This is part 2 of the micro Tesla turbine mk2 building series. It took way longer than I was expecting, due to the fact that I had to rebuilt the rotor. I run into some issues while making it and the one you see on the video is practically the 4th rotor (and succesful) and each one was taking roughly 4-5 days to make. The new rotor has 22 total discs (instead of 18 that the original had). The most important thing though (and the reason that I had to remake it) was the spacers between the discs that are held in the 4 supporting tubes, which are way small in diameter thatn the original ones (1.9mm vs 7mm) allowing more airflow between the discs and thus increacing the boundary layer effect. I didn't finish the build on this part because the video is already lenghty and I didn't want to make you lose interest

+johnnyq90 the balancing issues you are having are they down to the spacing of the rotor?
@johnnyq90
@johnnyq90 7 жыл бұрын
No. I found that the top 6 discs after some certain rpm were shifting towards one side, which as a result creates a huge imbalance making the whole thing vibrating like crazy. A central brace must be made to hold in place the whole structure. Now I have disassembled the rotor to check if and how much the discs have distorted. I'm close to finishing it.

Put a counter weight opposite the heavy side. It's a trial and error thing, I've done pieces off of an inlet for a cooler head that needed over fifty pounds in counter weights put on it but you can really hear the difference. It goes from that Whoom whooom Whooom whooom sound as it spins out of balance to a pretty smooth sound. Whooom was the best I could come up with, LMAO but anyone who has ever heard an uneven weight spin on a lathe will know what I'm talking about. Very cool, what you are making, I love it.

Beautiful work. I look forward to seeing the testing. I do have one question; between MK1 and MK 2 you moved from securing the disks to the shaft by spokes in the disk to spacers secured to a hub, what was the reasoning behind that?
@johnnyq90
@johnnyq90 8 жыл бұрын
The rotor is basically slightly larger (25mm vs 20mm) and the reason for the central exhaust is for better airflow, the air has a greater opening to escape now, and I'm hoping to see some improvements.

Part of the reason you can't get it balanced properly is the e-clips, they are not balanced and at the speed that you're spinning that thing those are enough to throw it off even though they are very close to the shaft that slight amount of difference in weight from one side of the e-clip to the other is enough. The other problem you have is the vanes must be tapered to the edge not spaced with bushings. Each one should be turned and that means making a jig to hold each one after you turned the first face. The veins should have a razor blade Edge

I've read 3D metal printers can be about $50,000 minimum. Sounds expensive.

50k for a metal printer is a cheap one. We're talking about 6 figures for typical machines with multi material supports. But then 3D printer is a mega consumer and industry market. There's actually a learning curve and usually the cheapest printer in the market often requires more brain power.

I have no idea what the ultimate objective is. What might the finished turbine be used for? Great precision machining on some obviously outstanding equipment. And you skill is undisputed. Thanks.
