I remember watching this final episode, and crying because of his heroic “override” of command by Johnny Sokko. His choice to save humanity over himself made me a emotional.

It definitely was unique, in that for one shining moment, he (not "it," He) made his own choice, not under Johnny's orders, to fight & destroy the enemy, even at the cost of his own life. This would be echoed nearly 30 years later in "The Iron Giant." (Suuupermann...) Only wish there could've been a moment for Robot to transmit a spoken message back to Johnny: "NOOOSH!! This is Giant Robot. Do not be afraid. I know what I am doing. I know what must be done. I'm sorry. It is the only way. Thank you for everything, Johnny Sokko. Goodbye..." 🤖🇯🇵⛩️🗻

Well said my friend. I was in a ball of tears also and my older brother had to console me and explain to me that it was just a movie. But I couldn't understand was why would someone make a movie where the ending was so sad and tug at a young child's heart. I fell victim though. Even as an adult if I watch that ending, I can immediately remember what the young me was feeling when Giant Robot flew away with the Emporer Guillotine and not obeying Johnny Sokko's commands to stop the attack. That left me scarred for a long time.

My brother and I used to watch 'Giant Robot' after school in the early 70's when we lived in Southwest Philly. We also liked 'The Space Giants' with Goldar, Silvar and Gham. Ultraman was always my favorite. These shows were part of a great childhood when, even in the big city, we rode our bikes everywhere, jumping over plywood ramps and playing outside all day without a care. When the street lights came on, it was time for dinner at home just in time to watch Starsky and Hutch or SWAT! Not gonna lie, we liked watching the Waltons and Love Boat with mom every week after she'd watch the Six Million Dollar man with us. Pretty sure that was just because of Lee Majors though, haha!! I see some of the stuff kids watch these days and think how good we really had it 'back in the day!'

As a kid, this movie changed my life. This is my all-time favorite monster movie! I think I was 7 years old when I first saw it in the early 70's. Not gon even lie but I cried at the end of it. My older brother had to console me and tell me it was just a movie. But seeing my monster hero fly up into orbit and crash into a flaming hot meteor ball of fire, I wasn't trying to hear that. I was sad for at least a month!

I watched Johnny Sokko and Ultra Man on PBS. Both shows ended with Ultra Man returning to his home planet for repair and his human host had to stay and wait for his return. Johnny Sokko's Flying Robot was fighting the Goldar. He ran out of nuclear power and Johnny couldn't control him. Goldar removed one of his claws, threw it among the humans. Flying Robot reactives, grabs Goldar and fly's into deep space. Flying Robot may have had a fail safe program no one knew existed. He sacrificed himself to keep Goldar from taking over Earth. Johnny and his team were brought tears but they saluted Giant Robot as his fly off and exploded. I was very unhappy but it was a good show. I'm 61 and I still manga, anime and of course Gojira!

Johnny Sokko was the greatest Cold War spoof that ever existed! You had the Gargoyles, looking like a bunch of rejects from Castro and Guevara's ranks with their berets, and their leader, Spider, looking like a N. Korean or Chinese general. And then you had the space villains, and their crazy costumes, and a very Cthulhu-looking Emperor Guillotine. Add the squeaky-clean Unicorns and Giant Robot. Add one half hour of solid action from start to finish, and you had a one hell of a fun show! They must have had a blast making it, I know WE loved it as kids!

That's the whole thing..it's a Cold War spoof of epic proportions, and one solid block of action from start to finish. Above all, it's a great reminder of those long ago days gone by (for guys in my age group , anyhow).

I mean, it's hard to tell bad acting when it's an English dub of a Japanese series

Channel 20 (WXON) baby! I'm a Detroit native, and I remember watching Ultraman and Johnny Sokko on WXON for a few years, until they dropped those shows. Then, Channel 50 (WKBD) picked them up and played them on their Saturday "Creature Feature", along with Godzilla movies and the like. Fond, fond memories!!
