This video has an extra layer of gut punching hurt when you see howJune Carter Cash walks in and you see her love and concern looking at the man she loved for a lifetime. And within 4 months she would be gone and Johnny would follow 3 months later. It speaks to Trent Reznors brilliance when you hear his complicated reaction to this cover..ultimately ending on that song now belonged to Cash.

Thank you for the backstory on why Johnny covered this song. I didn’t know any of that. I do know that the older I get, the more I feel this song. The closing of the piano lid feels like the closing of a coffin lid to me. Some days that feels like a thing to be welcomed. Not being morbid. It’s why this song feels so true in Johnny’s hands.

I've seen this video a hundreds of times and knew some of the history of the video production and it's impact on his daughter and Trent, but did not hear the story that you conveyed about trying to get Johnny to connect with the song. Thanks for that. It shows the value of a good producer: Someone who is sensitive to the artist's sensibilities but also has a vision that the artist might not see.
