Thanks for the vid. Just a note: I really like when these videos have an actual visual representation of the tier list that you are creating at the end (or after each game). Much easier to remember what you gave everything that way.

If we judge this based on what is included rather than focusing on what was left out, this is a heck of a great mini console. Sure I’m missing a few (Zero Wing!) but I’m still buying.

I already pre-ordered it. Honestly, for this being a second release I think the selection of games is pretty good. The only thing else I would really want is Aladdin and Eternal Champions CD.

To grade ECCO the Dolphin on the same level as Sewer Shark and Night Trap is almost as hurtful as Sewer Shark and Night Trap being added to the Genesis 2 Mini lineup. Seriously though, the CD version of ECCO has an awesome soundtrack plus 5 or 6 more levels, and some small fmv easter eggs.

Ecco is a tough game to grade. The visual and audio experience of the time was like nothing on any 16 bit system. Its hard for me not to love these games just from that. I feel the same way about Genesis Virtua Racing, it made Star Fox feel like slow motion garbage.

As someone who didn’t grow up owning a Genesis it’s hard to find much to love about this selection of games. I’m really hoping to simply mod it and add all the licensed games that simply couldn’t be featured.

Ecco CD 1&2 are my two favorite games on any Sega system. The CD versions are superior to the genesis versions because they have completely revamped soundtracks, and mid level checkpoints that make the game’s difficulty far less frustrating. They also have a few fmv cinemas sprinkled throughout. Masterpiece games.

For me the ecco games are all about the vibes. The CD quality audio really elevates the atmospheric/psychedelic soundtrack of the game.

Since Sega includes Ecco in just about every Genesis collection, I’ve tried to like it. Really. But I end up totally frustrated. Maybe I’ll give the CD version a try to see if that does it for me.

@@billcook4768 I would recommend cheating. the ecco games can be really frustrating, the biggest problem is the lack of checkpoints (CD games included additional Checkpoints, so they knew the game could be sometimes unfair) But even there if you find it to hard I would say just use save states and cheat your way through it. The gameplay is fluid and satisfying, and the story and vibes are really trippy and unique. I really think they are games worth experiencing even if not fully engaging with the difficulty.

Lunar Silver Star, Eternal Blue & Popful Mail were long shots due to Working Designs licensing but I really hoped for Snatcher cuz Konami’s CastleVainia & Contra titles were on the Model 1 mini, guess ESRB would have been an issue? Still some solid titles (Crusader of Centy is amazing!) but Model 1 offerings were much better. Still grateful and definitely getting this

I think the reason that we got Castlevania and Contra on the mini 1 is because the company that did the mini 1 (M2) also did the Castlevania and Contra anniversary collections for Konami, so perhaps they were able to talk them into letting both of these games be on the Sega collection as well.

Mostly because the rights holders always demand too much money, that is why we dont get releases of the stuff. Its like Harmony Gold and their BS with robotech.

It’s not even Working Designs. They just published all those games. The IP holders are a mishmash of dozens of folks. But maybe that’s what you meant.

@@leeartlee915 That is inaccurate. There is a single intellectual property holder: Game Arts. The issue here is that the publishing rights to the SEGA CD version in North America are owned by Gaijanworks, which bought up all of the Working Designs publishing rights. The company can’t reach an agreement with SEGA or anyone else to bring these versions to new / modern platforms. I think that’s what the OP meant.

How is it there were no issues including them on the Japanese release? I heard Victor Ireland wanted too much for the translation rights and Sega didnt want to pay his price for a limited US release.

Great video as always John I am so getting this, I found the first mini not as good as this one looks. It also had a game I couldn't bring myself to play, Road Rash 2 and it was the only game my Dad played. He passed away in 2019 and I bought it a year later.

Anytime Gain Ground comes up, I'll say it every time that it remains my favorite Sega Genesis game. Grew up playing several of the early SNK fighters including Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, The King of Fighters '94, Samurai Showdown, Savage Reign, and World Heroes. Love them to this very day, in fact The King of Fighters '95 remains my all-time favorite fighter. Love Final Fight and Sewer Shark! Always picked Guy but occasionally picked Haggar too, never was a fan of using Cody for some reason. Had the SNES adaptation of Clay Fighter.

Great Tier List, John! It's such a killer lineup of games that I"m so glad many people will get the chance to properly play now, especially Shining Force CD and Crusader of Centy. Though we vastly differ on our thoughts on Atomic Runner, but that's okay. :p

Atomic Runner is one of those games that has lost its luster over the years, but it was really fun when it was released. I still have a lot of love for it, but I can understand if players who didn't spend time with it back in the day have a hard time getting into it. I am really glad that we got Crusader of Centy, but they really should have included Dark Wizard to round out the lack of the Lunar games. It's a really good SRPG that feels very different from Shining Force. Very disappointed that we got Sewer Shark though; that's a horrible title. Fun to know it was a pack-in; I assume for the Sega CD 2. My original Sega CD didn't include Sewer Shark. Fun detail about Hellfire: it's good to tell how accurate the emulation of the Genesis sound chip was implemented. Even the Sega Genesis 2, using the original cart, couldn't properly play the soundtrack.

I'm disappointed the two Lunar games aren't included, but I'm extremely happy to see Shining Force 2 joining Shining Force CD. I'm also happy to see they're including a Strike game, which I didn't think would happen, since it's an EA title.

Of the 2 Sega Genesis Shining Force games, 2 was my entry point with Super Mario RPG to the RPG games (tactical or not), and the CD ports of Gaiden 1 and 2 (which this is the only legal way to play the 1st Gaiden game, as the 2nd we actually got it's original Game Gear version) that includes a 3rd story bonus is really a welcome adition to me, I definetly will get this model 2 (especially for the Sega CD games as I don't have the addon, and I don't have the proper flashcart to not use the addon anyway).

I can't believe that they put Robo-Aleste but not its predecessor, M.U.S.H.A. on the Genesis Mini 2. I've never played Sewer Shark and I have a Sega CD but the pack-ins that I got were that Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective "game" (where nothing you did seemed to affect the plot) plus Sol-Feace and that Sega Classics disk with Streets of Rage, Revenge of Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Columns. Plus that CD+G sampler CD and another weird music CD.

I was pretty young when Mortal Kombat and Night Trap were getting a lot of attention for it’s violence. I grew up on the Texas coast where hardly anybody lived and cable wasn’t available. I wasn’t familiar with FMV games and when I saw clips of Night Trap on the news, it blew my mind. It must have been around the time Brainscan was released, I remember thinking that it must be like the game in the movie. It was pretty disappointing when I finally played it.

Sega really didn't read the room correctly by leaving off Lunar and Popful Mail. If you have a Genesis, do yourself a favor and get a MegaSD, it may not be "official" but you'll have the ability to play every Genesis/Sega CD game on original hardware.

Aside from Lunar, Snatcher, etc. the biggest disappointment with both the original and mini 2 is the complete lack of any sports games!! If there was one thing that the Genesis excelled at, it was amazing sports titles! I get EA sports might be tough but they had so many classic in house games like Holyfield Boxing, Tommy Lasorda baseball, Patrick Reilly basketball, Joe Montana Sports talk football. It’s unreal how they glossed over their sports game legacy twice now

Popful Mail is whatever. Lunar, Snatcher and Quackshot are the glaring omissions. Final Fight CD can kick rocks. Who wants that when Capcom Belt Action Collection exist? It's arcade perfect.

Space Harrier I and II were remade with the "what if" of Genesis having super scaling abilities. That was the only what-if addition to the hardware and the rest is done using the capabilities of Genesis, hence that's why you have so much sprite flicker as it's pushing the system to the max... Sega and M2 really went above and beyond giving this ultimate fan service.

I'm glad people are excited about these, and I definitely own more than one mini console. But who didn't emulate this stuff over the last 20 years? We just like to give the money away when we can, I guess that's part of gaming.

I’ve never emulated anything. I also have never used a pc. Bought anything Microsoft and only buy physical games, movies and music. Never paid for 1 digital rental. I peaked in knowledge about technology about 1995. All down hill since. I’m an analog dinosaur and I’m ok with that. My car is virtually theft proof because less than 2% of people can drive manually and is considered the best anti theft option. So it’s saving me money.

The rights holder for the Working Designs games wanted royalties to get Lunar & Popful Mail on the mini console. I blame Sega of Japan since they said that it wasn’t worth it. Disappointing to say the least, but it’s an ok lineup. I may just get the Japanese Mega Drive Mini & learn Japanese for games like Captain Tsubasa. I’d say that we’ll get another Sega Genesis Mini with 32x games.

Love toaplan shoot em up games. Atomic Runner is good, but takes time to get used to controls. Ranger x is best played with a 6 Button controller.

Final Fight CD has better graphics, has a remastered fully composed soundtrack, also is a 2 Player game. The SNES version was stripped down even more than just Guy it was 1 player only. In its day the Sega CD version was amazing.

Between this and the Mini 1, prrrrrrretty much every Genesis game I wanted to see represented, is. I don't know how Sega couldn't get Mortal Kombat when AtGames managed it, and I think the Mutant League games were MADE for the Mini's, but I totally didn't expect to see Night Trap and Sewer Shark and I'm glad they're here. Considering a purchase.

I think they are avoiding putting violent games like Snatcher and Mortal Kombat to avoid getting an M-rating attached to it. You do not want to release a mini console for general audiences like this that is only recommended for ages 17+.

@@tonberrymasta That's a good point, that I didn't think of. Does MK carry an M rating? I was only going off if these titles were on Nintendo e-shop or not. Glad to see Splatterhouse anyway.

Hopefully you don't live in Canada or Europe cause the answer would be you don't buy this. But yeah, Amazon exclusive and enjoy that $22 shipping fee that you have to pay even if you're on Amazon Prime.

@@francescosmith7859 Exactly. I'm skipping this one and will enjoy the games I own on their native consoles. For the games I don't own, there is emulation. Before anyone says anything about emulation, that's all this mini console does anyways. An odroid or Raspberry Pi will cover what I'm missing.

No popful Mail, Lunar, etc... absolutely rediculous; especially when they'll be on the Japanese release. I'm seriously thinking about cancelling my pre-order at this point due to the rob job they did for the US/EU release. Chances are I may not even take it out of the box due to my mini 1 being modded with those titles already on it with the retroarch core (even though I'd prefer to use official means).

The guy that has the working designs rights. Has a massive grudge against sega. That is why so many working designs stuff never got a re release and they had to redo so much when they did the PS1 and PSP remakes. One guys massive grudge.

I bought the original Genesis mini for $50 at Target. With Project Lunar I installed the games I wanted directly into the console (no usb sticks, otg cables, etc. hanging out). My Genesis Mini feels superior to this both aesthetically and substantially. Sonic CD is the only CD title I care for. I just can’t justify buying this. I’ve even installed a few 32x games and they’re great. I hope whoever does buy this gets plenty of enjoyment from it though.

I owed a copy of Ecco 1 for the Sega CD. Outside of the enhanced soundtrack, the Sega CD game actually does have a few more additional stages not found in the Genesis game.

I'm weird as I prefer the 3 button over the 6 button controller for Street Fighter. Probably because it was all I had growing up and it is what I am used to. The 6 button just feels weird.

I can understand that, I prefer the 6 button controller over the 3 one, but somehow I was able to enjoy it despite the hassle of pressing start to switch between punches and kicks, but that's part of how each player adapts, if you pretty much played games with the 3 button, it will be hard to adapt to the 6 button one, a personal experience example with that and my bros. comes with Smash Bros. Brawl and 4 on it's WiiU version, I somehow got the ability to play the game with the Wiimote solo + Nunchucks + Classic Controller (excluding the Game Cube controller for obvious reasons) while my bros. never could play it without the Game Cube controller because they felt awkward using the other controller settings, and on the Smash 4 days they just couldn't never understand how I was able to beat them and my cousins with my trusty Old 2DS and N3DSXL with much ease.

I'm so much more interested since Herzog Zwei is on there. It's my favorite. Put so many hours into it there is just so much depth. I've been doing research on games like it an action rts genre. Allegedly Raid on bungling Bay for nes was an inspiration. While Air Mech, Supreme Commander, Brutal Legend, and Overlord provide that action and strategy mix.

For me, i already have a good chunk of these. I can see how somebody that doesn't or just wants a nostalgic injection, here you go. They still missed the mark in my book. No Popful, Lunar, Snatcher, Keiyo Flying S. and Eliminate Down is a crime. Clayfightwrs? WHY?

Those extra games looked poor too. I would have preferred they translated some Japanese exclusives like Hybrid Front. Personally I really want Take The A-Train translated. It’s an obscure one, I know.

@@darkhierophant4914 well. The fmv games are kind of curios. I tried playing them but found the timings a bit unforgiving and they’re not really games, lets be honest. It’s just quick time events. I didn’t enjoy them personally. I think if fmv would be put to good use it would be gallery shooters. There’s quite a few. But they are all just moving a reticle, with really stiff movement too. If they could get those fmv gallery shooters working with light guns then that’s cool. But then you need a crt tv I just remembered. I would put in scaling games like BC Racers or Battlecorps. I would say Soulstar but the controls have input lag and the second level is impossible.

Is Herzog Zwei like the precinct assault mode in Future Cop LAPD? Or like a MOBA? I remember this game when I was young but even though I knew like 10 people with genesis's, nobody had it so I never got to try it lol

All you had to do with Warsong is tell folks that's a localization of the OG Langrisser 1. Anyone with reason to give a damn will know what you're talking about :) Also the first game I know of with Noriyuki Iwadare music

So that's all the games we have for the New Genesis Mini, but it sucks that no Snatchers and Sonic 3 & Knuckles are on the list.
