Are you kidding me?? Am I seeing and hearing this correctly? I thought I would NEVER see the day when this happened? Unbelievable really. Being the 1st Paramedic on OCFD and being on the Dept. for over 22 years this is Awesome! Just thought I wouldn't see this in my lifetime! So, is this in addition to EMSA response? TD Retired OCFD Major/Paramedic

@firedoc100 From my understanding this is additional to EMSA it's main purpose is to help with response when EMSA has a high priority of calls

Let’s be realistic here…hopefully this is finally the move to put EMS in the fire department and, if anything, have a private EMS service just for BLS and overflow. Up here in the Seattle area, every fire department, including the volunteer ones, runs EMS out of the fire department. Private EMS (Olympic Ambulance, AMR, etc) are the supplemental and long transport services. And the system works great. We have all wanted to see OKC and Tulsa go to this model. Hopefully this is the start of that.

Our EMS situation is odd. It is a “private” service but it is operated by a trust. The city governments of Oklahoma City and Tulsa are the trust owners. So even though it is “private” it is also a governmental division. Fire based EMS isn’t better or worse than the other ways handing it. What we need is true third service status with similar budgets and consideration as police and fire. Until then it will always be a compromise.

Hate that this is a full time only opening. I’d love to be a part of this new chapter of EMS in Oklahoma City. I just can’t make full time work… well it without being creative. Week on and week off would be great. Oh well, maybe one day. Maybe I should go to medic school while I wait.

Will EMSA still be the primary transportation for patients?

@LBCfirebuff from my understanding EMSA will still be the primary for transportation and overall they only have 4 medic units at this time and it's to help when EMSA is overwhelmed with medical calls.

Yes, EMSA will still be the primary transportation agency. We will be deploying four ambulances to assist EMSA during times of high call volumes.
