Ingredients:
175g / 6½oz Self raising flour, If you’re using plain or all purpose flour add extra 1½tsp baking powder
90g / 3oz Granulated sugar
30g / 1oz Golden syrup or Corn syrup
175g / 6½oz Vegetable or Sunflower oil
4 Large eggs
30g / 1oz Cocoa powder
1tsp Baking powder
1tsp Vanilla extract
¼tsp Salt

Hi John, It is just after 5am here and just watched your video. I was after a cake for my wife to take to work tomorrow night. This is surely one to make her day. The way that you explain each step is crystal clear and we can hear that you are enjoying yourself as your voice has a smile added to it. I am sure that you enjoy doing these. What a retirement you are having. We all hope that you can start to enjoy the fruits of your labour soon (like chocolate). I too have dietary restrictions and like many other of your 52,000 subscribers. Interesting comment about jam and peanut butter. I worked in California in the 60s as a mother's help. Most favorite sandwich filling for lunch boxes was peanut butter and grape jelly jam. I still absolutely love it.Thankyou John for the memory

I saw this channel by accident and got hooked on all the great food. I have been pestering my Mom to make this chocolate cake since I watched this video. We had it last night for dessert and it was awesome. Mom didn't use the Nutella because my Father doesn't like hazelnuts, but this cake is really great just plain. Next time we have beef stew Mom promised she would try the crispy dumplings recipe. This channel rocks.

Hello John, I love cooking and making cakes, but every time I watch your videos and you mention cakes and custard, I have this vision of school dinners back in the late 60's and early 70's, infact to this day when I cook greens I remember the roast school dinners every other friday that I would have at my school.

This chocolate cake is so simple and easy to do. I made it today and it tasted lovely, moist on the inside and crispy on the outside and full of flavour. It’s a no fail recipe that is so versatile that it will now be my go-to cake recipe, loved it. One tweak I did was to warm the syrup and add a little hot water to the cocoa powder, as this gives the cocoa a better flavour, then mix them together, then put it in the egg mix. Delicious cake thanks John.

I made this yesterday for dessert since I hadn’t baked in a while, I used Lyle’s Golden syrup since I could not find the bottle of corn syrup and topped the cake with biscoff cookie butter and the results were fantastic. Thank you Chef John. One important tip , look out for the baking time depending on your oven, mine got done at least 12 minutes earlier in a true convection oven although I had set it for 50 minutes but still kept an eye on it.

FYI....mix a little cocoa powder in with the flour before you dust your pan...won't have any white flour on your chocolate cake.....

So my friends and neighbours get a stream of scones, cakes, etc. and I only very occasionally try the fruits of my labours. :( It's your orange and lemon sponge this afternoon!
