I wanted to convince myself it was good so bad when I was a kid. Xmen were cool, Nintendo was cool, this game had to be rad as hell, I must just be bad at it... I eventually traded it to a friend's cousin for Star Tropics, so I guess it was a pretty good purchase

I loved the X-Men so much and I was so hyped about getting this game. I was terribly disappointed and even more so with my favorite xman being the worst character in it. Wolverine was atrocious. No ranged attacks, basic attacks and slow. I think he slowly healed but it doesn't matter when you are at the mercy of gates and a timer when you beat a boss. I wanted to like this game but I just couldn't.

When I was a kid, I made it my mission to beat every NES game I came across...That mission ended when we rented Karate Kid. I had gotten soooo close, but ended up rage quitting before rage quitting was ever coined as a term. Recently, I fired it up to try again...Didn't make it 5 minutes into the game, and I'm like nope...not going to happen.
@Marc_Araujo

I beat the Karate Kid multiple times as a kid. The trick is to cheese the enemies that pop up and get them to either run past you by switching levels or by getting three of them to constantly chase you which keeps new enemies from spwning ahead of you and you can just rush to the end, as long as you keep enough distance from them.

It's nice to see some love for Friday The 13th. I honestly think it's unfairly panned, and if it had been put out by ANY other publisher, it would be recognized - at least - as an incredibly ambitious, if flawed, ancestor of the survival horror genre. The open-ended gameplay is particularly impressive, by third gen standards. The player is given a huge amount of freedom to explore strategies and find their own way through the game, and you really didn't see that in most NES games.

Games like Jaws and Nightmare on Elm Street provide fond memories because I simply owned them. Its like you said - back then you played a game because you had it. I remember getting Nightmare on Elm Street at a yard sale for $1 loose cartridge and recently seen it loose at a pawn shop for $50 (Canadian). The owner explained the AVGN episode boosted its value, and he also told me it retains value because its the ONLY Nightmare on Elm Street video game out there. Is that true?

Good list, John! I would actually encourage you to take the time to play Thrilla's Surfari a bit more because it really is a solid game. I rented it back in 1992 when it was new so I certainly have that nostalgic attachment to it but it is genuinely good once you get a feel for the controls/gameplay and nuances within the game such as collecting coconuts (gives you more tries in the bonus game so that you can get extra lives) and what not. It's the one LJN game I own if that means anything. ;) I do agree with you on Jaws because that game is so simple yet it's a fun little gem. I had a lot of fun with Punisher as a kid. Was also a huge X-men fan so very angry when I rented the X-Men game.

So many missed opportunities with the movies based games. I get the feeling during the nes days some games they just took a stock games and just slapped a movie title on it and called it a day.

Ljn had all the good movie titles for games and they messed it up. I wasted a lot of time on some cause of the title and box art 😂

Mostly agree with these. I'd probably bump up Karate Kid and Alien 3 as they're 2 of the best playing LJN games, knock down Jaws a rank due to it being very repetitive and Roger Rabbit due to it being very confusing, my list would probably be like yours otherwise.

I have good memories of T&C Surf Design 1. At least, the skateboarding parts. Never played NES T2. Wonder how it compares to the GB game - which I owned and enjoyed as a kid.

Woah, dude, come on tc surf is my favorite nes game of all time. The replayability or soothing sound of the waves crashing in the title screen should at least get a B rank. Not to mention the rad box art and manual illustrations. And as someone from the pnw surging is most def a thing. All other ranks were accurate though. Great vids 🤙🏻

The only part I must respectfully disagree with is Nightmare on Elm Street. Cannot be stressed enough, but while it was distributed by the Rainbow of Doom, it was crafted by the very capable hands of the one and only Rare. This game was a really solid platformer for its time. It had great jump mechanics for an NES game. Another cool element was that, unlike a great many film adaptations on the early consoles, it stayed very close to its source material with its environments, its bosses (mostly), the sleep/"Zzz's" system, the Dream World versions of the levels, the Dream Warrior powers and so on. Just as well, in my opinion, this game had what was easily some of the best music in the NES library. For me, it's an "A" rank on this one. The only things stopping it from being a home run for me are the placement of some of the infinitely respawning enemies (and their hasty respawn times) and the strange, out-of-place "slippery/ice environment" movement mechanic. I love this game, though, and I go back and play it quite often.
