Jazz Night in America

4 жыл бұрын

Listen to the radio show: www.npr.org/2020/05/27/863412...
Jon Batiste spent his 33rd birthday playing an intimate, private concert with his band in the round while Jazz Night in America captured the show. He kept it classy, donning a suede jacket and playing selections from his two latest Verve releases, Chronology of A Dream and Anatomy of Angels.
You probably know Jon Batiste as bandleader and musical director on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. But his credentials are deep as the roots of the Batiste family tree. He's the co-artistic director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, and has been a collaborator with everyone from pop singer Tori Kelly to the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. He's graduate of both the New Orleans Center of the Creative Arts and the Juilliard School, and an alumni of both Wynton Marsalis' and Roy Hargrove's bands.
For the past decade, he's developed his version of "jazz 2.0," which includes what he calls "social music." Its lineage stems from Batiste's native New Orleans but also runs through his adopted hometown of New York City, thanks to elders like Lionel Hampton and Dr. Billy Taylor, who brought jazz from the concert halls to the streets. But Batiste is also a part of yet another lineage: jazz musicians in late-night television. On our radio show - with help from Batiste's Late Show predecessor Paul Shaffer, its current Executive Producer, Chris Licht, and NPR television critic Eric Deggans - we'll trace some of that history, learning how Jon Batiste developed his role. --ALEX ARIFF

I can say this, having been a 13 year ARTCM Royal Conservatory piano player and ex-band member.... Jon is beyond. As a piano player alone he is our Mozart. What I see him do is unbelievable. He never looks at music or the keys. His hands are literally independent beings with a brain in between. Talk about a savant. I was taught to memorize Chopin & Rachmaninoff. He just seems to know it. Jeepers Jon. I have no words. Thank you for showing the way and being humble.

I sometimes feel that there is too much, what should I call it, fanboyizm? these days. Sure, the dude is great, fantastic even. But every time we delve into comparisons the waters get muddy. He is a fantastic piano player but there are lots of greats out there, potentially better than him, at least at this point (he seems to have a whole lotta years to get even better in front of him). Calling him "our Mozart" is kinda silly, especially since I don't think anyone of us ever heard Moz play live. Apples and oranges. There are numerous musicians I absolutely adore, Kent Sangster is one of my all-time favourite sax players because of the memories I made listening him play live. Is he "our Coltrane"? Nah. Don't compare, just praise the man for what he is.
@ProxyResearch
@ProxyResearch 10 ай бұрын
I've also never really seen Jarrett "look at keys", come on, that's no criteria of greatness. Besides, would someone looking at keys make them less great in comparison to someone who does it? Just silly, at least in my opinion.

'Mr. Sir Jon" Batiste, you put your Soul in the world and makes me feel happier with my own Soul. I almost 78 yrs old; when I hear your genius God given talent, my body feels no age. As a little skinny girl, I spent a lot of time with my Grandmother who lived in Possum Kingdom. Yeah, we would put her record player that only played vinyl records. She played from Hank Williams to Rachmaninoff. Your music gives my Soul that same Happy Soul feeling those vinyl records that Grandmother gave me. I always ask her to play Mr. Louis Armstrong first and last. You awaken that little girl with visions in me like nobody else has ever done. "Thank you" is too little words that cannot express how I feel. God bless and stay safe. By the way, got a piano at age 12 First recital played "Rachmaninoff's in C sharp minor". Love you! ❤️

I will be 80 years old in November and Jon Batiste is like a breath of fresh air! I have worked for the past 7 years and retired for the 3rd time in March, 2022. I kinda got left behind due to lack of time, but, I remember seeing Jon directing the band on Colbert's show and he was energetic and woke me up! But last year I fell in love with his music on You Tube trying to play "catch up"! Now I am fully aware of his "repertoire" and I am aware of just how talented and skilled he is. Black music history enlarged once again! I have tried to look and listen to his music and jazz is my fave, but he excels in all his genre's! Proud of his awards this year and stretching out to symphony this year! Do it to it Jon!

Listening to jazz has been one of the most important parts of my life since I discovered it more than 65 years ago. I grew up listening to musicians like Prez, Billie, Carmen, Sarah, Basie, Duke, Kenton, Chet, Desmond, Tatum, Bill Evans, Miles, Rollins, Clifford, Trane, Zoot, Bird, Al Cohn, Monk, Barry Harris, Thad, and Mulligan. When I hear Jon quote Bird, Monk, Duke, and other jazz greats on the Colbert show, it reassures me that musicians like he, Regina Carter, and Anat Cohen will continue to cause this Great American Music to long endure and grow. Jon is also a guy who "gives back" -- there's a video online of him working in a very supportive way with one of today's younger singers; the recording makes both of them look and sound great! Jon is, in every way, "carrying on the tradition!"

Wonderful concert! Very uplifting. For what it's worth, Jon turned 33 on November 11, 2019. That means that all present were safe from COVID-19 and explains the complete absence of masks.

It's crazy how strange it looks to us now to see people gathered together maskless! How long will it take until we figure out the new normal? Just hope we have Jon Batiste to sooth us during the process!!

@@maryroberts589 Happens to me too when I see movies and concerts from before 2020. It makes me feel uneasy. Strange how things have changed. Being in a crowded bar or with a room full of friends feels like it happened a decade ago. Somehow being lonely, at least for for me, has become somehow normal. 😑

I just want to thank you for your work, John, and that of your lovely family of musicians. I have received such comfort from your music in this time of heartbreak and darkness on the political and social stage. As an artist, I am deeply impacted by music. Your creations are filled with the energy of peace and compassion, comfort and encouragement and it has impacted my art and my artistic process in amazing ways. I painted to this music today and the results are bright and beautiful. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I send love from my heart.

This really needs to be out there. Sometimes people don't get the full measure of the musicianship and repertoire of the "late night show" bands on television. I am so glad that Jon Batiste and company are putting that problem to rest here. And his work in the movie "Soul" is just great! Uplifting and inspiring...all just through the sound of his hands on the keys. Amazing.
