It took him six years, upwards of £20000, and it looks like he learned to code to build Johnny 5! What an amazing thing! Yes, a labor of love! I wonder how many rewatches of Short Circuit he had to have to figure out components, and get the look right!

Its amazing that the movie prop creators of these robots started from scratch and created these working models in months instead of years. They were very well thought out as well. The crouch, stand and stair climbing, all terrain capability is something we still don't see in commercial robots. Very impressive. There is one YT video shows a machine shop during Covid making parts for J5 they never completed the project due to other business. But, IIRR they were going to make their CAD drawings for hip swivel and shoulder mounts available.

When I was a kid, I always wanted to have a real life-size replica. Seeing how little you can do to achieve a result like this is just amazing! This is wonderfull!!!

I love him so much. I like most 80s kids have fond memories of Johnny 5. Back in the 80s I don’t think it was even possible to build a version of him as functional as that. A lot of the shots were of pupated versions. With AI what it is now give it another 40 years and it will probably be possible to make an actual Johnny 5. As is you could audio sample from the movies and use AI to replicate the voice to anything you want him to say.

What a legend this guy is for building this. Amazing.
