small plastic box.

Love the content John, keep up the great work 🤘 currently looking for good balanced DAC to pair with my new Rotel power amp and Polk R700’s. I’m running an SMSL DO200 currently, but it isn’t as musical as I would like. Feels like it takes some of the warmth from the amp and speakers.

If can I combine the bass, speed and slam of the mojo 1 with the organic natural sound of the mojo 2, for me this will be an outstanding performer.

Love this. Videos like this help the community because tending to the garden of opinions sorts through the weeds and creates no a clear picture of your take. I think My only gripe is I do appreciate the more nerdy technical stuff, like the explanation of how the shelf eq works. I think my mojo 1 sounds very different depending on the sample rate it’s sees. Possibly due to the predetermined filter Chord chose per each sample rate, however something like that greatly effects my enjoyment of the device. Especially since many iOS player apps can’t let you alter the sample rate. Anyway, I think people who come to this channel for lifestyle audio advice will stick through a little nerdy tech talk. Even if they just tune it out for a few seconds. Keep feeding them the polished “B” roll and you’ve got them in your pocket.

Solid defence there John, I felt exactly the same about most of the comments you highlighted here, it’s like these people didn’t actually watch or listen to the video. Great analogy with your Dad, I recognise that too…

I had two of the old Chord Mojos where the USB socket fell inside the unit, making them unusable :( Hope this new model is more robust.

Nice responses. And I like the looks and build quality (having handled it). And as far as I can tell you can't get the audio quality in this tough device at this price elsewhere (mojo 1 perhaps). I’m considering updating my portable hi-fi I’m wondering what the best approach might be. I listen to a wide range of music, including Apple lossless and lots of wav uncompressed music (1411kbps). I like depth detail and musicality. I listen to most genres especially classical, female vocals and music that makes me want to move. I listen mostly using Sennheiser ie600 IEMs which are detailed and the HiFiMan Edition XS which are spacious and comfortable. My main source is an Astell and Kearn SE180. I’m considering the chord mojo 2 or possibly Cayin RU7. Amy thoughts for how to get detailed spacious engaging delicious and entrancing music experiences appreciated! (Including whether a dac is even worth getting as I have the A&K se180). (Not sure what setting you have on your iOS devices but I don’t get asked to update Apple Pay settings after iOS updates!).

Such a subtle assassination of the build cost complainers. Yeah, contact the folks at Chord and explain how they can reduce their costs by 80%. Something tells me this discourse never happened. Whiners gonna whine. Excellent video as usual. Thank you.

This is called different strokes for different folks. I personally love Chord products. From 2qute to Qutest and Anni. I love their form factor especially and of course their FPGA dacs. Chord Mojo2 is absolutely brilliant dac/amp no question. Thank you for your great review!

Bravo, John. You picked your way through that minefield of commentary with aplomb. FWIW, I flirted with a Mojo last year and ended up buying a Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital instead. LOVED the sound/ design/ build quality of the Mojo but in the end went for something nearly as good (to these unsophisticated ears) that was cheaper and didn't require recharging. If I needed a mobile DAC though, it would've been a no-brainer.

Many thanks John! Really comprenhensive and interesting video about facts, opinions, and beliefs on the Mojo 2 that can be easily extended to any or all high end products. In Spain we laugh and make jokes about the "brother-in-law effect": non-educated, ignorant opinions about unknown "almost everything", it is so easy and cheap. By the way, somehow inclined by your videos, I have been enjoying a Mojo 2 for about 8 months now, it's quite impressive, especially when compared with the TT2/M-Scaller combo at +10X price. I'm so convinced that a new Poly is on the way! Regards

Great video. Love the concept of revisiting your video through constructive comments. Still think the iFi audio Gryphon is a more complete package: better ergonomics, great sound, powerful, and can be used wired and wireless, compatible with all codecs. Adding Poly makes this a very expensive and less portable solution.

I have both Mojo+Poly and Gryphon… sound wise, they are different characters…. and I can’t say which one is better…. Mojo though, is way more powerful than Mojo for headphones.

🤣🤣 I actually moved in a flat that has wooden walls, floor and roof in the living room area. Sound quality is so good compared too hard surfaces. Im using the Fiio BTA30 Pro as a middleman between my soundbar and AV 4.2 channel system. Unfortunately my choices are limited in South Africa. I also use the Fiio BTR 5 2021 for MQA as a wired and wireless portable solution. Im happy with both devices. Thank you for another great video.

One method of attaching a DAC to my phone I tend to like is with poster putty / blue tack. A firm push and a twist with enough force and it suddenly feels like it’s all one unit. I’ve felt that Velcro feels a little wobbly and dual lock Velcro solves this but is a bit thick and has sharp corners. I first figured this out when dash mounting my iPod. I always love watching your videos because as a college kid I cannot afford most of these products but it allows access to the neat technology implementations of different companies as well as things like streaming quirks and music suggestions. My Dad is a fan of The The and I just got the Mind Bomb CD release you’ve mentioned a couple times for him for Christmas.

Thank you again for a great review follow up. I am surprised so many Chord haters out there. Chord has always had a quirky design, it’s their design philosophy. However, their engineering and components are world class. I have a Chord TT2 paired with a Chord Mscaler. This combo is not cheap but in my opinion sounds great for the cost. I have compared to similarly priced DAC’S. You made a great point about the cost of materials and labor to manufacturing. Keep up the great infotainment!

Mojo 2 is arguably the best DAP you could buy for a thousand dollars. I would prefer using Mojo with whatever phone I'm using every year, rather than buying an expensive DAP - DAPs have a similar lifecycle of a smartphone - their screens wear out, their OS becomes old and obsolete, and eventually they become too old. Mojo's design is timeless - and it will most likely outlive most smartphones and DAPs.
