Additional Tips: 1. Use the Flirc USB receiver to be able to control play/pause, next/prev track using an IR remote. This needs to be configured in the Ropiee configuration page. This is pretty awesome as you don't have to unlike your phone/tablet every time you just want pause the music or skip tracks. 2. Use right angled adapters for cleaner cable routing, I use two USB-C adapters for power, one USB-A adapter for the DAC connection, another for the Flirc remote receiver connection and finally a ethernet adapter. You might also be able to find cables with right angled adapters. 3. To solve the display angle problem, keep the unit upside down! You'll need to jerry rig some kind of support to keep it standing. I use an Audioquest binding post wrench and some blu-tack :-).

I built something similar and used a HiFiberry hat with this case. I did have to modify the case slightly to allow the coax out to fit the case. I’m also using a usb splitter with one power supply for the screen and the RPi. It’s a pretty cool setup.

To reduce the number of power cables, use the jumper cables with the display. Use a power supply that provides atleast 3amps 5v on the usb C and the power low message will go away.

Nice. I packaged up my Squeezebox Touch and put it back in the box after replacing it on my bedside table with a touchscreen & pi & dac hat, because they were more stable and capable than the squeezebox. I tried volumio, but switched to PiCore player after not being able to get volumio to access files on the LMS server in the basement. I always suspected that volumio could read an LMS server elsewhere on the network, but could never find out how to make it work (there's lots of info on making the volumio be an LMS server, I could not find any for volumio as an LMS client).

i built something very similar about 5 years ago with a hifiberry dac+ lite (it had to be a lite because the non lite version uses i2c and clashes with the screen. i only used 1 power supply, a 5.5v 6a power brick w/leads soldered directly to the gpio. it powers all units flawlessly without the current limiting of the poly fuse. running osmc/kodi with a custom skin/build.i also had to flip the screen and touch interface 180 degrees but it had to be done in the boot config file. main use is for pandora and internet radio and streaming from my own media server while working in the shop. very reliable unit.

Love this idea. When the Raspberry Pi 4 4GB comes down to its normal $55 USD price instead of the current $200 I'll consider building one. Curious how the USB output of a Pi 4 compares to the Lightning port of a "decent" late model Apple iPAD as you used in a previous video? Great video by the way. Loved the presentation and clear instructions. Not getting bogged down installing all those additional jumper wires in order to power the assembly with one PSU would make it far easier and as you noted, allow it to power an external DAC.

nice vid as always John, never really understood wanting a touchscreen streamer/digital playback device although plenty seem to like the idea like you said. We've had remote controls for decades now so having a fixed touch interface away from the seating seems a bit retrograde.
@NL0Gwenster
@NL0Gwenster 2 жыл бұрын
I understand where your coming from. But please explain to me how with a traditional remote control (i.e a bar shaped device in x size) you will navigate an entire "modern library" of digital music with potentially hundreds if not thousands (connected to Tidal etc. service) albums and singles without any sort of visual feedback ? Cause if you can solve that for me, hell I will take your traditional remote control. Currently , the traditional RC only works best in more traditional applications where you have inserted a single piece of media, as in a CD.

this is to stream via the Wi Fi. So basically you don't need to plug in your ipad, you can just connect to your wi-fi, play a song then the streamer will convert the signal into your speakers wirelessly.
@tanakax25
@tanakax25 2 жыл бұрын
There's not a price or function advantage to doing something like compared just buying a fire tablet. But you're doing it yourself, however you see fit for various design decisions. You're doing a lot of it yourself, learning a lot along the way, and probably (most definitely) making mistakes. But that's the point!

Volumio is a nice polished OS for the Pi, but I really don't like the subscription model for what is essentially a pretty UI. I have a pi which is running Spotify connect, MPD, Airplay 2, Tidal Connect (MQA) and a few other functions. It's headless (so no screen). It's not quite as plug and play as Volumio, but all of the features that Volumio lock behind a premium subscription fee are readily available for the pi to install for free.

So tempted by this, but the annual subscription for either Volumio or Roon is the biggest impediment. The visual element is great and using the Tidal, Qobuz, or Spotify media *without* an annual fee would make this a killer option. The allure of Roon is lost on me, even after a recent trial. $120USD a year for the nice interface on top of subs for whichever streaming services one uses. I just don't get it.

Another great video. I had an original Squeezebox. It died. Miss it. I eventually, with the help of my geeky son in law, moved to Pi's, first with Volumio but eventually went to Diet Pi, using the Logitech Media Software. I added Qobuz. I've had an Allo USBridge for several years, running everything, but at my age of 66, I've been thinking of simplifying and throwing out my preamp, streamer, DAC etc for an NAD C658. I also really want to try Dirac, and this looks like an easy way. But, still, here's another great option, and I'm sure I could even throw Diet PI with LMS and Qobuz in it, and truck on down the road. I had been thinking of going back to a stock Pi. Gives me pause. It's a great time to be into audio. Except for the delays. 😉

Yeah, I needed a low-cost streamer for the den. Thought of a Pi but they are non-existent here in the U.S. (or going for 4X their usual price), so I bought the WIIM Mini. Works perfectly fine with Tidal Connect, especially since the firmware update to lossless via the Toslink optical output. I'm using it to feed the DAC inside an A/V Receiver and it is working well for that application.

I'm eventually going to have to make the move. My quest is trying to have as few things plugged in as I can. I have a unit, that is very hard to replace, and maybe someone out knows a replacement. This unit can stream digitally, Spotify, Netflix and Amazon to a DAC. It can play CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray. It can take sources like an external hard drive, filled with CD quality. It can also take any CD you insert and burn it at full bit rate, to an internal 80gb hard drive. It's a playstation 3. Playstation 4,5 can't do all of these things. So I'm looking for an all in one that's able to do some of these things. P.S. another bonus with the PS3, is I can control Spotify and KZfaq with my phone as a remote.

As you started this by mentioning the Squeezebox Touch, many may prefer to use piCorePlayer, a similar dedicated Pi image that can be used headless or with a touch screen and acts as a Squeezebox for use with Logitech Media Server. I've got a headless Pi model B with a Cirrus/Wolfson sound card attached, that feeds a topping DX3Pro+ on my desk (via coax) and a touch screen version in the lounge. The lounge unit uses a SmartiPi case, which has a Justboom Digi HAT inside, feeding a Chord Mojo via Optical as the DAC. The Digi HAT comes with an IR remote sensor that can be used with a standard Squeezebox remote, if you have one, and works out of the box with piCorePlayer.

Can this be used to select music, or do you still need another device for that? Personally, I'd vastly prefer a dedicated touch device to select and control Roon vs. my phone (or desktop, etc). They're cheap enough that I could attach them to most of my end points which would allow other folks in the house to select/play music.

The simple answer is the cutouts would not be lined up. But I did think the same thing in the Fall, when I made my Roon endpoint with a screen. Couldn't they just design the screen cases 180 degrees rotated in the first place? Sure the cutouts would be on the other side, but so what, eh?
