PSA - My cousin just went to Tsuta Ramen told me that their menu has updated their menu. The new bowl is now 2920 yen, but they top it off with a generous amount of fresh black truffle slices. I think you can still get the same bowl that I got, which may be the 1540 yen option on their menu (I'm not 100% positive on this though, you would have to ask them since I'm just reading the translation off their vending machine)

Not sure if someone else has confirmed this, but Ginza Location of Sushi no Midori is indeed DA BOMB. Great service as well as really nice environment once inside. Do be prepared to go ahead of time and get your ticket number as waits were on average one hour to two hours.

Nice video. Having lived in Japan for 8 years, there are two things that stand out with Japanese food across all prices levels- outstanding service and high quality food. Both are deeply cultural. This is what makes dining out in Tokyo always satisfying. The consistency of these two components are unmatched anywhere in the world.

I don't necessarily disagree with any of your suggestions, but as a Tokyo resident for about 11 years, your suggestions are very interesting. I'm aslo not a fan of the mountain potato (your yam). However, you've got a lot of deep froed food and seem to have missed a bunch of typical foods like tempura, grilled fish, wa-gyu (although I think your gyukatsu place uses wa-gyu), yakitori, and monja yaki (unique to Tokyo). You should also check out the abura soba (ramen without soup) that is quite new and really good. Although okonomiyaki and takoyaki are originally Osaka dishes, we've got some decent restaurants here as well. Hope you get a chance to try more on your next visit.
@JohnQuach
@JohnQuach 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll keep those in mind especially the abura soba, sounds like something that I really would enjoy! Although I didn't have monjayaki itself I did have a age-manju filled with monja in Asakusa and also had a oyster okonomiyaki that was delicious! Next time I'll have to stay longer then a month, there's many more things to try and cities to visit in Japan.

Amazing videos John, I’ve just watched all of your Japan videos to prepare myself for my holiday next month. Very informative and down to earth and you show us the long queues for restaurants/food stalls (which is good to know) I’ve added quite a few places you have visited into my travel plans considering I’m a foodie like yourself. You deserve more subscribers and views, keep up the great videos

That's really awesome to hear that you watched all of them! I'm glad that my videos are helping you and other travelers/foodies out! I hope you have lots of fun in your trip to Japan next month! I think one thing I didn't mention in my videos is that if you plan on using your phone a lot, I would get pay to get a simcard or pocket wifi rental (probably better if you have multiple people) to bring around while you are there. Before I went I was doing tons of research I found that a lot of people said that you can get free wifi at many places, which is true. However majority of them are all password protected where you need to find the login details or you have to register, which is a hassle and that amount of time adds up if need wifi frequently. There's some Japan apps where you can download it and it says that you'll automatically have access to thousands of wifi spots, but many of those wifi spots have small ranges and you have to spend extra time walking to those places to be in range. There's a chance that the free wifi situation has improved these past two years when I went, however I think it probably didn't change much.

@@JohnQuach Yes thank you for the advice, I will be buying a simcard on the Klook app and picking it up at the airport. Can I ask when you went to Tsuta/Nakiryu restaurants in Sugamo. What else is there to do in the area apart from the Rikugien gardens?
@JohnQuach

@@fai888 When I was there it was pretty early and not many restaurants/shops were open yet, so I just hung out at a cafe and edited some videos. There's a few other gardens that are somewhat nearby like Koshikawa Botanical Gardens and Kyu-Furukawa and I know there's a hot spring place nearby called Tokyo Somei Onsen Sakura. One of my family members told me that theres is a good bakery that you could check out BOULANGERIE TOAST if you wanted a snack.

coming from a japanese national, that list is pretty touristy and on the low end of budget side for sure. sushi places like midori and sushi dai aren't the cheapest places like sushiro or kura sushi, but they are considered budget/middle of the road in terms of clientele and quality and pales in quality to many of the michelin starred places or any high end sushi places. also, I wouldn't talk about ramen places being "the best in japan" and such unless you have eaten several hundred ramen bowls around japan. that's a bold statement coming from someone who's only spent a month in tokyo. i have eaten at most of the places on the list but none would be in my top 10.

I'm coming to Japan this December luckily I came across this video, good job man. However I'm gonna bring my 4 year old son and I'm excited to try those ramen and sushi places but those places seem so small and only have seats in front of the cook. Is it possible to bring my 4 yo to those places
@JohnQuach
@JohnQuach 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not too exactly sure on this answer since every restaurant is different but from what I experience I would say for this list I would say #10, 9, 8, 5, 3 would probably be okay to bring your kid too. I'm not sure if your kid needs a kids seat, but some of the restaurants are indeed small and may not have kid seats available. I would say your best bet is to check out tabelog and look up some restaurants and look at the pictures for more spacious restaurants. There's tons of good places in Tokyo so don't worry if you can't hit up some of the places that I went too. Here's some other ramen shops that are a bit more spacious that are a bit more accommodating with kids that I liked, Afuri (multiple locations) and Ramen Yukikage in Asakusa that you might want to check out.

Are these good places to eat at for a newbie foodie? Like first timer who wants to try something new to get their feet wet in Tokyo? Or do you have to have a true Japanese palette to appreciate these places you've suggested?
@JohnQuach
@JohnQuach 4 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say since everyone's palate is a bit different, but if you are not a picky eater or have a lot of dietary restrictions etc.., I think you would enjoy most of these if you never had Japanese food before. For #8 if you wanted to experience some true tea ice cream you should definitely visit. For #5 if you don't like seafood too much you could probably skip this place. For #04, #01, and Sushi Dai, I would say it would be hard to justify for a new person not familiar to Japanese cuisine to truly enjoy, since the wait times can be extremely long or out of the way from main tourist spots in Tokyo to make the trip worth it. This is a compilation of my favorite spots from my trip, but I also have a lot of videos of other restaurants that I visited in Tokyo that you can check out. If you have more questions feel free to ask!

@aikawa1985
@aikawa1985 4 жыл бұрын
Tomita is really good as well; There are many ramen restaurants in japan and everyone has their own favourites. Similar to Tsuta it's a ticket based system and small seating which is common to many restaurant in Japan I encounter.
@JohnQuach
@JohnQuach 4 жыл бұрын
I didn't go to Tomita Ramen, but just looking at the Tabelog reviews its a 4.09 and I'm sure its really good. Everyone has their own favorites and palate is a different, but whats good about tabelog from what I experienced any restaurant with a score higher then 3.5 is going to be really good. for lets say 90% who go there and 10% who may think that they just thought it was okay or didn't like it. A score with 4+ is usually a place that is phenomenal from what I experienced.

@JohnQuach
@JohnQuach 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not too sure about the lineup process now, but I do know that it should be faster. There's like 3x or 4x more seats than the original so the wait should be better then before. That's unfortunately I'm not sure if you are allergic to fish/seafood and how severe it is or if you don't like it in general, but if so you might want to avoid are soup/broth dishes sauces that may have some kind seafood component to it if you do want to visit Japan. I would say though Japan has a lot of other good choices, like Italian/French food, meat dishes, curry, bbq, fancy wagyu/kobe burgers, desserts and more. Especially in Tokyo I generally found that places do have english menus so you can read what is in the dish. Besides the food though there's a lot of cool things to visit and do if you like Japanese culture or if you just want to experience it.

Almost all the places except for #06 I believe didn't have a English menu, but that's just because they only serve 1 thing on the menu. Many place in Tokyo have one if you ask the staff at the restaurant. Hello, 🌷🌷🌷🥀🥀🥀🌻🌻🌻May I share an Old Testament Verse with you from Daniel 7:14 "And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a Kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should SERVE Him; his dominion is an Everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom shall not pass away, and His Kingdom that which shall not be destroyed." Also, can I share Isaiah 53:5 " But HE was WOUNDED For our TRANSGRESSIONS, he was BRUISED for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His STRIPES we are HEALED." God the Father loves you so much that He sent Holy Sinless Jesus (His Holy Son) to earth to be born of a virgin.Then, to grow up and die on a cross for our sins. He was in the tomb for 3 days, then Father God raised Holy and Sinless Jesus Christ (Y'shua) to Life! He appeared to people and went back to Heaven. We must receive Sinless Jesus sincerely to be God's child(John 1:12).After we get saved by grace through faith in Christ, if we truly love the Lord Jesus Christ, then we will obey Jesus(John 14:15). Mark 1:15 "And saying, the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: Repent ye, and believe the gospel." Jesus said in John 14:15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments. "There's a real hell. It says in Revelation 21:8 "But for the cowardly, & unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, & immoral persons sorcerers & idolaters & all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire & brimstone..." Please sincerely receive Holy Jesus and put your true faith and trust in Him today and please repent. Will you have a Real encounter with Holy Lord Jesus (Y'shua is His Hebrew Name) and stay in a Genuine relationship with Him daily please?
