Kevin is definitely a genius. He is insanely talented and that's an understatement. He went to Yale Freaking University, he speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese, and he can not only play the cello, piano, and saxophone, but he was giving actual concerts before he hit puberty! Child prodigy for sure. And I've heard that he's one of the nicest people you could ever meet and I totally believe that. He fit in PERFECTLY with Pentatonix. He was studying at Yale to be come a doctor. He is not a doctor, but he heals everyone's souls with his music.

Kevin and Avi roomed together in the early days. Kevin has stated he didn't sing much prior to Pentatonix, but AVi gave him lessons and like with everything...he excelled!! It is my understanding that Kevin is listed as one of the top beat boxers in the world.

There's a lot of variety on Kevin's KZfaq channel (KO -- Kevin Olusola). The earliest videos go back to his college days when he was experimenting with celloboxing. There are covers of classical and pop music, some with beatboxing, some with other musicians. Later there is more celloboxing, looping and a series of short autobiographical videos. When when Pentatonix begins to get successful, you see him in this studio (I assume at home). Then songs from his EP, including his original, "Renegade". And once the baby came in 2021 he has only had time for shorts. 😄 For some celloboxing / looping, try the Sam Smith "Stay With Me" KOver. And definitely check out "Renegade"

I went to my concert last night!! I was totally blown away by all of it, but as someone who played violin for many years and tried to learn cello, I agree with you, I am in sheer awe of what he can do with that instrument. Seeing it right in front of me with my own eyes, undescribable. Not to mention his angelic voice and just how musically smart he is!

Kevin's performance video for "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" is my current music obsession." His KOver of "All Of Me" is mesmerizing. It's all cello, no singing. The only thing better than Kevin on cello is 4 Kevins on cello, playing the same song. It's beautiful.

While in China he was both beatboxing and playing the cello and a professor mentioned to him why don't you combine the two and thus cello boxing was made. He speaks fluent Mandarin graduated from Yale pre-med prior to joining Pentatonix. The other members of Pentatonix I heard were a little hesitant to speak to him at first because he is so smart. He has the best laugh anywhere. And there are interviews on KZfaq with him one of which is fairly new.

Another great reaction. Thank you. I, myself, can't pick a favorite group member any easier than a favorite song. I love and appreciate all of them. Not to take anything away from Kevin...but as much as you admire his talent and skill on the cello...have you ever heard 2Cellos play? They are a Croatian cello duo. Their cello playing affects people the way PTX singing affects people. Pure shock and awe. Once you hear them you'll be hooked, again. Their career kinda runs parallel to PTX (got together in 2011, KZfaq videos, sold-out concerts, albums, etc.) but rumor has it they are "retiring" at the end of this year. I keep my fingers crossed that someday they might record a song or two with PTX. Or at least collaborate with Kevin (Cello Trio) on an album and some videos. What can I say...I'm a dreamer.

Great reaction and Kevin is AMAZING (was accepted to Yale medical school and speaks Mandarin), but joined Pentatonix instead !! I think I recommend this before, but another phenomenal percussionist is a guitar player named MARCIN...you really need to react to him. He is now a 22/23 year old kid from Poland and has his own KZfaq channel. He appeared on AGT and was SENSATIONAL...but I would suggest you start with his video of "High Fidler' (Tommy Emmanuel), when is was 15...which you will get why he is a "genius". He has a long playlist, but that would warrant you to check out his other videos (P.S. he also has one of Metallic's "Master of Puppets") !!!

Kevin has been the featured instrument player at Carnegie Hall TWICE! The first time when he was 17 he was featured playing the saxophone, and later featured playing the cello. Here's in 2005 on the program "From the Top; Live at Carnegie Hall" on PBS; kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mc1dirSdmL-nho0.html He is a world class cello player and plays the cello on a number of Pentatonix videos. Listen to Pentatonix "Shallow" to hear him on cello. After he graduated from Yale pre-med school he went to China and became fluent like a native in Mandarin. He decided to forego medicine and pursue music.
