Since December of 2020, this old lefty went out and got a guitar. Stagg strat type. Since then, not liking how it was going with this first one, I set out to find out what I like. Thanks to Thomann and HB, I've bought a 335 type, an SG type, a jazzmaster type, 2 tele types (there's an old timer joke in there somewhere) and a gold top SC. I now know what I like as I've truly begun to cull the herd. This would never have been possible back in the 70s and 80s when I was young. And KZfaq is off the charts with lessons and guitar channels so it's a golden time.

Great list of 5 Better Than Ever Reasons for Guitarists! Things weren't that bad for gear in the 1970s, I bought a Framus 335 and Yamaki acoustic that were affordable and quite playable. My only audience now is my daughter (who creates music) and I record blues riffs for her. So I'm buying various gear to refine a blues tone we both enjoy. If I can find stock, in Canada supply is hit and miss for gear. BTW, dinosaurs did NOT go extinct, they are even more musical and flying free than in the 'old' days. Arf arf, Dougall!

Still a lot of competition out there, but if you enjoy playing and any of those things appeal to you Go for it

So true on many levels. My new pride and joy is Squier Classic Vibe 50s Telecaster. Bought on a whim and now I would never sell. An absolute joy to play it.

As a teenager in the mid-80s, I was lucky enough to pick up a battered--but otherwise perfectly playable--late-70s Ibanez Studio (it would presumably now be called a relic) and avoid the likes of the Satellite Les Paul. Still have it; the neck is really nice. But I was blown away by the quality of the Harley Benton Les Paul Jr copy I bought for €200. Having said that, my Columbus Jazz Bass knockoff isn't bad at all; maybe I just got a randomly good one. The other thing now is just the amount of information that's freely available. I tied myself in knots not realising that my favourite guitarists were using capos or alternate tunings.

Thinking back to my 1980 Peavey Decade, I think it's the same for quality affordable amps now as it is for guitars. It used to be so frustrating to try to learn a piece when you had no hope of matching the tone.

Good stuff John. I have to say that from late 70s to late 90s I had at least three gigs a week and lots of sessions. There were more places to play back ,then proper budget's for recording. Used to get royalties for songs too. I agree it's different now and opportunity's as opposed to who you know. I'm not saying it was better but definitely not over subscribed like today. My view as a Dinosaur.😁

I don't think any of the music shops make a Les Paul to buy for £80, I think the nearest are bolt on neck single cuts for about £100 but many have fender model copies for £80 or less which are probably better than the Satellite was new

@@JRobsonGuitar My first electric guitar was a Marlin sidewinder. It was all I could afford in my student days. I won't hear a bad word said about them.

Well, a lot of 60s bands didn't play on their records either. No wonder Jimmy Page was so busy.
