Darko, this Video is the most useful subwoofer review I have seen so far. It gave me a lot of information I need to investigate further. And you need to investigate adding a second subwoofer at a well placed location. All AV specialists tell us you have no chance to get good bass for more than one person sitting at just the right spot with just one subwoofer. I decided I really need subwoofers a few months back and have been reading and viewing a lot of videos since. Probably the Audioholics channel and Website has the best information. More later when I have a proper keyboard.

Darko, just wait till you run High Level (speaker wire) from Hegel to In on Sub then High Level out from sub to speakers. Now the whole system will have the sound signature of the Hegel. Set Speakers to play down to 70Hz and Sub up to 80Hz (or 60Hz/70Hz..). 10 Hz overlap typically best. Can’t wait to hear what you think.
@mag290
@mag290 3 жыл бұрын
In the video, looks like you had the speakers setup to around 70Hz and Sub set to 45Hz. If so, missing all the info between 70Hz and 45Hz. see comment above, should sound better. Same goes for App, if setting High Pass (speakers) to 70 Hz, set Low Pass (sub) to 80Hz. tweak from there but most of the time 10Hz overlap is best.

A lot of two channel audiophiles discount the importance of adding hi-pass filtering to their main speakers, all too often to the detriment of their system. I'm a big believer in hi-pass filtering of the main speakers for proper sub integration, and this video did a really good job of explaining why that matters. Well done.

John, interesting to see your honest and enthusiastic reaction because you're an audiophile who hadn't experienced subs before. There are audiophiles out there who don't "believe" in subwoofers. Never understood it. Luckily you're a young guy and now have years ahead of you to re-enjoy music you already love, and new music coming your way.
@Drinkyoghurt
@Drinkyoghurt Жыл бұрын
I legit can't understand how someone can call themselves an audiophile without "believing" in subwoofers. It makes everything come alive, even just someone talking. It really transforms speakers from something that play to you to something that actually immerse you. There are some songs that give me the chills when the sub comes in like Creature, Pt. 1 by DjRUM. People always talk about monitors like they're the end all be all, but I found that the one thing that could transform an "OK" system into an amazing one was one, or better yet two good subs that are set up properly and blend in with your speakers. I think their bad rap comes from hearing people who don't properly set up their subwoofers and just create a boomy and muddy mess that overwhelms everything else, whereas with a proper subwoofer, set up to the correct levels you won't even notice there is one until you turn it off.

I had a similar experience with my lowly KEF LS50 I and a lowly Yamaha S2000 integrated, and a lowly cheap Pioneer Sub designed by Andrew Jones. It is a pain in the butt to dial in the sub, but once it is dialed in, I can never go back to just the speakers. Now I'm running 3 subs in the room, only draw back is, if I make some change to the system, I need to fine tune the 3 subs all over again, but to me, the reward is worth the effort. Thanks John for this great review, it confirmed a lot of things I experienced with proper speaker sub and room coupling.

The improvement in midrange was noticeable using a processor/avreceiver as Xover spliting speakers/sub when someone convinced me to use a sub for music/hifi more than 10 years ago... it improves sound and leaves more power/dinamics to the speakers. Cracking review, 100% concur - Have got the KC62 with the original LS50W and the space and detail it allows the 50’s to go to is insane. Lends weight not only to the bass but also to the mids. Cannot go back to without. FYI I have mine in a open fronted cabinet and even still it’s unbelievable thump. Try T-Rex - Life’s a Gas and you will hear lows that didn’t exist before. Great review (as usual). Anyone who's spent time setting up high-end automotive audio has lived the (perceived) increased soundstage with high pass filtering. We don't perceive the directionality of low-end signals so when they're coming from a full range it adds to a strong center presentation. Remove the low end, and things open up!

Thanks John, for a great review. It’s so satisfying to finally hear a reviewer articulate the benefits of a high pass filter on the main speakers! Most of the other popular reviewers that I follow have drunk the REL Acoustics kool aid! One of them who I highly respect,even thought the idea of a high pass filter was too complicated! Can you believe it?! Here’s the thing that totally baffles me that you eluded to. So, so many of the options for high(er) end integrated amplifiers don’t have main amp inputs! Not your $5k Hegel amp! I find this *crazy*! Even the mid-fi manufacturer NAD used to have this as a standard feature on all their integrated amps, going back at least as far as the 3020; but not any more! Why on earth not? Why is this now the exception rather than the rule?? Thanks!

I still have a 20 odd year old REL Q150. Your explanation of how to tune it in is spot on. I'm surprised with this sub that they do not recommend using the speaker connections in parallel with your speakers as this means the sub is receiving the same signals as your speaker. REL have been doing this for years and it works wonderfully especially if you run it to underpin your main speakers and also yo supply the LFE for AV at the same time. Once you've heard a proper setup sub there is no going back I'm afraid.

Thanks for the video John. I've learnt a lot from your channel (I've even built a RP4 following your instructions and used an Allo DigiOne hat, which is great btw). I've actually ordered one of these KC62s - I can't wait to dial it in (so to speak) and experience it for myself. Cheers!

My KEF KC62 arrived this Tuesday. Today is Friday and I think I have it where I like it. Because of its small size, I did try it out centered between my KEF towers (1995 Reference 3) but after listening to it for a day or two, it lacked the punch I was used to. This little KEF sub is replacing a 12" Velodyne that I've had almost as long as the Reference 3 speakers. My room is about the size of Mr. Darko's and the big Velodyne left me with two options: left corner or right corner. It ended up in both spots over its 26 year lifespan. For like 10 years it was in the left corner. After a repair needed to be performed on it, I stuck it in the right corner. But a couple years after moving it into its new position, I had sliding doors put in between the living room and dining room (just to the right of the sub), effectively closing off the room. This change really boosted the bass. I liked that. I got used to that sound. But when the Velodyne died two week ago, a new sub was needed. I read about this KEF mini sub and decided to try it out. Mainly because I want to keep the old Velodyne where it is so I didn't need to tear apart the room to get it out of the corner AND because it has been doubling as a stand for a CD tower. So when this new little beast arrived and I centered it up in the middle of the room, sure, it sounded OK. But there are a few songs that used to go down DEEP at certain points in my old setup that weren't doing that any longer. Was it because baby KEF couldn't match the huge, old Velodyne? NOPE! Once I moved it in front of the Velodyne in that right corner, all the deepness returned. In fact, it might be even deeper right now. This is probably because I have the volume set higher on this KEF compared to the Velodyne, but whatever. The KEF KC62 WILL rumble a modest-size house like a big sub can. If you don't mind pictures on walls going crooked, then give this subwoofer a try.

One of my most anticipated and most enjoyed of your videos, John. Well done. Great complement to the podcast, too. I hope KEF send you a second KC62 so you can try out a 2 subwoofer system. Of course, that'll mean another week of the "subwoofer crawl". :-)

Cracking and informative review. I have two subs in a HT/ 2 channel music set up running through a AVR and, yes, getting the subs set up correctly is a bit of a faff. But when done right, changes everything. Thanks John.

After setting up your sub to where you want it, make sure you put white out on the dial to mark those perfect settings in case they get bumped. Great vid. Glad to hear such a tiny sub works well for you.

I own a pair of Magnepan 1.7i and I was in lack of bass slam denial for a while. Well I finally got a pair of REL T/9i subs. That changed everything in an outstanding way. It truly revolutionized my Maggie system. More than any other tweak, cable or other component could do. IMO subs are mandatory with Magnepans. Like you said, John, once you try the sub(s) be prepared to keep them. You won’t want them to leave.

I got a lot out of this review, thanks. I have a different (non-Kef) setup but so much is useful and transfers over. The placement, crossover approach, active vs passive speaker considerations.

I have just introduced a pair of JBL-100’s into my home theatre room where there is a Klipsch SPL-150. At the moment the sub isn’t in play for two channel but I may have a play this holiday weekend. This channel is costing me dearly! JBL’s, Meze and door stops!!!

Thanks for this video - it was very informative. I’m currently putting a system together consisting of Technics SU-G 700 (when I can get one), BlueSound Node, Technics SL1200GR (already have), and the KEF LS50 Meta. I was thinking about adding a sub at a later date so this has been really helpful to watch.

The biggest points you make regarding set up is still valid for larger subwoofers too. While a larger subwoofer can get much louder, for rooms or spaces that require it, it's going to be that much more of a task to set up and adjust as time goes on.

I recently used a subwoofer to solve an issue with bass boom (room mode issue) with my speakers playing at full range, it may sound counter intuitive using a sub woofer to solve a bass issue but it can really help, especially if your speakers are stuck against a wall in a small room (welcome to UK living!), using a high pass filter of around 70-80hz is a good place to start, you don't really want to go much higher than that otherwise you can start to hear where the bass is coming from.

A letter of thanks just sent to the Epsom branch of Sevenoaks HiFi: Good Morning Epsom SSAV Just a few lines to thank you for the extremely prompt delivery of my new KEF mini Subwoofer. As you can see below, now installed and fully operational. An absolutely doddle to set up, and even fresh out the box with no running in, already giving superb results! I have been listening this morning to various organ works CDs and suddenly the big pipes come to the fore, sounds which you feel rather than hear! I have by trial and error, found for the ATC SCM40 speakers that cut off at 50hz and volume at 11.00 o’clock are the best settings. The Tri amped ATCs already provide wonderful hefty bass, but the little KEF adds the cream of sub bass to the menu. At this moment listening to the 2011 remastered Dark Side of The Moon and the difference is stunning, with track 3, On The Run, one has become aware of the sub bass which now plumbs new depths. The little KEF definitely defies the Laws of Physics, such sound should not emanate from some thing so ridiculously small!

Finally! A proper review of this sub. Thank you, John. Other KZfaqrs have told us how great it is but not really discussed it in detail. I am floored by what KEF has done. This appears to be a serious piece of kit. Does it have good cone control? I'm guessing yes. Once you had it properly situated, did you tweak the settings from track to track or album to album? It would be difficult for me to leave the app alone.
