My first NES was a generic clone manufactured in Brazil, compatible with japanese cartridges, and one day my dad comes home with a new game - SNOOKER POOL. Yeah, I know, it doesn't make much sense, but as your video popped up I came to see if I could recognize it among the others. Turns out it was Lunar Pool all the time! I played Ultima to death. I had heard about the games on computer but I didn't have a computer. I managed to get to Exodus but couldn't defeat him. The Ultima series was MASSIVE in Japan. Both Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy were started as attempts to see if an Ultima style game could even be done on the NES. And from that we have the entire JRPG genre. It all started with Ultima.

If you wanted to get into a game like Zannak, the sister game Gunnak is absolutely amazing, and feels like practice for when they made Blazing Lazers. I actually recommend trying Gunnak, Blazing Lazers, and Space Megaforce (Super Aleste) in that order to see how that branch of their shooters evolved along side their other varieties.

One of the cool things about Lunar Pool is the different table designs that you can actually select without having to beat or unlock them, plus you can change the "gravity" which affects the ball physics according to how much or how little gravity you use. It's definitely not your average pool game.

I'm really looking forward to your coverage of the KOEI games. I know strategy games are not your taste, but I really hope you take your time with it and give them all a "I'm 12yo, and this is the game I rented for the weekend and I'm super sick of all the games I own" try. I really love the depth/immersion of these games... and while they have ENORMOUS learning curves, there is something to appreciate in all of them. Also... when it comes to box art... every single KOEI release box art sells the game. I'm sure there are a lot of people that were in your boat... that were enraptured by the box art, then got home and realized... "damn, this isn't my kind of game".

@@dangunheadachron1603 To each their own... I'm looking at he game series through the eyes of a kid that was maybe 10-13 when these games released. I don't think anyone... say, in their 20's or even early thirties would give these the chance they deserve... and I can hardly blame them. They aren't pretty, they are incredibly complicated and its hard to have the patience for an 8bit game these days, especially if strategy games already isn't your thing. I get it.

Zanac was the prototype for what became the Aleste series (M.U.S.H.A., Space Mega Force, Power Strike 1 & 2 etc). It's one of the very best 8-bit shmups there is period. Probably the only thing on the NES (not Famicom, Rekka is nuts) that matches its intensity is its sequel, Gun-Nac. One of the few true standouts in the genre on the system, I'd definitely rank it well above all that middling stuff.

I played Dr Chaos again this weekend. I've beaten it several times over the years, and it holds up. The controls are a bit stiff and the hit boxes take some getting used to, but the structure of the game is cool, the atmosphere is awesome, and it definitely deserves a place as a formative survival horror game. It's just a bit cryptic for its own good to a new player who doesn't know where to get the warp zone detector. The game is really neat if you get past that hurdle.
