Klon KTR vs Ceriatone Centura - Do you NEED the REAL Thing

For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ So this is the Klon KTR with the magic diodes, and the Ceriatone Centura (which has diodes, but they're not magic unfortunately). Obviously the Ceriatone is pretty expensive anyway, but maybe this video might help you decide which will suit you better, or whether it's worth forking out on....
This preset is "VoxAC15Vs" and I'm running the Klon into the front of my HX Stomp.

Thank you for doing this. I have been looking at the Centura. In this demo, it seems like there's just a touch more sizzle on the top end - and the KTR seems like it has more 'body' - something in the low-mids perhaps. Two years ago - when you could pick up a KTR for $325ish, I still passed on it. I'm not averse to buying pricey pedals - but the Klon isn't doing anything drastically different from many of the Klones to justify the cost. I have been very happy in the past with the ARC Effects Klone 2, Rockett Archer IKON and the Tumnus Deluxe. Another great vid. Thx.

Andertons just did a comparison with 2 ktrs, 2 klons, and a tumnus. I liked the tumnus the best. I also liked that you don't have to clear off 16 pedals to fit it on your board. And I totally agree about the mid push into a vox. I usually stack a klone into gladio (dumbleish thing) for maximum mids.

Both sound great and I suspect it's due to your ability to play guitar. The component variances in electrical components mean that all analog pedals will sound different, even from the same manufacturer.

I have, and love, both. They are very close. My particular KTR has slightly thicker low end (SLIGHTLY), and given it's smaller size, switchable buffer, and ability to take a regular 9v power supply... it's the one I use.

I have both,big lover of the KTR but when I got Centura it was obvious that the Centura sounds better to my ears.

The KTR sounds slightly spongier in a pleasing way to my ears through 4G on my iPhone and AirPods…

KTR just seems to have a clearer sound to it. Ceriatone thickens up those low mids tho which sounds sweet on your single coils.

You need the JHS Switchback with red remote for these type back-to-back comparisons. Also, do you know when the KTR’s went from all white lettering to the grey text K-L-O-N?

They always had the grey KLON letters. I was just reading a thread on thegearpage when they were first being announced and they had the grey KLON from day 1.

Great Vid! I believe both pedals have built in buffers so in order to see the difference I believe you would have to separate them from each other. Its all about the impedance. Any how, great videos and awesome playing! ~cheers John

@@johnnathancordy Doesn't the buffer from the first pedal still feed into the second pedal? I tried comparing a couple Klon clones and ran into this..

After Anderton's videos, the Tumnus, Archer, et. al, are much preferable price wise.

Here are some empirical-as-possible tests, adding an original silver Centaur to the mix, as well as some alternative diodes in the Centura, measuring pot positions with an ohmmeter (rather than using visual knob position): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q9pmrKR8tq7WdX0.html

I've got the Ceriatone. It doesn't sound exactly the same as the original, but I've read an explanation about why that is and the mod required to 'fix' it - something to do with it being based on a later Klon circuit with a couple of different value resistors(?). Honestly, unless you have access to an original, who'd know? Thumbs up for 'Waiting For An Alibi'.

I prefer Tumnus. It’s a third of the size and half the price of the Centura. And the deluxe, with all its enhancements, sounds better, is a standard size, and $200 new, less used.

@@ojaisherpa Put an eq pedal in your effects loop. That may help you dial in the tone your after.

If ur obsessing over Klons and the clones, just grab a Centura and take if for a spin. These comparisons have limits. Your rig will produce different results and when u mess with one for the first time you'll see a side by side is very difficult because the settings are hard to duplicate across the different clones. The Centura is really cool and available all over the verb.....

The more expensive pedal is always going to "sound better" why? Because it's all about marketing hype and money! Hendrix and Clapton weren't worried about not playing through some £100 cable to get that mythical tone that's being sold to to upcoming aspiring guitarists. I've been playing for over 50 years and have been lucky to have played through all the so called Hallowed gear. Just be yourself and practice.

@@CMHobbies Sorry to hear it died mate I've only ever played a tubescreamer before as a boost for a high gain amp so hopefully will dig the Klon vibe. It hasn't arrived yet 3 weeks and sill wating for the pedal lol. Love your playing thou great stuff!

I thought the KTR had a little extra mojo that the Centura was missing... The Centura sounded close but had a generic quality to it ,The KTR definitely sounded more nuanced with more complexity ... Don't know if it's worth the difference in the price of admission ... The crazy thing is guitar geeks may know the difference but 90% of your audience wouldn't !😁

Dude it’s the same circuit, there is no “mojo”, it’s called pot tolerances you have to adjust the knobs for them to sound the same, you can’t just set them the exact same. Furthermore, if he was to have literally swapped the audio from one to the other I’m willing to bet you likely would have still said the same thing even though the ktr should then sound “generic”, and that’s just called confirmation bias, whatever the ktr sounds like will be “better” because reasons.

@@Avatar7x7 I don't care if you think you're the best listener in the world with unicorn ears, a circuit is a curicit is a circuit. Potentiometers (the knobs) have a parts tolerance of ±20%, that's the difference you're hearing, not the circuit. Take any good klon klone that did their research and adjust the knobs by ear against an original and it will sound the same. Not close, not almost there, not "lacking mojo", it will be the same because it is the same.

@@SpencerP96 You can use cheaper components and have the same circuit/parameter settings and it'll sound different because of fluctuations and variables in the components.. Some of the best audio engineers will tell you that all LA 2A's don't sound the same, you can listen to a few tube amps same brand same model and one will sound better than the other because of intangible anomalies - .. You sound like a techy without discerning ears.. Like a guy that knows the technical side of football but can't play.. You funny 😝

buying a ktr as a collectible is funny. to the 'real' klon owners you still arent in the club and never will be. you're the guy with the houseboat at the yacht club. pony up the 3k USD if you wanna be part of the club. Anyhow they both sound ok. IMO the Ceriatone is well built and justifies the ask, but I still would pick the Red Snapper over either of these.
