I think it’s also due to barriers disappearing regarding what is and isn’t cool in skateboarding, paired with older former skaters getting back into it because “being too old” to skate isn’t a thing anymore.

At 56 with bad legs, i don't skate anymore, but I'm partial to those old 80's style boards. I used to bomb parking garages on my Black Flag "Joan Crawford board. I once saw a Rodney Mullen video and set out to try some flips on it, long before kickflips were a standard thing, to little success. I miss skating though. I bought a longboard 10 years ago, but can't stand on it anymore. Oh well, thanks for a trip down memory lane John.

At 52, I feel you, but I just noticed a little local skatepark that nobody uses as we live in a more rural setting now. Every time I pass it, I consider hitting up the skate shop and getting back at it. I stopped around the time technicality started to dominate over style and aggression. Don't get me wrong, Mullen is my all time favorite and personally think he is the GOAT simply because he basically invented all the flip and spin variations that seem ubiquitous today, but a guy like Vallely just brought brute force and aggression to street skating, and guys like Hosoi and Cab just had that effortless style that made them something to watch. Maybe start really cautiously, and ease back into some moves. People keep telling me it gets easier to move these aching joints when you use them 😆. Just have to start working on my story for the inevitable ER visit 😂.

The Santa Cruz boards that are basically a combo between the old school and popsicle are PERFECT for long distance street skating. Throw some 58 spitfire wheels on and it can do all the tricks you need but it’s also gives you more stability to cruise (also shout out to Franky from primitive riding an egg shaped 9inch deck those are dope too)

Do you have 1 on mind specifically. Im really new to skating and thinking about a more comfortabele street setup, also for rougher roads.
@ejj9956
@ejj9956 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeroenbeskers3012 my street setup at the moment is a 9.0 Element deck (Santa cruz makes 9 also) standard popsicle shape, Independent hollow trucks, Bronson g3 bearing, Spitfire full conical 58m wheels and grizzly grip (no different than any other grip) I’ll warn you tho this is a BIG setup and most ppl wouldn’t go past an 8.5. I like it because I’m 6’1 and have size 13 feet so a bigger board feel normal to me and seeing franky from primitive crush on a 9.1 deck. The big wheels and big deck and wide trucks help on rougher ground imo. I wouldn’t get a shaped deck like the Santa Cruz ones I talked about in my first comment if you’re new to skating, I think a popsicle shape is better at first.

Siiick 🔥 I grew up with this kind of shape. I had a Mike McGill board. Nowadays what confuses me the most with flat nose boards is just throwing down the board and mounting it with the front foot. I can’t “feel” my foot position like on a popsticle board, so I’m sometimes mounting it a little too far out on the nose. It feels kinda scary. With a modern street board feet just fall into place because I can feel the nose rise.

To me, old-school fish-boards are supposed to be like half-way between a longboard and trick board. They're supposed to have bigger, wider wheels with a wider turning radius. They're supposed to coast and retain speed longer. They're supposed to be small enough to still be able to "thrash". Built for skating around the city and thrashing it up wherever you go.

I skated one of these old school decks, for the hell of it, a few boards back, and I remember it being poppier than a usual board, but harder to do any flip tricks, because of the lack of concave. I didn’t like that I couldn’t do tricks that require an actual nose, and that was pretty much my main issue with it. I thought it was really fun for transition skating, tho!

Got an old (not used) Dog Town in my closet ,might go skate it. It’s a bit tricky getting use to kick turn when skating vert with it ,since the balance is different. I usually skate my 8’5 -9’30-10 inch boards (modern shape ) when park skating. Loved this
@gkft
@gkft 2 жыл бұрын
37 year old former skater (who occasionally skates) here, this wasn't surprising to me for the simple reason that today's "modern" "popsicle stick" boards are so wide and bloated now that aside from the shape difference they probably skate similar due to the weight of it. I went to replace one of my old decks a few years back and was astounded to find out that everybody today are riding boards that are usually at the narrowest 8" and on average somewhere in the 8.5" range. This was absolute insanity to me because as a kid 8" and wider boards were basically considered vert boards and were for gnar-gnar ramp skaters only. Younger people have explained to me that the reasoning behind wider boards is just to be able to stick landings that much easier, but again, it's so hard to understand this when back in the day going from a 7.5 or 7.63 board to a 7.75 one would have a noticeable detrimental impact to being able to actually spin clean 360flips, inward heelflips, etc. Much props to the younger generation to basically train themselves to overcome this and do the same stuff and better on these wider boards, but by the looks of it it is something that to a degree does remain true.

I use that board mainly for the vert because I'm learning that it's really easy to go up and down and for the park cuz I like riding the bowls. My other set up is a freestyle popsicle. Im into it because even when I was young I wasnt that good at tricks and mostly used it to cruse so it makes sense that after not skating 15 years I dont need a trick board but dont want a long board and I wear a 13 size shoe so a wider deck fits me better these days. Pretty darn good on the old school deck right off the bat. I wish they would use the new school bolt pattern on all the old board reissues. My guess is that there are more people that would want to use trucks with the new pattern than ones using old school trucks. Indy makes 6 hole base plates. Surprisingly, the other manufacturers, like Thunder, mostly don't. I guess they just don't care about old school.

The forefathers of skating, and who put skating on the map, all used the old school deck. Skaters like Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Natas Kaupas, Mark Gonzales and other greats used the old school deck. The "popsicle deck" was even implemented in the 80's but was categorized as a "freestyle deck" and was mastered by skate gods like Rodney Mullens and Per Welinder. They were specifically made for street skating and allowed skaters to do unusual tricks because of its shape. Glad to see these dope young skaters appreciating the old school decks and keeping the memories alive. 🛹🤙

I feel like these old school boards can now be interpreted as ‘shaped boards’, like now it can be part of a skater’s preference whether he prefers a shaped board or regular popsicle stick shaped board

Those old school shapes came from pool and vert ramp skating as there was no street skating back then. We used to street skate on them because there wasn't any other type of deck to use. So why you would take a deck designed for vert and street skate on it seems an odd choice. But, as you found out, you can do it, it's just harder.

Out of nowhere man I’ve really been interested in skating. I actually feel like damn this doesn’t really even seem that difficult to Ollie or learn these tricks anymore. And all I need is a board and I can’t wait to get paid. I wanna shred and have great balance. I used to dream about recording myself as a kid doing something and I think I’m going to learn how to skateboard and do some tricks on camera just to prove to myself like damn this is another thing I love to do and it’s impressive to me when I see people skating. Y’all look cool and intelligent I’m gonna get out there and try.

I first rode a 10 when i was a kid. In my teens Popsicles came into vogue. At 38 im on an 8.6 old-school form with a lip on the nose. Im old and technical street isnt viable with my busted joints so injust carve lines at the park and i like the feel.

Great video, good to see a direct comparison. Did you use risers on the Saiz and what size wheels did you skate with it?

I also wonder if it is because of how consumerized and “sport-like” skateboarding is becoming. These boards represent a time when skating was still counterculture, where popsicle boards don’t. The ESPN, jock, high-school sports vibe is what skateboarding is now, so it’s only natural a subset of skaters are going to veer the opposite direction.

I'm 47 & I bumped into a teen skater neighbor of mine while riding my 80' s style skateboard and he was on his modern popsicle board & I offered him to try of it & he popped an ollie but prior to that he said "That is sick !!!!!" I guess today's kids find it cool 😎

I patiently waited 20 years for them to come back, could never get past the fact popsicles (and no bigger than 7.75!) were the only option available back then. You basically had to skate what manufacturers and pros thought was cool at the time, namely "tech street" as everyone else, or nothing at all. Hard times.

It’s scary but tuck your knees like a ball on that backflip, you’ll whip around! Biggest word of advice, stretch a bunch before flipping, stretch until you’re literally bored. You don’t wanna throw out your back because your not stretchy enough man.

I still skate shaped boads... if you get a reissue or a shape right before the Vallely barnyard, which was the predecessor to the popsicle stick, the noses were larger and you can pop a nollie.

My friend has a mini ramp and a bit of a skate museum in his basement. I just donated a Natas deck that's a purple version of my first deck. You can find footage here on the Tube. Hamell SK8 or some jazz like that. If you find it you'll see some sick old boards and weird, whacked out setups.

I would think that the main thing is it not being symmetrical would probably make a bigger difference for things like halfpipes or any nose tricks. It's a weird in-between board for longboarding and regular skateboards. I'd say that for anyone who really just wants to do tricks stick with a standard shaped skateboard, but those that want a smaller board for riding around this is a good option.

I remember the time popsicles and small 30mm wheels came in.... I saw sadly how all this cool 80s skateboards just disappeared. Now people buy reissues but only to hang in the wall or use it as cruisers. I hope one day i could see all the kids ridding this skateboards again.

I sold my mint Simms Staab from the late ‘80s for more then $300 about 10-years ago. I never got much of a chance to use it because I was in the military when I bought it and it went into storage when I went over seas.

Uhhh..if you didn't know, you could get reissues of old school decks and shapes for as far back as when the Era for them ended. I had found a G&S old school reissue almost 15 years ago. I had a couple of friends that only skated on those decks through the early 2000. So I would just call this a product review for those who don't know and want to jump on a trend.
