In this video, I demonstrate some of the basic techniques from the Joinville system of baton or great stick. This system was created by the French army in the mid 1800s, practised until WW2 and exported all over the globe. For ore info on French baton, please read my article: hemamisfits.co...

Hello Mr. Chouinard, as I’ve written to you in the past this short staff is very powerful and practical, and I don’t tire studying it. Do you have any immediate plans to demonstrate applications with a partner? Also, what are your thoughts on the Paulus Hector Mair Method (Mainly both palms down grip method). Lastly, do you see any advantage or disadvantage of both palms down method as opposed to alternate palm grip. It seems as if the Japanese jo method as married both of these grips. I would like to know what you think. Thank you.

I don't have the background in fencing/la canne, so I have a question that is admittedly born of ignorance: why would the manual want the practicioner to keep the back leg straight during a lunge? Seems as if, assuming the technique is to be implemented in actual combat, I would find it easier to allow the back leg to be "dragged" along when I step with the front, thus keeping the stance more ready for quick transition to another step. Is there another purpose I'm not seeing for it?
@maximechouinard8902
@maximechouinard8902 6 жыл бұрын
First off, I want to say that different systems use different footwork and manage to use it to their benefit. So there is no right or wrong application here. In regards to the lunge, let's look at it differently. If you would do a shuffling step forward, so with both legs moving at the same time, what would be the first motion as you try to retreat back? Probably an extension of your back leg. In a proper lunge, the back leg is already maintained in a position and distance where it can retreat to easily. This is one of the advantages of this type of footwork. Also, the whole French Army curriculum was built around the lunge, as soldiers trained in sabre, foil and savate. You are not going to introduce a completely different type of footwork for just one set of weapon as ti would be terribly counterproductive.

It could help if you started to rotate the hips more when thrusting and striking

Fighting Arts of England I am following what the manuals are showing and I am probably rotating the hips way more than they are.
@AngloSaxon1
@AngloSaxon1 6 жыл бұрын
I understand but in reality you cannot always take the manuals as gospel, it is about power and the way to generate power is with rotation

Maxime Chouinard then what’s the point ? If you cannot generate power or move properly then it’s worthless
