I agree! It is in general the best film about Bach and his time. The funniest thing is that in another 200 years, if we survive the next few, no one will remember Frederick the Great (his ego beautifully shown in this film) - unless in the context of Bach - and John Sebastian will continue to inspire, be played, interpreted and admired.

@user-fr4sv1hl7yАй бұрын

WOW! What a great scene! I would like to see the whole movie now. I loved how there was this pervading natural fear and respect shown towards Frederich der Grosse - the warrior king of Prussia. He was known to be a strict disciplinarian. One anecdote I particularly remember was concerning a Captain Zeithen who even after the King had ordered strict light discipline to be observed in the camp that night before battle, Zeithen kept a lantern lit to write a letter to his wife who was known to be a great beauty. The king calmly entered his tent and saw him writing. He told him to finish his sentence and then start another that he would dictate: "My dearest, I am sorry to say that I shall never see you again in this life. For tomorrow I go to the scaffold to be hanged." Bach could hardly refuse anything he asked including the Organ repairs. Realizing the movie was made for German audiences/consumption, I also appreciate the details of the king addressing the men of the court by "Monsieur" in French. It is a known fact that Frederich's own manuals on tactics were all written in French. His officers planed and collaborated in French, and only French was allowed to be spoken at Sans Souci - which I think is where they are supposed to be at??? or Charlottenburg? or some other town or palace within Brandenburg??? I wonder if Bach actually spoke French? Thanks for posting this awesome scene! Also thanks to Axel Bauer for the film information so that I can order it. I find I have a difficult time getting Euro DVDs to work in US machines. I always have to burn them into a different format on my own DVDs.

B: Via Halle, Your Majesty. F: That's a long way off. Well, I'm dying to get to know his art. He stands in contemplation of a piano? A Silbermann fortepiano. It plays loudly and quietly depending on how you treat it. Is it new to him, I hope? You don't know anything like that in Leipzig? B: Well, Silbermann... F: I have 15 of them, he should try them all. It is said that he masters the tricks of counterpoint with such perfection that he plays entire canons and fugues of his own free will, ala improvisation, in 2, 3 and 4 voices, as he pleases. B: You can learn it, Your Majesty. F: You can learn it, hmhmhm. He has humor. Is he giving me an example? B: May I ask Your Majesty for a theme, at Your Majesty's discretion. F: A theme, a theme? F: Clap, clap... F: And can he also perform this fugue in 6 voices? B: It's not that simple, Your Majesty! It doesn't just depend on the nature of the theme. It requires some preparation. F: Well, that's all for today. The soup will be ready. But he has to come back tomorrow! I have very nice organs in Potsdam, he has to try them all too. And show me more improvisation like that. I was told that those "musical victims" got their name from the difficult theme Frederic gave to Bach. The theme was very difficult to handle for Bach, so he actually sacrficed a good deal of his health to work the theme out. I've heard this in former east germay so I'm not sure if it is propaganda or the truth. Anyway: Bach is the geatest, his Air on the g string alone is enough to make him immortal. No patriotism from me as a german ;-) Beethoven once said: I'm a king myself, when he rejected a trashy ring from prussian king Frederic Wilhelm III. This ring was the wage for Beethovens 9th Sinfony, dedicated to Frederic Wilhelm III. In fact, Beethoven was a king himself, and so was Bach. German geniuses always compensated the german rabble.

I've never heard the "sacrificed his health" story before. Bach ended up making so much more of the theme (The Musical Offering) than the King requested that I suspect he enjoyed the chance to show off and that the story is a modern invention.

A version of the story that I've heard--it is probably only a surmise--is that the theme had been invented by Bach's son beforehand, who, with the king's approval, presented it to J.S. to test old Bach's skill, in the sense of either a joke, or showing him up, or showing him off--or all three.

King Frederick II was mocked by contemporary nobility for his simple clothing. He didn't like to put on airs.

Messieurs! F: Leaving the room... Clap, clap… B: Danke sehr.
