I'm a 50 year old lifelong Dodgers fan. I remember watching Bench behind the plate (on the TV) and how easy he made it look. He would casually backhand balls in the dirt without even moving to block them with his body, like every other catcher had to do. Oh, and he had the best throwing arm at his position. Probably the best hitting catcher of his era, too. What a talent!

I bought the cheapest lot in his auction, he's my favorite player of all time, he's a top 10 player of all time easily. Underrated. Greatest Catcher, not even close.

I'm so old that I remember watching Johnny Bench hitting home runs for the Buffalo Bisons at War Memorial Stadium.

Was 12 years old in 1977. Lived in Nashville. Loved the Reds. When we played stickball, and we played a lot, I was always the Reds. I batted my innings as each Red: the Joe Morgan elbow-pump, the Pete Rose crouch. It’s how I became a switch hitter. My favorite player was George Foster, by the way. What a lineup:: Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Ken Griffey, Johnny Bench, Tony Perez, Concepcion, Foster, and Geronimo.

I was 11 in 1977...grew up a Dodger fan Living 10 minutes from Dodger Stadium. Seeing Dodgers-Reds series was awesome. Same division...they always came to town. I always rooted for them In the World Series representing the National League. So I got to know that team pretty well. Many of my all-time favorite players came from the Big Red Machine. In little league, I would sprint to first base on a walk, just like Pete Rose!

Johnny Bench is the greatest catcher all time, no need for imo...The Cincinnati Reds had 2 of the greatest position players of all time, Best Catcher, Best 2nd basemen all time. RIP...Joe Morgan

@@christophernickerson8225 9-time All Star, 5-time Gold Glove winner and would have had more if Ozzie Smith were not in the National League. Two-time world champion, several playoff teams. Reds team captain. Was the glue, with Morgan, of the infield for the Big Red Machine.

Steven Lundgrin I agree with you Steve. So many of them are in the hall, maybe Davey is a victim of a great team & the negativity of the fall out from Rose? He was the 1rst defensive wiz at Short stop that i remember?

@@dennisperin2989 There was Mark Belanger and Luis Aparicio, but Concepcion was a defensive whiz and a clutch hitter. I think you had to see him play to appreciate him, and he was overshadowed by Morgan, Bench, Perez and Rose. Without Concepcion at SS the Big Red Machine would not have been near as great as it was.
