"Camptown Races" was taught to us in elementary school, along with some other traditional songs from the 19th Century, back when I was a child in the 1970s. Each of us picked up a copy of a music book inside the classroom, and all of us had to turn to the assigned page given to us by the teacher. The song was played on a 33-RPM record, and then, after the song was over, the song was replayed on the record, and the teacher and the students all had to sing along to the words on the page, based upon how the song sounded like on the record. The class sang three or four songs during the "music" part of class, then we moved on to another subject, like Math or Social Studies.

People lived differently back then, especially Cash who went hard. Twenty seven years of age would be the equivalent of 39-40 in modern terms. People grew up faster and aged faster.
@frankelliott93604 жыл бұрын
Johnny Cash, like other musicians of his time, had to tour and had to perform with very little sleep. Speed (Benzedrine) was available as an over-the-counter treatment for asthma. During the 40's and the 50's men from all backgrounds in society used it. This is why they aged faster. Johnny Cash documented his struggles with benzedrine in his album "One Piece at a Time."

I have no idea when the show was done. I just like the tune and found it on here. I'm not at all knowledge about that era. I just know that Ives was very versatile- music, movies, tv, you name it. He won or was nominated for an Oscar for 'The Big Country'-
@AdamWildavsky Жыл бұрын
It was Jerome Moross's score that was nominated for the magnificent film 1958 film "The Big Country." As far as I know, Cash had no association with the film. I found a website, songlyrics, that claims that Cash released an album that year titled "The Big Country." I suspect that's a mistake by the site.
@MrPeterbs Жыл бұрын
@@AdamWildavsky Wow. A response to an 11 year old comment. It's confusing but going by memory I had posted a comment speculating that the poker playing guy we see from behind at the end of the video looked a lot like Burl Ives. Some other people weighed in and one said maybe it was Orson Welles. Mysteriously, those comments are now gone so I can see how someone like yourself just now seeing this might be confused. I wasn't making any speculations about Cash's musical work, I was mentioning that Ives got the nomination for Best Supporting Actor for 'The Big Country'. Hope that clarifies.
@AdamWildavsky Жыл бұрын
@@MrPeterbs The internet is eternal! Especially when we wish it weren't. I didn't read your comment carefully enough. You're correct - Ives won for Best Supporting Actor, and deservedly so. That's surely him at the end of the clip - he was the host of the show.
@MrPeterbs Жыл бұрын
@@AdamWildavsky Ah, so he was the host of this episode of Bell Telephone Hour. Anyway, speaking of 'The Big Country' , Gregory Peck was an attendee at my Catholic parish in Brentwood, CA when I was a child along with some other names you might have heard of from that time - Fred MacMurray, June Lockhart, Richard Egan, Anthony Caruso, Dennis Day ,etc. Those were the days.
