I made these to work with the main speakers in my dedicated listening room. They act similar to side surround speakers and don't put out much bass. But with a separate subwoofer, these sound very good indeed.
They are open baffle, in that they don't have a box. Making a speaker that way has some advantages, in that it put out sound from the rear as well that can sound more "full" and "open" and less "boxy". The output pattern is reduced on the sides of the speakers, making them more directional.
Not enough detail in this video? What to learn more? Watch the full build series I made for these speakers in this playlist:

Dang.... those (nearly) freehand router cuts, those freehand spade bit holes, the perfect, perfect plunge cuts for the speaker holes... so neat and clean and *STRAIGHT*... I just can't imagine the number of yours, weeks, decades of practice it takes to be THAT good.

Hello. Two observations of your crossover and it’s cover. The orientation of your coils are the same and therefore there will be coupling of the two sections of your crossover. Steel has magnetic properties and will enhance the coupling of your two coils. You have in effect built a transformer that destroys the design characteristics of your crossover. I suggest you replace that plate with a thick piece of aluminum or another non-ferrous metal, (I think McMaster Carr sells copper electrical bus bars by the foot that are rather heavy), that has the same weight. Orientate one of those coils such that it is at right angles to that of the other. Just mounting it vertically should suffice. If there is insufficient space for that with the cover installed, cut out a channel in the block of metal that allows for the needed extra mounting space. If you think they sound good now, these corrections will prevent crosstalk between the two drivers, (low frequencies bleeding into the tweeter and high frequencies bleeding into the woofer), that will create smearing. They will sound even better.

I've enjoyed the entire series - congratulations on reaching the summary video! Based on seeing your videos on DSP and amplifier building, I'm left wondering if you have a general philosophy on when it makes sense to do pure digital crossovers, when not, and when to do something hybrid. Would be great to see a video on that topic, as I'm currently finishing a DIY sub and amp, and nearly ready to build the matching 2- or 3-way bookshelf pair.

John, nicely done. Working on a a TB W8-1772 full range design with an 8 inch neo woofer. High and low pass crossover and paired with a SVS Pro 1000 sealed sub. All in under $1K, would put it up against about anything out the in the > $5000 range.

I consider it a mistake and stupidity to build open speaker systems without a closed cabinet. Since the sound wave emitted by the back side works in antiphase with the sound wave that is emitted in front. This effect is especially noticeable at low frequencies. Therefore, the bass does not sound.
@boomcrash
@boomcrash 5 ай бұрын
So what you’re saying is that you’ve never heard a pair of quality OB speakers. That’s cool. Enjoy your boxes. Also, consider taking a class in acoustics. I did. I consider it a “mistake” and “stupidity” to make comments without the technical knowledge to back it up.
@ZaripovPro
@ZaripovPro 4 ай бұрын
@@boomcrash I never said I haven't heard a couple of quality speakers. I have an excellent sound system. And I also heard something similar to what you are doing. It doesn't sound. Or you don't usually perceive sound waves. Sorry.
