+Aaron thank you very much! The marking gauge is a kama keshiki and should be obtainable in the US. So no, I didn't make it myself :)

It appears that the morter tapers a bit from back to front. Is there a reason for this?

Yes, so it can only be inserted and taken apart in one direction.

i am building an outdoor kitchen & mostly rain & snow out here i have to used some of your Japanese connection technique because they lock very tight when this two woods join when they get wet, screws are useless & it will get the screws rusty very fast & wobbled by the wind in long term, i mean years of laying outside, thanks for sharing,. the lock i used would be round dowel wood,.

FAKE! The final pieces where not the same pieces as he was working on in the video. The final piece had chamfered edges while the pieces shown in the video did not.
