I love how everytime Ollie challenges the faith, Rev Chris explains how it is a personal experience rather than a standard to abide by and how each person is allowed to interprete his religion and be at peace. His lack of taking offense and absence of 'know-it-all' attitude shows his depth of understanding his own faith.
@blondetapperware8289
@blondetapperware8289 2 жыл бұрын
Well, there are standards in Orthodox faith, especially for Catholics. And though some can definitely abuse that, standards on their own are not a bad thing. There shouldn't be an ambiguous, personal way to interpret "Thou shall not kill." However, the way the priest answered with "I don't know" is actually consistent with church philosophy. There is the concept that sometimes, the breadth of an issue cannot be fully known during our time as humans because we just can't understand it with how we are now. That's where faith starts to come in and we have to trust that there is an answer God in all of His infinite wisdom has.

@vlo4829
@vlo4829 Жыл бұрын
Allowing each person to "interpret his [own] religion" generally leads people to just make themselves God and throw out whichever of God's teaching that are inconvenient for them. They give in to their vices rather than challenging them and trying to improve themselves in the places where it is least comfortable. It's like the "What Would Jesus Do?" thing in the 1990s. It sounds like a good thing to ask, but for many people, what "Jesus would do" was oddly the thing they already wanted to do and had committed to doing.

7:00 My priest growing up addressed this question this way: “Your parents could keep dressing, washing and feeding you all your life but if they do that you would never learn to do it yourself. In the same way, God could make all your choice for you and you’ll be always safe but then you would never learn your own strength. When he gave us free will he gave us a chance to shape our own life the way we want. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t care or doesn’t help, but sometimes only showing the way is the best help you can give”

I'm Christian, and one of my favorite quotes is from Gandhi when he addressed Christianity: "I like your Christ. I do not like Christians. You Christians are so unlike your Christ." In my opinion, if we truly followed Jesus's teachings of love and kindness and not judging others, we would be a lot more popular. Jesus was only really hated by religious and political extremists; the regular people loved Him.
@oncefortwice1389
@oncefortwice1389 2 жыл бұрын
@@martymohawk8360 but it’s not about being popular. And many people in the Bible, regular people, didn’t like Jesus either because they didn’t understand. God tells us that not everyone is meant to understand the secrets of the kingdom. And it’s the intention of judging that matters, not the actual action of doing so. We are called to judge one another in love and kindness, for that’s how we’ll be judged in turn. However, if we judge someone in bitterness or envy, that is also how we’ll be judged. It isn’t a matter of not judging bc that equates to a lack of discernment between right and wrong

We shouldn't ever "judge" one another. Instead, we should gently but firmly redirect every thought " that sets itself up against God's knowledge to the obedience of Christ"(2 Corinthians 10:5). We need to see things from someone else's point of view and help them through it using the love of God. We are to love the sinner, and hate the sin. God doesn't want us to be divided between ourselves over petty things like politics and whether or not to wear a mask or get the vaccine for COVID. God loves everyone and wants to see everyone genuinely love Him back and accept His son, Jesus Christ, as their personal saviour from sin, death, and Hell. Thanks, and God bless you from Ekalaka, Montana!!!❤

Rev. Chris is spot on. My daughter died from leukemia when she was 19. She was an amazing person who lived a life of love every day. At first I was devastated! I did battle with God! I lost! He found me, slowly and lovingly brought me back to Him, and helped me see that I don't get to spend the rest of my life WITHOUT her, I was privileged enough to spend 19 years WITH her. Yeah it really is a double edged sword. Teach it to people correctly, and they'll most likely turn out to be a good person. Teach it with too many mistakes. You get people like your parents. The people who boast about being a "true Christian" are most likely not even true Christians, far from it. I get so annoyed at those types of people, they shed Christianity in a bad light, one bad apple spoils the whole bunch.

I absolutely love that you're saying this. Almost all of my friends are atheists, and when one of them, who is gay, heard that I was Christian, asked me "So what's your opinion on LGBTQ+ rights?" and I was just astonished by how hearing that I was Christian immediately made the assumption that I was a homophobe. I'm definitely not, and hearing them think I'm completely different then I am just hurts me. There are so many people in the Christian community, especially Catholic, who don't follow God's blatant commands to respect others. A lot of people take the worst for an average because a steady uphill climb is less noticeable than a sudden drop. Also, people who are more negative are usually louder, because they want a change. I do disagree with you on saying that religion can teach "bad people" evilness because it's less about the person and more about how it's taught and the environment it's taught in. Everyone is broken, but we can make an effort to make ourselves better. I know personally that taking my religion more seriously made me a better person, and Christianity's real message can change the world for the better, if it's interpreted well. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't know how to interpret it. People who use religion as a scapegoat don't deserve to be considered religious. I'm talking about my past here as well as other people. I've been lucky enough to grow up in a loving Christian family who take God's Word to heart, and I'm sorry to hear that your parents treated you like that. I see other people, at my school especially, who call themselves Christian or Jewish but don't actually take any of the principles of their religions to heart. That's worse than being a bad person and an atheist, because by calling yourself a Christian, you are telling other people that you are making an effort to make the world a better place. I've been ranting about this for a while because this has been on my mind a while, especially recently, so thanks for reading if anyone is reading this. Just getting my thoughts into the world makes me a lot happier.
@stillnotstill
@stillnotstill Жыл бұрын
@@isaacfreiberg7609 Okay, being asked your opinion on LGBTQ+ people hurt you. I don't care that much. You're part of an organization that has done immense amounts of damage, and people are right to be wary. You choose to be part of that organization. I understand, because I used to be a born-again Christian, that it's a relationship, and you can feel called to be a Christian and feel like it's not a choice. I do get that. However, you are still standing with Christians. Instead of focusing on your hurt, ask yourself what are you doing to minimize the hurt done to others by the church. Because if you're going to be part of that organization, you have to do something about it in the way that you are capable. I'm not asking you to change the entire church. I'm asking you to move beyond your own hurt and recognize that people need you to stand up and do something to make a difference.

Hearing Chris be able to say he doesn't have all the answers, and that God's son died too and so he could be with a believer throughout both times, is so powerful. Talking about blame vs surrender has given me a whole new outlook on what those words mean and what is best of religious belief. I'm agnostic, but this kind of content and kindness and acknowledgement from Jolly and Chris of alternate beliefs/lifestyles/life position/privilege is so important. I live in a nice house with a family who loves me, with running water and aircon/heating and a good job - I know I am so lucky and privileged to be where I am. It's refreshing to hear a priest answer this sort of enquiry head on. It's not that people who suffer terrible tragedies do so because they are bad people. It's that despite what happens, God is beside them wanting good things for them and sympathising with their situation. That's lovely.

Yes exactly. I think ultimately there's bad in the world and that's the way it is. A lot of it is caused by humans. Which is beautiful tbh

I flipping love how you guys can have a fun, light hearted video, yet still talk of the really deep painful parts of life and make it seem normal and ok to talk about. My daughter died in 2015 and I've had a lot of "maybe God knew you weren't ready to be a mother", "God has a plan", "god needed her more" etc etc etc. Oli and Rev Chris hit the nail on the head, sometimes life is just not fair, but I don't think God planned for her death and I don't get how anyone thinks that could possibly be true . When Chris said about God guiding him though the hard parts, that really resonated with me. The chaplain who performed Annabelle's naming and funeral services also did just that. He didn't try to ignore it or pretend that our pain would pass, but held our hands through the darkest of times. I lost contact with him some years later, but will forever be grateful for his guidance and support. Gordon, wherever you are, thank you yet again for your love and understanding x

Hi Ollie. I'm a severely disabled person. I have spent the last 20 years of my life stuck in bed. A lot of that time I could not tolerate sound or light, so I couldn't do anything but lie there for 24hrs a day in the dark, doing nothing, day in, day out. I'll be honest and say that through some of my darkest times, God and I have had some difficult conversations (and by conversation, I mean, me screaming at him). You could say that my life is very unfair. I can't do any of the things I would like to do with my life. I've missed out on marriage, kids, personal freedom, even the most basic day-to-day life that most people take for granted. But do you want to know the truth? God is awesome. He fills my day with his love. He teaches me repeatedly how precious I am to him. He comforts me when I am down, he laughs with me when I laugh, (like when I am watching your videos). Every ounce of my pain he goes through and feels with me. Jesus holds me in his arms every day of my life. He has been my closest friend and companion. Life is very much not fair, but God is always good.

Beautifully said... As a christian youth, I've been struggling to deal with so many dark thoughts and circumstances surrounding me, no matter if it's suicidal thoughts, drug usage etc within my community that I was unaware of. A lot happened within these 2 years that marked a transition for a lot of us. But at the end of the day, God's unfailing love is the only source of authority that declared our freedom, became our stronghold and refuge during these darkest moments. There's so much ahead for all of us, and I am so excited for what God has in store. Your testimony brought a wash of light as I'm struggling to hold on to the truth, to be so bitter about everything and feeling incapable of making changes. This is a such a long cry😂But thank you so much. God bless you so much! And to whoever reading this, nothing but love :)))

I think only Chris is Christian of those three. But I might be mistaken. By the way he's not the only one. For example in the German speaking world the real live guys are kinda blowing up and they recently started being Christians and it only adds to their community.
