If you weren’t around when the episode aired you will miss a bunch of references. Here are a few… *“The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” Episode 3289 broadcast on October 28, 1975* * The remark about sending Sadat’s Egypt $1 million was true. The mental picture of the (very Jewish) Mayor Beame of NYC would have been funny as 11 days earlier the city came within hours of a massive default (it was saved by a grubby deal with the teacher’s union). The day after this episode ran President Ford would (in so many words) tell the city to drop dead. * When Johnny later jokes about the “Big Mac” bonds he’s not talking about hamburgers. Those were the (seemingly worthless) bonds from New York City’s “Municipal Assistance Corporation” (MAC). These bonds were actually paid off early to the astonishment of many. * The fruit fly story which caused the monologue to die was real. It was one of the first “Med Fly” infestations in California. A later one in 1981 did a good job of torpedoing then Gov. Jerry Brown’s reputation as an environmentalist. Spreading sterile male flies actually is one of the main methods of getting rid of the nasties. * Fred de Cordova was actually born on Oct 27th (1910). He died in 2001. * The Girls Scouts (quietly) started accepting boys in 2011. * Check out the size of Ed McMahon’s tie. That was the height of fashion in 1975. * Funny that “Aunt Blabbie” had three husbands. At the time Carson was on his third wife. * Earl Butz was a longtime Secretary of Agriculture who was notorious for sticking his foot in his mouth. For fun, check out Wikipedia for the remark which got him fired. 😬 * Co-ed restrooms weren’t really a thing until 2015 (and they still don’t get a laugh) * “The Howard Cosell Show” Johnny keeps referring to is “Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell” which was (briefly) on ABC. It was dreadful. * Johnny really did admire Robert Blake. The remark about shooting people who bother him is ironic given what will happen later. Blake was just finishing up his first season working on “Baretta” * Kelly Monteith was big in the UK. He passed away earlier this year age 80. * Tom Braden was a really interesting character. He had already been a big time CIA agent and newspaper man. After “Eight is Enough” he started, with Pat Buchanan, a great current affairs show called “Crossfire” on CNN. * Speaking of “cutting off”, this show was originally in a 90 minute slot but because the video is a very recent syndicated broadcast swiped from WHO in Des Moines, IA. Along with having its video pirated WHO is noteworthy as having a “W” prefix (and only 3 characters) while being west of the Mississippi. This is because its AM predecessor, WHO 1040, was founded in 1924 when the W/K dividing line was the western border of Iowa.
