It's always challenging when you visit any city for the first time to decide on where exactly you want to stay. This video highlights my 5 favorite districts to stay in Taipei. The characteristics of each district are highlighted to make it easier to decide which one suits you best.
Technically Taipei Main Station is not a district but falls in Zhongzheng but I think it's better to use Taipei Main Station when you're searching for hotels and other retail or services.
The districts fall in order of transportation convenience with number 1 Taipei Main Station being the best and Xinyi District the area furthest away. Taipei City is not that expansive so if you stay in Xinyi it will take you approximately 20 minutes to get to Taipei Main Station by MRT.
Zhongshan is convenient and has a some nice sites to visit including the Ningxia Night Market, Dihua Old Street, The Museum of Contemporary Art.
Daan is great for shoppers, foodies, bar hoppers, and some nice parks and neighborhoods to explore.
Ximending is the most energetic district with lots of choices for food, cafes, entertainment, street performers, and is completely safe even with the crowds that inhabit the place every night.
Xinyi is the most luxurious of all the districts with the best selection of 5 star hotels, international restaurants, Chinese/Taiwanese fine dining, and the best Japanese food. Bars, hot nightclubs and one of the best selections of luxury goods stores in East Asia.

Hi John, I'm convinced to bring my family of 4 to stay close to the Taipei Main Central MRT Zhongzheng district. We'd love to walk and I checked everything around this area... wow, just a quick walking distance from here. Chiang Kai-shek memorial, Longshan temple, Ximending... Thanks John

I plan to stop at Taipei Taiwan for 5 to 10 days before heading back to Toronto from Philippines this coming November 2024 God willing. Is it November a fair month to visit? Thanks a lot ..

Debating between 2 options, being half way between Zhongshan and Taipei Main Station, within walking distance of Ningxia night market or between Ximen and Taipei Main Station, that way we are close to the red, green and blue line. Which of these 2 areas would be best to explore by foot? Is Ximen anything like Kowloon in HK? We didn't quite like how crowded it was, thanks! Love your videos, straight to the point, also, you somehow reminds me of Harrison Ford lol

Haha thanks very much! Being near Ningxia Night Market also puts you close to Historic Dihua Street and there is lots to explore by foot around there. Shops, cafes, restaurants, and although it sees it’s fair share of people at the night market and on the weekends it’s not as busy or crowded as Ximen. Staying between Main Station and Ximen is super convenient and there’s lots of great local food and snacks you can get around the old town. Ximen is more fun and lively with lots of street performers and convenient if you want to check out a movie. I personally don’t think Ximen is like Kowloon but it is very crowded especially on the pedestrian only streets in the afternoon and evening. They’re both great options. What’s your preference?

David Tran yes most definitely! Lots of places to stop, take rests, eat, drink. Generally speaking Taipei overall is pretty family friendly.

I will be on Taipei in 2 weeks , im considering getting an air b&b in Daan area near the big park. I like walking, taking pictures and video. Walking at night. Is this a good neighborhood for that?

Fernando Parra yes Da-an is a very nice neighbourhood! Da-an Park is considered the lungs of Taipei. Lots of trees, shopping and lots of restaurants nearby!

I was considering a place to stay near Longshan temple. Looked more interesting in google steeet view than Da an. The temple and neighborhood looks like an ideal place for photography and video oportunities. Is the area safe for walking at night or early morning with my camera?

Fernando Parra it’s more sketchy than other areas in town but you should still feel safe. It’s definitely one of the most interesting neighbourhoods and one of my favorite places for photos.

I am really having a difficult time looking for hotels near Taiwan airport John. :( I was asked to book for 3 accommodations. Here's what we need on the following dates: May 13-16 Hotel near airport with pool or hotspring resort May 16-20 Hotel near markets (I am thinking Daan District from your video hehe) May 20-24 Hotel near airport again with event hall for birthday celebration Please help me with any 3-star hotel that is also budget friendly :) I would love to hear it from you :) Thank you very much!!!!

Hi Kaira, there aren't any hotspring resorts near the airport. The closest one would probably be an over 1 hour drive or longer. But if you do want to stay in a hotspring resort Beitou is the most convenient hot springs location in Taipei City. Daan is a nice area to stay. The closest popular nightmarkets would be Raohe or Linjiang(Tonghua). I'm leaving you a link to Agoda.com.They are an affiliate of my website. You can search here, I find this the best hotel search site for Taiwan and East and Southeast Asia. The rates are very competitive, sometimes better than booking directly with the hotel. This was the case for myself 2 years ago staying at an Ibis Hotel in Insadong Seoul. Hana Lee some night market stalls take a break during the holiday but most are open. Perhaps New Year's Eve they will close early.

Verabaglady Uwakonye you can either go to the bus counters, they are clearly marked and just say Taipei Main Station and they will sell you a ticket for one of the frequent buses or you can take the airport MRT, clearly marked that operates from approximately 6am-11pm.

Hi! It's easy to go to the main station when you're arriving in the morning till early evening. You can just go to the bus counters and there's a lot of available bus that would take you to Taipei Main Station. Also, the train is available as well. However, if you're arriving past 12mn you could only take the 1819 Bus. Last stop is at Taipei Main Station. Hope I helped!

Sir John, we will be arriving at 1AM in Taoyuan Airport Terminal 1. We are due to check in at Hotel Fun Linsen. Please help how do we get to Linsen, Zhongshan the cheapest way. Bus 1819, I heard should be running every hour from 1-5AM? Do I get off Taipei Main Station or Mackay Hospital? Thank you Sir!

MacKay is close enough or Ambassador Hotel. You can also take one of the private bus company buses for NT$125 that stop at the Ambassador Hotel.

Mary Cris Manlangit Ximending falls in Wanhua District but it’s very different than The Longshan Temple/Snake Alley area of Wanhua.

Mary Cris Manlangit if you want to find a place to stay in Ximending use that in your filter or simply find a hotel that’s close to Ximen MRT Station.

What is street crime like in Taipei? Are pickpockets and scams common in tourist areas?
