Take a trip in a modern electric train from Wellington to Johnsonville along part of the original New Zealand North Island Main Trunk railway line. This was a difficult line for heavy steam hauled express trains with many tunnels, tight curves and steep gradients. The main line has been re-routed along an easier alignment today leaving a stub of the original main line to carry commuters from the attractive suburbs into Wellington.

The Johsonville line was actually the original line into Wellington. It was constructed by the private Manawatu-Wellington railway company in the 1890s. The Johnsonville line was bypassed by the NZR with a new alignment and tunnel slightly further north in the late 1930s. As can be seen in the video, the terrain is fairly rugged and the line couldn't cope with the heavier axle loadings of the new larger steam locos coming on stream at that time. As can be seen at the end of the video, the old alignment is now covered by a supermarket. The 'new' line is just beyond the supermarket.

The history of the Johnsonville line is fascinating, even quite recently it was host to the old English Electric Units. I can imagine it was a devil of a line to operate when it was part of the NIMT. The staff on the railway are really friendly and outside the peak hours they have always got time to recount a few stories.

Great video Tim. I fled the confines of TranzRetro before the Martangi units arrived so it’s interest to see the changes in track layout and platforms. There’s less track damage due to wheel spin than I expected. As usual, keep up the good work. 😃

Hi DB thats-me, I rode the line back in the days of the English Electric Units, they certainly made a lot of improvements before introducing the Matangi Units, the track and stations look really good now, although I miss the old units, they often ran back a little when the brakes were released before the motors got the units moving in the right direction, plus there was a forward view for a limited number of passengers. Back here in the UK I visited my first steam railway gala in 6 months today, it was nice to get out into the countryside and watch 6 beautifully restored engines in action.

A little insight and technique to the red sets on j’ville line. Due to the steepness of the line, up to 1in 33, they were made up in groups of two with the motor coach on the down hill end. N.B. Those used on the flat lines were trailer-motor-trailer consists. With the motor coaches being significantly heavier, their brakes were proportionally stronger. This meant they out braked the trailer coaches causing the consist to to come to a halt ‘stretched’. This meant that on releasing the brakes, the front coach would (on up hill stations) roll back into the draw-gear when lifting off. There are two ways to prevent this. The first, which was harder on the electrical switch gear, was to apply power with the brakes still relatively firmly applied. The motor coach would bunch up before the trailer coach could roll back. The other was to try and come to halt with just enough brakes applied to hold the train but soft enough that the the trailer would roll back on stopping. The little ‘set back’ motion was lost in the general forces of stopping. Have a happy day. 👍

Hi Scott, where possible I leave the noise of the driving cab in, unless the driver or guard is talking, then I use music. The train staff are not always aware that the camera records sound and I imagine they don't want the world to hear their private conversations. I live in West Sussex, England.

I recall a terrible accident that happened just out of the Khandallah tunnel back in the 60s where a car was hit by a unit on a private crossing, I think the feamle driver died and a baby survived. As a teen back then my mates got me to go into that tunnel from the Johnsonville end, a unit came through just as we got into the workmens safety hole.

I have a book about NZ railway accidents, unfortunately deaths on level crossings happened far too often, many involved collisions between milk lorries and trains. Must have been scary meeting a train in the tunnel, it was lucky you found a workmen's refuge as there is very little clearance between the tunnel wall and the train.

The platforms have been resurfaced to a high standard and new access bridges have been constructed, as for the length of the platforms, I don't know the answer other than to say that the trains of yesteryear were much longer than those serving the station today. It could be that only part of the platform was in use in your day whereas that whole platform is used today. I looked for an old photo and found this one, its not good, but the platforms can be seen. www.wellingtoncityheritage.org.nz/~/media/heritage/buildings/301-450/420/image4.ashx?mw=671&mh=415

I hope that you enjoy the best train in Queensland. . . . the Spirit of the Outback. Traveling first class with a sleeping berth, I hope! New Zealand is delightful, scenery wise and the three main trains are all worth traveling on. If you want a nice way to do those three trains, in ONE DIRECTION, fly to Greymouth, stop over, then take the TRANZ ALPINE to Christchurch, stop over, then the COASTAL PACIFIC to Picton. Ferry to Wellington and then the NORTHERN EXPLORER to Auckland. The trains are NOT cheap, but they are nice to travel on. They all have an open air observation car, to use for taking photos and of course videos.
